EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards fired up the crowd on the U-W Eau Claire campus this afternoon. Then he told them to hop on some waiting buses and travel to City Hall to vote absentee. Edwards continued to rip President Bush, calling his administration incompetent with its strategy in the war on Iraq. Hundreds of people jammed into the gym on campus and chanted ``Two More Weeks'' as Edwards took the stage. Edwards accused Bush of transforming Iraq into a haven for terrorists. He told the crowd Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney are the...

The Pennsylvania Department of State advised county election officials last week to wait for a court ruling, because state law does not require the counties to clear the backlog of absentee ballot petitions until Oct. 19. But some county officials said waiting too long would disenfranchise voters by not giving them enough time to return the ballots by the Oct. 29 deadline.

Absentee Voting Week Kicks Off Oct. 11 By Samantha L. QuigleyAmerican Forces Press Service WASHINGTON, Oct. 8, 2004 -- Oct. 11-15 has been designated Absentee Voting Week by the Federal Voting Assistance Program. Overseas voters should vote and return their state absentee ballots or the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot during this week, according to federal voting officials. FVAP officials note it's imperative to mark and mail ballots as soon as they are received. If a state absentee ballot has been requested but doesn't arrive by voting week, a Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot should be submitted. In the event the...

CAMP TAJI, Iraq - As the legal debate continues over Ralph Nader's inclusion on Arkansas' November ballot, leaders of the state's 39th Infantry Brigade are searching for ways that will allow the brigade's 3,200 soldiers to successfully vote. The Nader lawsuit has delayed printing of ballots in Arkansas. If ballots are not printed in time to be mailed to Iraq - where the 39th is stationed - and returned in time to each county clerk's office, the soldiers' votes will not be counted in the November election. And while the brigade's votes are unlikely to affect the presidential election, military...

DES MOINES, Iowa -- For the second time this week, errors have been found on absentee ballots in Iowa. On Tuesday, Secretary of State Chet Culver ordered absentee voting halted in four southeastern Iowa counties after he learned the name of an Associate District Court judge had been left off absentee and general election ballots. The mistake affects more than 60,000 ballots sent to county auditors in Henry, Lee, Louisa and Des Moines counties earlier this month.

I just received my overseas absentee ballot. What the Elections Department is doing this year makes me wonder whether we are headed for another fiasco like 2000. I received a 20-page ''Official General Election Ballot'' that looks like a third-generation photocopy. With it, there is a ''Notice to Overseas Electors'' that reads: ``The enclosed Special Advance General Election Absentee Ballot is intended for use by overseas voters to protect your right to vote since there may not be sufficient time for you to receive and return the Official General Election Absentee Ballot. This ballot should be completed and returned as...

What's News (World-Wide section) About half of the 15 or so states that President Bush and Sen. John Kerry are most closely contesting will allow voters to cast ballots early for any reason, leading experts to predict that from one-quarter to one-third of the national vote may already be in before polls open on Nov. 2

The U.S. Defense Department said Tuesday that it's trying to find a way to permit American expatriates to connect to an absentee voting site that has been cordoned off because of the risk of hackers. Internet users in large portions of the world have been blocked from connecting to the voting assistance Web site, which tells absentee voters how to cast ballots in the November election. The list of Internet providers that appear to be blocked includes British Telecom, Wanadoo, Telefonica and China Telecom. "We're aware of the problem, and we're working on a solution," Pentagon spokeswoman Lt. Col. Ellen...

WASHINGTON -- It looks as if some 30 percent of all voters will cast absentee or early votes this coming election, a sixfold increase from just two decades ago. The number could go even higher this year if fears about electronic touch-screen machines lead many people to conclude that the only to create a paper record of their vote is to cast an absentee ballot. State and local election boards are making it easier than ever to skip out on Election Day voting. In 16 of the 20 battleground states this November a voter will no longer need to provide...

MAKE SURE OUR TROOPS GET TO VOTE. With word of voter fraud being an issue in this election, we need to take an active stand. I just heard a worried father call the Sean Hannity radio show. He said his son is an overseas Marine and that the Marine has yet to recieve his absentee ballot. The father is worried, and he should be, that there is yet another effort to stop our military from voting. I THINK THAT COUNTIES MAIL OUT THOSE BALLOTS. Which means we should all be contacting County Elections offices in our own areas around the...

"Hello, this is George W. Bush." Darl McMahon isn't a personal friend of the president, so she was understandably startled to hear that greeting a few weeks ago as she answered the phone in her Mt. Lebanon home. It wasn't the president, but it was his recorded voice.

Boone County residents serving in the military overseas will have the option of voting in the Nov. 2 election by electronically scanning their absentee ballots and having them e-mailed to Pentagon contractors. Boone County Clerk Wendy Noren said she will accept the ballots that will be faxed by the Department of Defense to local election officials. The system is nothing new. In 1990, Noren accepted faxed ballots from troops overseas. But this year, it turned out that many troops in Iraq had difficulties finding fax machines. "I can’t imagine they will have fax machines with long-distance service there," said Tracy...

Critics Say Palm Beach County Absentee Ballot Even More Confusing Than One Used in 2000 Election The Associated Press WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. Aug. 22, 2004 — Palm Beach County has introduced an absentee ballot that requires voters to indicate their choices by connecting broken arrows, sparking criticism that it is even more confusing than the infamous "butterfly ballot" used in the 2000 election. Theresa LePore, the elections supervisor who approved the 2000 butterfly ballot, opted for a ballot design for the Aug. 31 primary that asks voters to draw lines joining two ends of an arrow. Critics say the...

(08-20) 10:57 PDT MEXICO CITY (AP) -- President Bush's young, Hispanic nephew and his bride are on the campaign trail -- in Mexico, where they are joining the increasingly vigorous battle for the votes of 1 million U.S. citizens living south of the border. George Prescott Bush -- whose father is Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and mother, Columba, is originally from Mexico -- was arriving late Friday for a four-day tour in support of his uncle's re-election campaign. The trip was paid for by the political nonprofit Republicans Abroad. The campaign for Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry also is courting...
