Lee Oswald in custody for killing JFK
The Kennedy
Assassination

By John McAdams
© 1995-2012

"He didn't even have the satisfaction of being killed for civil rights . . . . It's — it had to be some silly little Communist." — Jackie Kennedy, on hearing that a leftist had been arrested for her husband's murder.

It's the most controversial case in modern American history. Did Lee Harvey Oswald kill John Kennedy by himself, or did a conspiracy do it? And if a conspiracy did it, did the conspiracy include Oswald?

If you are like most Americans, you believe that a conspiracy killed Kennedy. And if you are like most Americans, you have heard a vast number of bogus factoids about the case.

This web site is dedicated to debunking the mass of misinformation and disinformation surrounding the murder of JFK. If you are believer in Oswald as a lone gunman, you are likely to enjoy this web site, since most of that misinformation and disinformation has come from conspiracists. But if you are a sophisticated conspiracist, you likely understand that the mass of silly nonsense in conspiracy books and documentaries does no service to the cause of truth in the assassination, and simply buries the "case for conspiracy" under layers of bunk.

Regardless of what you believe, several web sites, mostly conspiracy-oriented are worth checking out. And you may also want to check out my list of recommended books on the assassination.

What sort of evidence is there?

Dealey Plaza

What about those witnesses? Didn't everyone hear shots from the Grassy Knoll? What about the Tague wounding? Who was the "Umbrella Man?" Was the rifle recovered really a Mauser? Does "acoustic evidence" show a shot from the Grassy Knoll? Were the Three Tramps suspicious? How could Kennedy's head go "back and to the left?"

The Single Bullet Theory

You've seen Kevin Costner give the conspiracy version of the Single Bullet theory. You know: Connally seated directly in front of Kennedy, at the same height, and facing straight ahead. Was that really what happened?

Lee Harvey Oswald

What sort of person was he? Did he really have "Top Secret" security clearance? Did he shoot at General Walker? Were there two Oswalds? If Oswald shot Kennedy, what was his motive? Was the man exhumed in 1981 really somebody besides Oswald?

Jim Garrison and New Orleans

Did Oswald really share an office with Guy Banister? Did Clay Shaw really use the alias "Clay Bertrand?" Why did Oliver Stone make a movie about the Shaw trial and not even mention Perry Raymond Russo? Did David Ferrie die a "mysterious death?" What about Jim Garrison and the Mafia?

Medical Evidence

Did the bullet that hit Kennedy in the back penetrate only an inch and fall out? Was Kennedy hit in the head by a bullet from in front? Are the autopsy photos and x-rays faked? Did all the doctors at Parkland Hospital believe that Kennedy was hit in the front of the neck, and if so, are their opinions decisive evidence that that is what happened? Was the back of Kennedy's head blown out? Are the autopsy photos faked?

Bogus Evidence

Did you know that all the evidence in this case proven to be forged has been on the conspiracy side? One key piece originated with the KGB! Did you know that the "mysterious deaths" are virtually all not so "mysterious" when you look at them closely? Do you trust authors like Mark Lane to tell you the truth about what witnesses said?

Jack Ruby

The "lone nut" theory of the assassination is really the "two lone nuts" theory. What sort of person was Jack Ruby? A mobster? An intelligence agent? A small-time hustler? The sort of volatile character who might really have shot Oswald out of righteous anger?

Oliver Stone's Movie "JFK"

We expect Hollywood movies to take some liberties with the historical record. But what do we think when Hollywood turns history on its head? Oliver Stone wants to overturn the verdict in the Clay Shaw trial. The jury found that District Attorney Jim Garrison had no case — so Stone invents a case on celluloid. Just how honest was Oliver Stone, Shaw's Hollywood prosecutor?

John Kennedy: Liberal Martyr?

For some in the conspiracy crowd, John Kennedy was a liberal saint, who was going to implement policies that would bring America into a new Utopia. So, of course, a threatened Power Elite had to kill him. Was Kennedy the kind of left liberal who threatened established interests? Was he a hero of Civil Rights? Had he decided to pull out of Vietnam? Historian Eric Paddon dissects these claims in a series of essays based on his posts on the Internet.

Assassination Logic

Some notions about logic, probability and statistics necessarily underlie all discussion of "conspiracy" or "lone assassin." Does the lone assassination theory involve too many implausible "coincidences?" Are there a suspicious number of "connections" between various figures in the case? Is the Single Bullet Theory highly "improbable?"

Assassination Witnesses

In writings about the assassination, as in real-world criminal justice, witness testimony looms large. But just how reliable are the witnesses? How many witnesses are just flat out telling tall tales? How often are apparently sober and reliable witnesses just flat wrong?

Did Oswald Have a Girlfriend in New Orleans?

A woman named Judyth Baker has come forward claiming to have been Oswald's adulterous lover in in summer of 1963, to have participated with him in a secret bioweapons program aimed at killing Castro, and to have inside knowledge of Oswald's "patsy" role in the assassination. It's a good story, and she got a chance to tell it on the History Channel in November 2003. But is it the truth?

