Ancient 'lost city' home to a vanished civilisation found deep in jungles of Honduras

The jungle-choked remains of a "lost city", abandoned by a mysterious civilisation several centuries ago and long fabled for reports of its gold and "monkey children", have been uncovered in the depths of the rainforests of Honduras.

A team of American and Honduran archaeologists, aided by the bushcraft and survival skills of former British SAS soldiers, has just emerged from one of the most remote locations on Earth with news of their stunning discovery.

The expedition was seeking the site of the legendary "White City", also known as the "City of the Monkey God", a goal for Western explorers since the days of the Spanish conquistadores in the 16th century.

The city, believed to be one of many lost in the Mosquitia jungle, was home to an unknown people that thrived a thousand years ago but then vanished without trace – until now.

Unlike the Maya, so little is known of this pre-Columbian culture that it does not even have a name.

Tales of the Gold Monkey with some glaring historical errors but a fun series though. Loved the Grumman Goose.

“forest clearing is going on to create pasturing for cattle”

Every time I see something like that, it makes me wonder at the level of ignorance of people who just keep doing this slash and burn clearing-how is it they have not figured out how to keep the huge pasturage they already have planted with native grass, the way every rancher here does-plant hay in late winter/early spring and harvest it in summer/fall-and they even have a climate that can support year round planting. It is not like someone just gave them cows yesterday-they have been raising them since the Spaniards brought them over...

“I didn’t know that the Mosquito Coast actually extends a little bit into Honduras”

The Miskitia (Mosquito Coast)is to a large extent in Honduras. It is a huge area of flat sparsely inhabited swampland controlled mostly by snakes, various animals and drug traffickers. The name “Mosquito Coast” is a corruption of the name of a local tribe of indigenous people called Miskitos. It actually has nothing to do with flying bugs, though it has its share.

According to local Honduran news media here in Tegucigalpa, there are definite plans to excavate the Ciudad Blanca, but these efforts are hampered by lack of money, literally thousands of other archaeological sites lie waiting for the same reason. At present the site is being guarded against pilferage and looting by the Honduran army and the Policia Militar.
