Poetry and Potpourri ....November 17-18, 2003

.................................................................

The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.

FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.

I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

Found
By Clive B Ringshall

I’ve traveled so long,
With the vision of an angel,
With the feeling of her softness,
She'd smell of the perfect rose,
I’ve looked, I’ve settled for less,
I lived knowing in my heart,
You were out there just waiting,
I traveled further than before,
Knowing that out there my heart belonged,
Then one day without looking,
Without feeling, without interest,
I found you, You awoke the dieing embers of my life,
An angel so soft so gentle so giving,
I now know that I have found my love,
my soul, my friend, my lover,
My life long dream, is now reality,
Who could have thought that I’d find an
Angel?
Is this real?
Please let it be.

I have to live with myself, and so
I want to be fit for myself to know.
I want to be able, as days go by,
Always to look myself straight in the eye;
I don't want to stand, with the setting sun,
And hate myself for the things I've done.
I want to go out with my head erect,
I want to desserve all men's respect:
For here in the struggle for fame and self
I want to be able to like myself.
I dont want to look at myself and know
That I'm bluster and bluff and empty show.
I never can hide myself from me;
I see what others may never see.
I know what others may never know.
I neer can fool myself, and so,
Whatever happens I want to be
Self-respecting and conscience fee.

Tao of the Renga *

crystals form like fallen ferns
fond memories flirting in time

gone the green essence of life
fine fronds weaving with the wind

feathery wisps of lace blend
with blue skies and autumn hues

light peers through, distant, haunting
an eery pause to reflect

our spirit seeks elusive truths
silence merely mocks with smiles

we yearn to hear the message
only sorrows pierce the calm

* Renga or "linked verse" is Japanese poetry
whereby people take turns adding lines or verses.
One types 7 (or 5) syllables -- not words -- in a line,
which is in turn completed by another person.
Poems can branch off in multiple lines to
form a "kika" or "branched verse".

The selection above, however, was composed
more or less properly(?) by this lone sole who
was inspired by patterns on a car windshield
photographed Nov. 6 in Walla Walla, Washington.
Interested parties are invited, nay encouraged, to
revise and extend my remarks, or lines to that effect.

I brought this over from yesterday's thread. Would anyone like to add to this poem by OESY?

Brought on by loads of yard work, I had been in a deep sleep for the last four hours or so. It must have been an angel that woke me just in time to find "Found."

I can't wait to read it to my love tomorrow (today). Thank you.

A man is not old when his hair turns gray,
A man is not old when his teeth decay,
But he's well on his way to the last long sleep
When his mind makes a date that his body can't keep.

Happy 46th Anniversary !

. . . That which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. —Ecclesiastes 1:9

I wonder what I did for God today:
How many times did I once pause and pray?
But I must find and serve Him in these ways,
For life is made of ordinary days. Macbeth

If life is a grind, use it to sharpen your character.
