Glenn Beck and the Fox Puppets Want to Repeal the 20th Century
Newsweek ^ | February 22, 2010 | Jonathan Alter

Glenn Beck has now supplanted Rush Limbaugh as the most influential broadcaster in America. He's the one the tea-party movement looks to. Beck wowed the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) crowd Feb 20 with his attack on progressivism, which he said must be "eradicated." "Progressivism is the cancer in America and it's eating our Constitution," Beck told the crowd.

Now that Beck has given his marching orders, expect to hear all the Fox Puppets echoing him. The goal is to discredit "progressivism" as they did "liberalism."

Beck fancies himself a historian; his patter is full of historical references that seem to have convinced his audience that he knows what he's talking about. Historians like Beck know that when they offer provocative ideas, they bear responsibility for what those ideas actually mean.

So let's look at what would happen if the "cancer" had been cut out when it first appeared, as Beck recommends. A world without the Progressive Era would be a world with:

•State legislatures electing U.S. senators: The 17th Amendment, part of the progressive movement, allowed for the direct election of senators. If you think the Senate is bad now, imagine what it was like when state legislators were the only voters. (They defeated Abraham Lincoln in Illinois in 1858 even though he won the popular vote for enate). Beck likes hacks.

THis would be an excellent idea. The republic was much stronger when the states had this power....

I’ve always looked at it as one of those things that could go both ways. The 17th did change somewhat the purpose, being representatives of the States versus individuals, however, it came at a time when more individuals started becoming more informed and more directly influenced by their respective States so it gave more power back to individuals.

It is how it has been used since that is the real problem. It has become a de facto House of Lords.

“Progressivism is what they call it when they're afraid to call it what it REALLY is: liberalism.”

It really isn't liberalism it is Stalinism. The Progressive movement of the early 1900’s(Theodore Roosevelt etc) was about honest, responsive government and reforming the corrupt Democrat machines(Tammany Hall etc). The Progressive movement of the 1930’s on was financed and supported by the former Soviet Union.

If I recall correctly, it was also a Republican house of Representatives that first passed woman’s suffrage laws that led to the 19th Amendment. It was a Democrat controlled Senate that first killed it. Even in the second attempt, when it did pass, it was still primarly Republicans who voted for it (House: for- 36R 20D, against 8R, 17D).

It was also a Democrat who tried to overturn the 19th in the courts saying it was improperly ratified (Leser v Garnett).

Wow. That piece would be dripping with red ink even if it were to be turned in by an 8th grader. I’m toying with the idea of tacking on a couple of weekends of detention.

Beck is interesting at times, incomprehensible at others. He is certainly no Rush Limbaugh.

The 17th Amendment is one of the most destructive ammendments in our constitution.

HA! Beck still can't hold Rush's jock strap after a round at Pebble Beach!

Liberalism discredited ITSELF, Mr Alter! Even with 24/7 cheer leading and covering up by the MSM, liberalism was exposed as the dangerous fraud it had always been. Why do you think you people had to change your name to “progressive?”

Other than spelling Limbaugh’s name right, I’m not sure there is a factually accurate statement in the entire hit piece.