The Assassination Context

What we think about the assassination is dependent on what we think about history, and about the behavior of government officials and bureaucrats. Was Kennedy a radical who threatened the status quo? Did top administration officials order a coverup of a conspiracy soon after the assassination? If the FBI and the CIA withhold documents, does this mean that they are protecting assassination conspirators?

Release the Documents!

This has long been the cry of the conspiracy theorists. Supposedly, the documents show that a conspiracy killed Kennedy. In fact, the government in the 1990s released a massive number of documents. The Assassination Records Review Board had a mandate to identify and oversee the release of documents in government hands, and in private hands.

Hear History Happen

Recording devices monitored the two radio channels used by the Dallas Police Department, and these recordings are a vivid "real time" account of the frenzy of activity that followed the shooting. Here are selected audio clips beginning a couple of minutes before the assassination and ending with the arrest of Oswald in the Texas Theatre.

Do you want to ask for more information, or discuss or debate some of the issues raised here? The moderated newsgroup:

alt.assassination.jfk

run by Peter Fokes and John McAdams, is the place to go — whether you are a "newbie" with questions to ask, or a researcher with some evidence you want to present to the research community.

I was in Latin class in high school. The priest who taught it was a WW2 chaplain, tough old guy, couldn’t make it through the one hour class period without a cigarette. So the last 10 minutes of class was always individual study.

He came running into the class and shouted “Hey guys, I just heard President Kennedy got shot by a sniper.”

Forty-nine years ago today, a mediocre, vain, womanizing president got his haid blowed off because he wants the bullet-proof bubble on the presidential limousine taken off so people lining the streets could see the wind blowing through his hair.

It is unfortunate that he became a “saint” within the Democrat Party even though today’s Democrats would drum him out of the party for not being “progressive” enough.

Obviously way, way, way too much import given about a President (whose election was engineered by his booze-running father) who was a letching womanizer, along with his brother, both from a family that serially abused its women.

Had he not been dispatched, he’d have gone down in ignominy instead of becoming the idealized King of a post-death Camelot.

JFK killed America and saved the Democrats and liberalism.

From unionizing government, to Vietnam, to the 1965 Immigration Act, JFK was the end of us.

“However, if there is one man who can take the most credit for the 1965 act, it is John F. Kennedy. Kennedy seems to have inherited the resentment his father Joseph felt as an outsider in Boston’s WASP aristocracy. He voted against the McCarran-Walter Act of 1952, and supported various refugee acts throughout the 1950s. In 1958 he wrote a book, A Nation of Immigrants, which attacked the quota system as illogical and without purpose, and the book served as Kennedy’s blueprint for immigration reform after he became president in 1960. In the summer of 1963, Kennedy sent Congress a proposal calling for the elimination of the national origins quota system. He wanted immigrants admitted on the basis of family reunification and needed skills, without regard to national origin. After his assassination in November, his brother Robert took up the cause of immigration reform, calling it JFK’s legacy. In the forward to a revised edition of A Nation of Immigrants, issued in 1964 to gain support for the new law, he wrote, “I know of no cause which President Kennedy championed more warmly than the improvement of our immigration policies.” Sold as a memorial to JFK, there was very little opposition to what became known as the Immigration Act of 1965.”

Methinks acoustics of the surrounding structures created the audio illusion of a second shot from the grassy knoll.

Single shooter. Curious, and obvious cause, echo made it sound like a near (but not) simultaneous shot a moment later, with different apparent sound signature, from a particular location which nobody was in fact at (at least, not with a gun).

It was about lunch time, I was in the Army as an EM. We first heard the news on the radio, when we did, it seemed most of us worried more about not getting the weekend off as leaves would probably be cancelled. The Cuban Crisis was still fresh and the SAC bombers at Homestead AFB were still loaded and ready to go. Funny how politics at the age of early 20’s just didn’t come into play like it does today. My question at the time was; “How the hell did he manage to do it with a Carcano Carbine?” I had one too, it cost $15-$20 at the time at a retail store.

JFK has been given almost saint-like status in this country and at best he was a mediocre president with way too much personal baggage. I always laugh when I see him near the top in rankings of US presidents. Nothing beats a great media support crew to cover up your many faults and raising you to a level of greatness that is not deserving.

It seems like a lifetime away now but I still remember it well.

It was lunch period and another student, Tim Sutton came up to me and said “the president’s been shot”. This was in a very conservative part of the country, the Florida Panhandle, and within seconds everyone knew.

The first reaction was mostly, relief and happiness, as if Castro had been shot. I noticed a girl who I knew as probably the only Catholic girl in school began to quietly cry.

After maybe 15 minutes, it began to sink in and the mood changed. I recall more than one saying “I am glad he was shot but hope he doesn’t die”.

Later the principal came over the intercom and told us he had died. Everyone by then was in a somber mood and it was clear by then that no one really wanted him to have died.

