The Bigger Lesson Lost on the Anti-Bristol Crowd
Clearly Nebulous ^ | November 22, 2010 | Colette Moran

The kerfuffle is all about stuffing the ballot box. People on websites have bragged about inventing fake email addresses and voting up to 300 times. They say they want to teach a lesson about voter fraud. Those who don't like Bristol have cried foul, claiming that the integrity of the show is threatened.

Seriously? Ok, whatever -- here's my take:

I believe that ABC's voting fraud control is probably far better than that of any typical urban area in the U.S. (which more often than not are controlled by the likes of whom would not vote for anyone named Palin). Bristol has not made it to the finals because of voter fraud, but because her fans (who more likely than not also happen to be Sarah Palin fans) have made it a point to vote her in. They have spread the word about how to vote and have actually voted (unlike the many complaining reporters etc who, when questioned by the producer of DWTS, admitted they did not vote).

The bigger hypocrisy that Bristol's haters won't admit is ...

No, it makes the case for voting for whomever you prefer to win — but voting only ONCE.

Isn’t that what voting should be all about?

I can’t believe there are that many people who will establish dozens of email addresses so they can vote multiple times over as unimportant a thing as a tv game show.

It would take an enormous amount of time. It simply wouldn’t be worth it.

Maybe there a few such nuts out there, but I’m betting there aren’t that many at all.

The host of the show, Tom Bergeron, said after Brandy lost her chance to win, "This is why you need to vote." As if he were begging for more "real" people to vote. Or something like that.

I never vote. I just like the dancing. But, I am concerned about the backlash against Bristol.

Liberals care about voter fraud when it “might” be happening with a TV show. In real life situations they send out black panther goons... and pretend it’s nothing.

Don't think it will bother Bristol much. She is a strong fantastic young girl and it will bounce off her back. Think she will just do her thing tonight. Can't believe the liberals would be upset when these rotten nitwits destroy our elective process and here we are. The exalted communists black Muslim King Obama of America.

“No, it makes the case for voting for whomever you prefer to win — but voting only ONCE.”

Nope!

America’s Got Talent would let you vote up to 10 times for each contestant.

I would imagine it’s the same for DWTS.

Again...bonified Ballroom dancing contests are not left up to the whims of the general public.

The mere establishment of SEPARATE phone lines for each contestant, with a simultaneous multiple voting capability over other carriers like internet and texting, there is no way that DWTS could be classified as anything other than a "popularity" contest.

The judges are there for show, hoping to influence call-ins in their direction of preference, but in the end, it's the call-ins that decide it. Given that millions of voters are NOT professional ballroom dancing judges, all that's left is popularity.

Secondly, if it was just a "dancing contest", then all of the contestants would be professional ballroom dancers...but they are not. Professional dancers team up with a star/celbrity; the star/celebrity aspect is why people watch - normally pure ballroom dancing doesn't commandere much of an audience on national TV.

It's all about voting for a star...a personality; watching them dance is the entertainment, and the backstage footage is the drama.

I don't know what will happen tonight, but there is probably some sort of "fix" in so that Bristol will not get the final championship. If she does, I'm sure that Jennifer Gray, the Judges, and a few million liberals' heads will expode in unison, and the liberal press will have something else to piss and moan about.

I’m sure that Bristol is better than McCain’s spawn but I have no more interest in Sarah’s children than McCain’s. I really hope that Bristol does not try to make a career of her celebrity status, if she avoids that trap, a backlash will mean nothing to her.

Don’t you think that she can do some good as an advocate? Her time as a teen mom is ticking, but she can still be an advocate for abstinence. And for showing, if you do get pregnant, having a baby is not the end of the world.

I'm not impressed by celebrity advocates, especially when their credentials are that they did whatever they are now advocating against. Teens understand hypocrisy. They are also experts at taking home the wrong message.

The question I posed to my wife yesterday as we were discussing this issue was this:

“If it were Chelsea Clinton who was getting this apparently unnecessary push instead of Bristol Palin, would the media be so up in arms?”

As non-political as my wife is, even she had to admit that the hoo-hah is almost entirely driven by the who and not the what of the situation.

Good for her!

I would vote for Jennifer if I voted. But I really don’t care one way or the other...except I’d love to see libtard heads explode if BP wins.

I’m not sure if voting once is the model here.

Other such fan polls that allow multiple votes include All-Star ballots for major professional sports. There they actually encourage fans to vote up to 10 or 20 times or whatever is the limit. I imagine their reasoning is that fans become more committed to their favorite players and the league by participating on a repeat basis. Perhaps as well they realize that the most passionate fans will thus have their preferences weighted most heavily.

By allowing up to five votes per email address and/or phone number, DWTS seems to similarly be encouraging fans to vote repeatedly—up to a point.

You caught me in the act of showing my ignorance. I don’t watch the shows so I didn’t realize multiple votes are allowed. I should have said, “vote for whomever you prefer, but follow the rules, whatever they are”.

But then again, kids really like to have role models to emulate — if they hear from Bristol how hard it is to parent, even with the support of your family — they may think twice about ever having sex. (And seeing what a scumbag Levi has been has given great “testimony” as well!)

...from Bristol how hard it is to parent...
My apologies, but Bristol is a poor example against teen pregnancy. Sure she talks about how hard it is, but in reality she is on DWTS as a celebrity(partly) because of that fact. Hardly an example for "how much her life sucks". While its awesome that her success is pissing the liberals off, I hope she settles down a bit after this instead of becoming a huge celebrity.

I think Bristol will find it easy to return home, be with her family and raise her beautiful son — for she was raised right and she knows life’s real priorities!
