Different states tax their residences at different levels. In some states, like New Jersey, residents pay 12.2% as a percentage of their income. In others, like Alaska, they pay as little as 6.3%. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed a report recently released by the Tax Foundation to identify the states where residents paid the most and least in state and local taxes as a percent of income.

Alaska - lowest in the tax area, eh?

Hmmmm, trying to remember who was the “incompetent, inexperienced, and ill-educated” governor of that state.

Darn, just cannot get that name on my tongue......

Oh the other hand, I can name an incompetent, inexperienced, and very ill-educated president who is beneath contempt....

“Different states tax their residences at different levels.”

Sorry I couldn’t get back this sentence. Either Da Coyote mispasted, or someone’s editor is on a binge.

“Alaskans have the lowest tax burden of any state in the country, paying just 6.3%...

According to the Tax Foundation, “Before the Trans-Alaska pipeline was finished in 1977, taxpayers in Alaska bore the second-highest tax burden in the country. By 1980, with oil tax revenue pouring in, Alaska repealed its personal income tax and started sending out checks instead. The tax burden plummeted, and now Alaskans are the least taxed.” The state also levies no personal income tax or sales tax.”

From this list you can easily conclude that the 10 highest taxing states are, or have been, Democrats strongholds. Conversly, you can make the clear case that the 10 least taxing states are conservative by nature.

From the article:

I don't believe Gov. Palin would try to take credit for that.

If Texas taxed the oil companies operating in Texas and sent checks out to the public, they would be contesting the top spot, but windfall taxes on Oil and gas companies is a Democrat thing. Also being the 2nd most populous state, the checks would be rather small. You would also have to factor in that there is very little public land in Texas either federal or state. It's almost all private.

Highest tax states are leftist politically.

Lowest tax states are conservative politically.

Not much else is new.

People move to low tax states from high tax states like California, New Jersey and New York to escape the crushing tax burden and intrusive Nanny-State liberal governments they keep electing and re-electing.

Once they are settled into their new, low tax home state the first thing they do is say how glad they are to be away from the high tax, oppressive Nanny-State government of their old home state.

The second thing many escapees do is to start whining about the things they miss from the old Nanny-State and complaining about the “backward” culture of their new state. (no opera, no symphony, no rapid transit, no free concerts)

The third thing they do is start demanding the same taxpayer paid Nanny-State services, handouts and freebies they were accustomed to “back home”.

Then they vote for high tax liberals and start recreating the oppressive, high tax, liberal culture they left behind.

Out west they call it Californication.

Ya want to really turn green? We live rural in Ak, no property taxes either. No law enforcement, nobody hiding in the weeds collecting revenue or giving a reason to pass more laws & ordinances & regulations. No organized local govt is a very good thing, and locals want it to stay that way.

Something else, before statehood vote, Alaskans wanted to stay like Peurto Rico or Philapines. They realized Alaska didn’t have the money to run govt and they would be taxed to death. Fed brught in 15,000 military changed requirements and threw the election. No joke, that’s what really went down.

My Red State Brothers and Sisters if I move to the lovely part of your area, I will not be whiny or complain. Where I do draw the line, when these questions are posed to me: “Girl, you Vietnamese?” or “Do you speak English?”. Have a cool day everyone, it is already 1:00am in the Big Apple and Ninety-Five Hot Degrees of Humidity.

I don’t know about that. Isn’t Fort Hood one of the largest military bases in the U.S. Definitely top 10 for sure.

This survey is deceiving. As pointed out, there is a reason Alaska is a low tax state and it has more to do with natural resources than conservative government. Second, this survey lumps too much together. Take Pennsylvania. It has an obscenely high corporate tax rate but has a fairly low flat tax on residential income. The sales tax exempts food, clothing and a bunch of other necessities. I wouldn’t necessarily consider Pennsylvania a high tax state. It certainly isn’t a “soak the rich” progressive tax state.

Do You mean Wally Hinkle? I can't think of any other Alaskan Governor, I mean, they all basically fade away without making any contributions to the National Political spectrum, Nope can't think of a single one.....

As for an incomptnat president, I think James Polk has had an unfair treatment by history.Oh, Wait, there is another.

I was surprised Massachusetts didn't make the most-taxed list. The Governor and state legislature must be dumbfounded, too.

Interesting that the highest taxed states have been run by the left for decades. Probably just a coincidence!

At least Polk won a war (and against an enemy we need to teach yet another lesson to).

There are bases and some public land but the overall percentage is very low. Try hunting in Texas without a lease or your own land. You are left with few options.
