I bought my first house in California in 1985 for $20,000 less than a new truck costs these days

$95,000? Even with an $11,000 discount I wouldn’t touch it.

People don’t make major capital purchases in times of uncertainty.

Well, $84,000 is not a deal even with $11,000 knocked off. What are automakers thinking?

Only a fool would pay that much money for a truck.

They’re thinking they have to pay off the fat union contracts they just agreed to.

When I bought my first truck for $10,000 in 1980 my dad said that is what his first house cost (1940 or so?).

I just heard a podcast where the guy was saying his buddy (union automaker) just got a 25% raise that was part of a new deal. “Well, good for him. I wonder where that increase will come from? I suppose they’ll have to increase the prices of cars?? But who knows???” (DUH!)

The unions have to buy the next election.

Oh, sure. An $11,000 discount, but dealer prep is $2k, paint sealant is $6k, interior abracadabra is $3k, so yeah, $95,000. And of course, once you roll it off the lot it’s worth $29K according to Carvana.

Sooner or later they are going to realise they have priced themselves right out of business.

The vast majority of people simply can NOT afford the prices of new vehicles.

My non expert opinion is that the car business is unsustainable in its current form.

I can’t remember who and where, but just the other day someone was saying that they had been offered by a dealer a new electric vehicle for $10K. I understand electric vehicles are really stacking up at US dealers.

I found that very hard to believe, but they were pretty emphatic about it.

It is pure idiocy for anyone to buy a new truck or car these last few years especially. I can’t think of a much more stupid economic decision to make beyond just burning or flushing your money away.

Recent data from Edmunds reveals that an unprecedented 17% of American car purchasers now have monthly car payments of $1,000, a significant increase from just 7% three years ago. This trend highlights the extent to which consumers, despite being financially stretched, are willing to take on massive auto debt in these uncertain economic times as macroeconomic headwinds pile up.

I bought my first house in California in 1985 for $20,000

Who cares?

That was a whole lot of currency devaluation ago.

What does that house sell for today?

What was your annual take home pay in 1985? What is you annual take home pay today?

The car dealer isn't ripping you off. Neither is the realtor.

Big Government is ripping you off.

Way too expensive.

My 2020 Suburban with 95K on it is worth more than I paid new.

Crazy.