I think you’re right about politics then and politics now combined with the fact that our lives were so different when we were in our 20’s and young people in their 20’s now. My now ex-husband and I were having Thanksgiving dinner with my parents and our two children, ages 1 month and 18 months. My parents only had a 12 inch black and white TV and while I remember feeling sad and wondering how such a thing could have happened, it was really just a blip on the screen of our lives at that time.

A recently deceased friend was a young Navy SEAL in the early 60’s and was attached to the CIA during part of his service.

He told me that there were a group of retired servicemen in Florida that were part of the aborted Bay of Pigs invasion and that they got together every year to drink and play poker. This group was planning to airdrop into Cuba at various placed and disable the telecommunications and power grid. Obviously, they never got on the planes as Kennedy choked.

My friend said that the CIA killed Kennedy to let future Presidents know not to mess with the intelligence community.

He said that one member of his group wrote the real story and posted it on the internet.

Here it is:

I think Killing Kennedy makes this point:
—bad back, Crohn’s disease etc...he wore a back brace

—without the back brace, his body would have been thrust forward and the second shot might have missed him. With it,
he gets the shot and it’s all over.

IIRC though technically I may mean 2nd and 3rd shots
1st: missed
2nd: went through this throat
3rd: exploded right half of his head

...I am reminded of these lines from
Give the People What they Want by the Kinks

When Oswald shot Kennedy, he was insane
But still we watched the reruns again and again
We all sit rapt while the killer takes aim...
“Hey ma there goes a piece of the President’s brain!”

If there was a conspiracy to assassinate JFK, I have an odd chain of circumstances that might explain *why*, if not who or how.

Today, JFK is regarded as the poster boy for Addison’s disease, among his many other medical problems.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addison%27s_disease

While at the time this sickness was not widely known, Addison’s disease can cause, and in JFK’s situation, did cause, very unique and noteworthy changes to the skin of his upper body and face. A physician familiar with Addison’s would spot this immediately from several yards away.

JFK had been taking the only known treatment for Addison’s at the time, cortisone, for many years. It was a very expensive drug until the mid-1950s, when a way was found to synthesize it, so it suddenly became much cheaper, and a “wonder drug”.

However, there were concerns that taking a large amount of cortisone could make a person mentally unstable, even clinically paranoid and dangerous. Even though many doctors believed this back then, it is not true.

Then, in 1956, the top Hollywood actor James Mason, at the peak of his career, appeared in a movie called Bigger Than Life, about a man who had to take cortisone to save his life, but then turned into an insane, homicidal maniac.

His performance was described as “chilling”.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049010/

Finally what set it all off was the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the realization that JFK could on his own, start World War III, resulting in a world conflagration.

Thus the logical chain was complete.

JFK has a disease, the treatment for which requires him to take a large quantity of a drug that could (will?) turn him paranoid and violently insane. And this insanity could cause him to start World War III.

I will add that JFK had been asked to resign because of his medical conditions, and had refused.

Thus, *someone* could conclude that JFK is too dangerous to live.

The media totally destroyed Johnson, Nixon, Ford. The media elected Carter. Reagan beat the media the last President to do so.

Not a conspiracy theory, per se, but even though flawed, a chain of deduction.

That is, if you had been in a position of power at the time, and had this chain of deduction pointed out to you, how would you have grasped it? In summary:

1) The president has a severe disease, and the only drug he can take for it may be making him paranoid, psychotic, and homicidal.

2) The US has just been through a major crisis, in which either the president, or the USSR, could have started a nuclear war, and came very close to doing so.

3) The president refuses to leave office voluntarily.

Is there any possibility that given this information, you would agree that the president must be removed from office before he could start a war?

Kennedy was a good candidate for media promotion. He was handsome, likeable and probably personable. He unfortunately grew up in a family of intelligent, capable people who were almost totally immoral.

He shared some things with Clinton in that area.

I once met one of the PT boat commanders in Kennedy’s squadron. I talked to him a good bit about JFK. He said they all liked him. His actions after his boat was sunk were admirable. On the other hand he said getting a PT boat rammed by a destroyer was about the worst thing one could imagine for a PT boat captain.

As he said, they were the fastest thing on the water.

“After maybe 15 minutes, it began to sink in and the mood changed. I recall more than one saying “I am glad he was shot but hope he doesn’t die”.

Wow... I guess it’s true, evil idiots on both sides.

The south must have truly sucked then. You know, no matter how much I disagree with Obama/Obummer, never would I be “glad” a fellow human being is shot. AND even more distressing is the fact how young you and your classmates were at the time - proof that “hate” is indoctrinated in children by their parents. It must have been tough to be the "Catholic girl" hearing you idiots gloat about the President being shot...

Humans must evolve so much more for us to have a true chance of peace among one another...Hate and religions make this truly impossible.

And, more significantly, on that same day CS Lewis died. It was overshadowed by the passing of Mr Kennedy.

Yup! In short: He’s dead. 49 years. DEAL with it.

And a Commie did it....not some rabid right-wing conspiracy, as the conspiracy whackos want to believe.
