Home vegetable gardens appear to be booming as a result of the twin movements to eat local and pinch pennies.
At the Southeastern Flower Show in Atlanta this winter, D. Landreth Seed Co. of New Freedom, Pa., sold three to four times more seed packets than last year, says Barb Melera, president. "This is the first time I've ever heard people say, 'I can grow this more cheaply than I can buy it in the supermarket.' That's a 180-degree turn from the norm."
Roger Doiron, a gardener and fresh-food advocate from Scarborough, Maine, said he turned $85 worth of seeds into more than six months of vegetables for his family of five.
A year later, he says, the family still had "several quarts of tomato sauce, bags of mixed vegetables and ice-cube trays of pesto in the freezer; 20 heads of garlic, a five-gallon crock of sauerkraut, more homegrown hot-pepper sauce than one family could comfortably eat in a year and three sorts of squash, which we make into soups, stews and bread."

She compares the current period of market uncertainty with that of the early- to mid-20th century when the concept of victory gardens became popular.
"A lot of companies during the world wars and the Great Depression era encouraged vegetable gardening as a way of addressing layoffs, reduced wages and such," she says. "Some companies, like U.S. Steel, made gardens available at the workplace. Railroads provided easements they'd rent to employees and others for gardening."

When Dink, my little parrot was alive, he died of old age, but in his youth, there was no cat or dog that would scare Dink.
He would attack and bite their ears and noses.
We learned to let him bite the ear and that was a lesson that made it easier to live with them, as when they saw Dink was free, they kept their distance.
Dink was a Petz Conure, he lived with us 24 years, and was an illegal immigrant.........LOL, the Border Patrol took him off a man who had brought him across the desert in a paper sack.........and gave him to a Sheriff’s wife to save, as he did not even have feathers, he was so young.
I once wrote down 130 words that Dink said clearly, and that was 10 years before he died.
Dink kept me bleeding all the time, I had all the food and did not always give him what he thought he was going to get.
If it was a can, Dink wanted it to have beer in it.
One weekend, my brother Ray was visiting, and Ray is always teasing someone, so when Dink began to get very loud and excited, I told Ray to stop teasing him.
Bill, then told me what had happened, Ray had shared his beer with Dink and when he decided that Dink had enough, he attempted to keep Dink out of it, but it was too late, for Dink was hooked on beer.....something that Bill and I rarely drank, so he kept attacking, hoping he would get lucky this time.

It is a lovely plant, when the pods are young, it is eaten and called Chinese Okra.
Yes, mature pods last for years, I have one or two around here that are 20 or 30 years old.....they make a good dish scrubber, etc, if you grow them and have plenty.
By now you must know, I like almost all plants and if they have healing or food value, LOL, then I love them.
Of course, beauty gets loved too.
When I grew orchids, I always wanted to take an assortment of the flowers to a blind school, so they could ‘know’ them.
Now I almost never hear the word ‘orchid’.

You can in a sunny window, if they need more humidity, set them on a tray of gravel or marbles, that is what I did with my first orchids. Which went from 3 or 4 plants from Sears to 3 greenhouses.
If I could still garden and move around, I would make the
statement “I would rather have a greenhouse, than a house.”
If your husband is a handy man, build your own, with the new plastics, it is easy and affordable.........I would not buy a kit.
When I started, we used glass panes.
I love them attached to the mobile, and if you can put them on the south, you can make a fantastic solar greenhouse of them, that will pay for itself in year round food and heat in the winter.
The first year in this mobile, I could not cool it off.
The second year, the first greenhouse was up, it only covered about 10 or 12 foot of the mobile, but there was a door that opened into the greenhouse, and with it open, the exact same cooler, cooled the entire mobile nicely.
It is amazing the amount of food one can grow in one.

I forgot to click on a Yahoo alert that showed up as an ad /alert on the top of the page, it said that the citrus crops in California has a disease and please do not move them, so now is not the time to buy citrus plants.
There was also a Meyers type lime tree that I grew in pots.
I once listed a house in Kingman for a family and he had a fair sized greenhouse, maybe 40 x 20’, half underground, that he grew nothing but citrus trees in.
But the ad that I saw this morning, pleased me.
It said “Give a baby goat for Christmas”, and had a cute picture of a baby goat.
There will be a big surge in survival seekers, as on the Coast to Coast Am program last night, his guest was saying to take your money out of the stocks and banks and buy storage food and other needed items....
I did not hear the entire program, only a few minutes.
It rained here in Fresno since last night. LOL the dog did NOT want to go out, she is so spoiled by the dry weather. My husband will probably stop by the house at mid morning to take her out. Thank God for the rain, the ski resorts are opening up soon (I wonder if they will drop their prices to get business, I imagine it will be a tough year with the economy, lots of snow but no people). Hmmmm.

LOL, yes, there are more stories about Dink than I can post today.
One of these days I will tell you about our years with him, he was an amazing bird.
The cops wife gave him to me, as he was pulling all his feathers out, at about 3 years of age, it took her a year to say
“come and get him”, but she thought that I might help him and if he was with other birds, he would stop pulling feathers.
He was never cured, I suspect it was having been raised on people food and not by Mama bird.
I went the 25 miles to get him, complete with a six foot cage, LOL, I thought he was going to be a big bird, but he was the size of a Cockatiel or a little smaller.
We put him in a travel cage and away I went, and he set there and bitched all the way home, sounded like a drunk,
“OK, OK,OK” over and over.
I was late getting home, poor Bill had not even been able to get to the house, he still had the mail in hand, as we had goats kidding and he was busy with them.
We set up the cage and put Dink in it and found something for dinner and fell into bed, well past bedtime.
I woke up the next morning to hear Bill saying over and over
“I’m putting my pants on,dammit, I told you I am putting my pants on”........
Please note, I did not get up with Bill in the morning, that was his silent time and he did not speak, his sister was the same way.
He had gone out to start his coffee and when Dink saw him, a stranger to Dink, Dink started asking questions and got stuck on “WHAT are you doing???”, over and over.
I thought it was funny, Bill didn’t.
Then I got up, Dink took one look at me and started yelling,
“I want a bath!!!”.
So I gave him a bowl of water, and that made him yell even louder.
When I told the Man I got him from, he said “Sorry we forgot to give you the cake pan that you put in the sink and turn the water on real slow, a trickle and Dink takes a bath. “
In later years, he just sat on my shoulder, while I showered.
Another good post for writers
1 cup milk
1 egg
3 Tbsp melted margarine
2-3 cloves crushed garlic
2 Tbsp chopped chives
1 Tbsp sugar
4 tsp baking powder
2 cups flour
Reheat oven to 375oF, prepare pans. Put the first six ingredients into a bowl
& mix well. Add the remaining ingredients & blend until just mixed. Spoon
into pans and bake for 15-20 mins. Makes 12 muffins.
Note: Use these muffins in place of garlic bread. Lovely with soups etc.
