For now, it’s a dramatic victory for the protesters, who have sought closer ties with the European Union and an end to the corruption represented by Yanukovych. It’s especially stunning considering the protesters had—on several occasions—seemed close to defeat.

Except for the trebuchet the tactics seemed more ancient than medieval. Maybe if there were more horses...

They have the national government and Kiev. They perhaps face the Ukrainian Russians who are quite capable of breaking off whatever part of Ukraine that Putin feels Russia needs.

“closer ties with the European Union”

Meaning, expecting a rain of euros from EU.

I wonder how our government would reply to the occupation of the house and senate chambers by several thousand protesters and people throwing Molotov cocktails at the park police in front of the white house.... The media applauds this mob rule in the Ukraine. I FIND IT TRULY AMAZING THAT OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM HAS REMOVED THE SKILLS OF HONESTY,OBJECTIVITY AND ANALYSIS FROM THE TEACHING OF JOURNALISM. ( AND THE KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY AS WELL). Randolph Hearst must be proud. - maybe they will change the name of the Pulitzer to the Hearst Award for yellow journalism... - Because the news industry ( I can’t call them the Press anymore)are working to bring back the cold war. - for ratings.

Here, let me rephrase the title...

The Brave—and Highly Effective—Tactics of the Ukrainian Protests

There, that is far more accurate.

The 2014 Ukrainian Maiden Revolt

This will probably end with the split up of the Ukraine but not as peaceful as was Czechoslovakia but not as violent as the former Yugoslav Republic.

Perhaps not. The only part of Ukraine with a majority of ethnic Russians is Crimea. In the rest of the country most of the Russian speaking people are ethnic Ukrainians (total 77.8% according to Wiki) whose interests aren't necessarily those of Russia.

As well, more than three million ethnic Russians living in Ukraine have re-identified themselves as Ukrainians since 1991, an attitude that makes it more difficult for Moscow to play this ethnic card against Kyiv.

See here for details and comments by "a Ukrainian-descended American software developer, based for the last two years ... in Lviv, in western Ukraine, about 300 miles from the capital, Kyiv, where the worst of the recent civil unrest has taken place"

The main difference between Russian and Ukranian is that Russian will still be spoken 30 years from now.

Those heavily Russian and mostly Russian areas are the heavy industry and coal mining areas. The rest live on welfare and potatoes.

You are right Ukrainians self identify as Ukrainian not Russo-Ukrainian. Partition was a generation ago Socially and economically Ukraine is doing better than Russia who is only getting by on oil and gas sales

My sense from speaking with my Ukrainian friends is that pitical my they want to be unaligned

I was thinking that Stalin replaced Ukranian farmers with Russians during the massive purges of the 1930’s. Is that (another) one of those things that I remember only partly correctly?
