Anyone who would play the politics-as-usual card against Trump has not been paying attention. I don’t think the Democrats have a strategy. They are simply taking the opposite tact as Trump at every turn, as demanded by their hard core Left.
In my opinion, and I don’t know if Trump has the power to do this, he ought to announce the immediate furlough of all affected workers and tell them that they “may” be rehired if the Democrats approve the funding. That might be a bit extreme as I think Trump has enough cards to eventually win anyway. But, most likely, Trump will offer some sort of face-saving compromise as that’s the minimum that has always been done. The true Left won’t appreciate it, but it may give Trump some bargaining power with the actual players (like Nancy and Chuck) in the future.
He should declare a “Public Health Emergency” because the CDC already has the confirmed evidence of all the infectious communicable diseases that are pouring across our border, which include:
adenoviral conjunctivitis, botulism, bubonic plague, chicken pox, cholera, diphtheria, cryptosporidiosis, dengue fever, infectious tuberculosis, echinococcosis, enterohemorrhagic E. coli, giardiasis, novel or re-emergent influenza, hantavirus, hepatitis A, viral hemorrhagic fever, HIV/AIDS, leprosy, louse-borne relapsing fever, malaria, measles, meningococcal disease, meningoencephalitis,, mumps, paratyphoid, rubella, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), shigellosis, smallpox, syphilis, toxoplasmosis, trichinellosis, tularemia, typhus, yellow fever, and whooping cough.
Force the Democrat Socialists to prove the CDC wrong, and explain how they plan to deter, detect and defeat a deadly bioterroristic epidemic with drones!

No paychecks for that long would make many government workers leave their positions for the private sector.

I think that also. I didn't like Mattis from the get go. There is something off about him. All generals and admirals that made flag during O'Bastards reign of terror are suspect.

I believe so. Mattis was an old school never ending war guy.
President Trump hates to see waste and he wants to get things done NOW so Mattis is gone and the new guy is on board with the Presidents ideas.

Congress never approved the funds for the Manhattan Project either. Of course, war time rules are different. That is why he can declare an emergency and use the military funding..I hope that the President sticks to his guns and build the wall, otherwise, he will be toast.
I recommend that you always prepare, for any potential disaster. Don’t wait - even if this is not the SHTF, there are so many disasters that happen all of the time, and you should be a resource not only for your family, but others as well that were unprepared..We have food that will last well beyond our years, so that food will be there for someone else after we leave this earth. Also, prepare for more than just yourself. We are two, but we have provisions for 10..

He is taking CREDIT, not blame.
80% of Americans want the wall. 68% of Ds want the wall.
We all know Federal employees are difficult to impossible to fire. Keep them furloughed, as long as it takes and there is a double win: government can do less harm. Mouth breathers can go find other gigs. They can have a funcation, write poetry and take a ceramics class, as Pelousi said when our private sector jobs were killed.
I also consider it a lesson in personal economics for the ‘public servants’: you should have savings to live on. You should have survival supplies of food, water and meds, just in case. Maybe you can go visit family outside of DC and discover the vibrant private economy. Think of the savings in rent alone.
And for those who were in government jobs during the zer0 years: welcome to our world. We all survived and without the security of that large, cumulative check for back pay waiting on the other end.
Right now, there are more jobs than employees. No one has missed a check yet. All back pay will eventually be paid. So: Federal workers affected can use their time to participate in the gig economy, knowing that a fat check awaits them down the line.
POTUS can permanently downsize or eliminate many departments and positions. He can cut wages in Executive Branch positions. Put the government and the administrative state on notice: you are non-essential.
Enough people will cheer him on to make it a positive.
Credit for a tactical win instead of blame for caving, as usual.
Keep the government shutdown until the entire wall is built. That would make it go a bit faster. And note that for each week the government is shut down, the DACA program will be reduced by 5000 illegals.
