How a Jewish man saved America
The Jerusalem Connection, Int’l. ^ | Nov/Dec 2006 | Dr. Richard Booker

Posted on 11/22/2006, 2:31:24 AM by Salem

In 1975 the United States Postal Department issued a stamp honoring a man named Haym Salomon for his contribution to the cause of the American Revolution. This stamp was uniquely printed on the front and the back. On the glue side of the stamp, the following words were printed in pale, green ink. “Financial Hero - Businessman and broker Haym Salomon was responsible for raising most of the money needed to finance the American Revolution and later to save the new nation from collapse.” I personally have one of these stamps. Historians who have studied the story of Haym Salomon all agree that without his “contribution to the cause,” there would be no America today.

Haym Salomon bought and sold financial papers to raise money for Robert Morris, who was the Superintendent of Finance for the Continental Congress. He believed that America would be a safe haven for the Jews. But this son of a rabbi also believed that one day in the future Jerusalem would rise from the dust, the Jews would return to their ancient homeland, and Israel and Jerusalem would once again be the home of the wandering Jew. Salomon determined to do all that he could to finance the Revolution so that America could survive until that future time when his people would once again fill the streets of Jerusalem.

From one crisis to the next, Robert Morris went to Haym Salomon for help, and Salomon always responded. Haym Salomon gave his entire personal fortune of over $800,000 to the cause of the Revolution. This debt was never repaid. He died, sick and penniless, at the age of 45 on January 6, 1785, leaving behind a young widow, Rachel, and four children all under the age of seven. Rachel tried for months after Haym’s death to collect on personal loans that he had made to Robert Morris, to the Congress and others. She was requested to turn all her securities and certificates over to the State Treasurer of Pennsylvania for evaluation. After several months she made further inquiries and was informed that all of the papers relating to her inheritance had been lost.

Haym Salomon was buried in Mikveh Israel Cemetery in Philadelphia in a grave which is now unmarked. Since we cannot identify his grave, we cannot even pay our respects at his graveside or erect a marker.

But the story of Haym Salomon doesn’t end with an unmarked grave. There is a plaque on a brick wall bordering the cemetery that was placed by Haym’s great-grandson, William Salomon in 1917. It says, “To the Memory of Haym Salomon … interred in this Cemetery, the location of the grave being now unknown… .”

Was it just a coincidence that the year this plaque was erected was the same year of the Balfour Declaration issued by the British which begins, “His majesty’s Government views with favor the establishing in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people”? Was it just a coincidence that in 1975, when the U.S. Postal Department issued the stamp honoring Haym Salomon, that during the same year the Israeli government issued a stamp honoring Harry Truman, the American President who was the first head of state to recognize Israel?

As Haym Salomon believed, America has indeed been a safe haven for the Jewish people, and Israel has been reborn. As we celebrate America, may we remember the great debt we owe to Haym Salomon. While we may not be able to repay him personally, we can honor him by standing firm in our support and prayers for a strong and secure Israel and a united Jerusalem under the rule of Haym’s Salomon’s spiritual descendants, the Jewish people.

An interesting piece of American history not many are familiar with. It is this type of sacrifice by early Americans that laid the foundation for this nation.

It is another reason why I support Israel against her enemies.

Wow. A sad, yet wonderful story.

$800,000 in that day was a monstrous sum.

If there were a way to repay him more directly, I would endorse it.

Has there ever been a movement to see him memorialized in a more grand and lasting manner? It would make a statement on a number of fronts.

Actually, the first time I ever heard of him was through Pastor Jon Courson and the Middle East series he did almost two years ago now. One of the less high profile members of the group we know as the Founding Fathers, who is certainly due more attention than he is given. Having the United States Postal issue a stamp isn't too shabby, though!

As it is, it seems to me Salomon and his efforts would be fodder for Jew-hating conspiracy theorists who spend their days trying to prove a global Jewish banking cabal seeking to dominate the world through the US, since its creation.

Personally I think his motives were just as noble and high minded as the story portrays, like the rest of the Colonial leadership the revisionist Left likewise spends their bitter, sorry days trying to impugn and discredit.  !

I'm a little sick and tired of this sort of thing happening to real heroes.

"...this sort of thing happening to real heroes."

Of course you have read how the signatories of the Declaration of Independance fared as well:

What happened to the Signers of the Declaration of Independence?

There was a heavy price by a few to establish this nation.

One of our relatives (who left no direct descendants), General Smallwood, managed to get his home occupied, burned, looted, pillaged, or otherwise destroyed in TWO wars, both the Revolution and the War of 1812.

There's an old tree in the back that's been nipped many times by tornados. It was there in his day and at the founding of the Republic. Maryland keeps the place as General Smallwood state park ~ well worth the visit.

Thank you both. I learn something...always a good thing.

Coincidence? You tell me.

Thank you so much for posting this fascinating story from American history!

Dave, I thought you might like to ping homeschooling folk, or know a keeper of such a list.

Salomon died in 1785, of tuberculosis, caught while in a British prison.

This, along with many additional details of this Polish Jew's life from here.

This link will help I think for the sake of the Homeschooling idea, and I would suggest that included in this story would be a story regarding the creation of the Great Seal of the United States.

It is not well known that located above the symbol for America, the eagle on the Seal (as seen on the back of a US 1$ bill), is the Seal of Solomon (and Salomon really does sound a LOT like Soloman, no?).

I don'thave the proof, for all the homework I have done didn't reveal which artist was credited w/ arranging the required 13 stars in that configuration, but perhaps it is no coincidence that the Star of David on our Seal forshadowed indeed what happened so many years later in Jerusalem.

Mr. H. S. would be pleased to know that, maybe, he was honored in a rather permanent way.

I'm thinking, also, that had there been tracks available, this fundraiser for the Revolution would have been a golfer.
