Sonoma County, California school district has instituted a new grading scale that substantially lowers the bar to allow underachieving students, traditionally known as failures, to climb into more average grade territory.
Its called the equal interval scale, and according to The Press Democrat, it makes it harder to get a failing grade by moving the F scale to below 20% as opposed to the standard 59% and below. The equal interval scale is modeled to raise grades in 20-point increments, which would mean scores between 20% and 40% will now earn students a D- or D+. Making a score of 80 or above now makes them straight-A students.
A middle school math and science teacher told the Democrat that his worst math students are now receiving Cs and a science student with only a 23% grade has earned a D-.
Speaking before the school board, this teacher complained, This isnt giving students hope, it is lowering standards in order to raise grades. Wow.
So, whats happening is that kids will receive high school diplomas nowadays without having to do any work and for failing miserably?
Were literally encouraging students to be failures?
A for effort, California!
What good does this do for future American leaders?
I guess Sonoma County is setting up these kids to be fast-food workers for life.
Doesnt anyone have to take responsibility for their actions anymore?
Where have all the adults gone?
By implementing this fundamentally ridiculous idea, whats the point of even having teachers in classrooms?
I wonder if the thinking at the time went something like this
California has a large number of minorities living in the state, and many students arent passing their classes. Lets just make things easier for everyone. I mean, we dont want to look like racists!
Like liberal policies, the Sonoma County school district will do whatever it can to keep people down.
Lady Liberty weeps.
Oops ! It was Miss Teen USA from S.C.
Sorry Alabama.
.
My kids go to a high end private school, and by 3rd grade:
-perfect cursive
-multiplication and division mastered
-basic understanding of Latin
-basic understanding of algebra
-basic knowledge of history
-mastery of reading and reading comprehension
-ability to write book reports on what they have read
-working competence in art and awareness of the masters and their associated works and techniques.
-basic fluency in Spanish
-can do 20 push up’s and vigorous cardo
-perfect body weight
yeah, but these kids can type out illegible textspeak at 250 words per minute.
And I use the word “words” very loosely.
My mama always told me to remember that half of all doctors graduated in the bottom half of their class, and proceed with caution on any advice given by ‘experts.’
Has California passed Mississippi yet? No offense ,Miss.. .
“You can imagine what will happen to the school district when all the smarter students leave the school district.”
Indeed, even a High School diploma from Sonoma County won’t get you a job in Starbucks anymore.
Sounds like a great school.
I attended public school in the 40s-—back when public schools taught academics and didn’t fool around with “social justice” issues.
I did well-—but NEVER could have done 20 pushups. Never.:-)
.
Yeah, but can the kids build a ramp out of bricks and plywood and jump over two of their buddies on a bicycle with a 10-22 harnessed to his back and a string of fish dangling from the handlebars while other buddies throw mudballs at him?
I think not.
Good luck bagging a squirrel with that clarinet, nerds!
This is incredibly sad. Growing up in California, we had the best schools in the nation.
excellent
“”””but NEVER could have done 20 pushups”””””
pfffft. I did 60 while I was typing this and eating a nanner sandwich at the same time.
Stupidly worded headline. Should say 20% or less is an F, 21% or greater is an A
I'd be planning my move now, whether or not I had kids. This grading system is going to make property in this school district undesirable to high-achieving parents with kids. Those parents (who are mostly prosperous) are going to move out. Property values drop. The quality of a school system has a big effect on property prices.
That’ll happen when the majority of the state has an IQ below 90.
Obama Math!
Woo Hoooo!
At least it's consistent.
Same technique as national statistics since Obumgo took office.
It's worked for crime Statistics, Unemplyment, National Debt, Black crime, etc., etc., Etc...
My dad has been a teacher for 40+ years, and he still grades on a curve. Most students like ‘curved’ grades...but they really mean ‘scaled’ grades.
Rather the curve ensures a couple of students get an A, a few get an F, some more B’s and D’s, and the majority get a C. C used to mean ‘Average’...as in the average grade in the class is a C.
Grades are racis.
Okay,I give up.
What on earth is a nanner sandwich?
.
Hey, as long as your surgeon knows 20% of what he should know and passes, you should have no worries.
