Funny thing happened at work today

I own a company that repairs and replaces garage doors and openers and had a customer today that blew my mind.

She told me on the phone she had disassembled her door and couldn't put it back together. When I arrived she kept calling herself stupid and couldn't understand why she couldn't fix this since she was an engineer and a German at that.

When she raised the other door I noticed on her car an NRA sticker on the windshield.

Well I looked at her problem and it was simply two 1/2 inch nuts and bolts she had taken out of the tow arm that connects the opener to the door. All that was required was to simply put the two bolts back into the holes that were there and put the nuts on and tighten them.

I humored her so not to embarass her, seeing she was an engineer and all. I struck up a conversation noting she was an NRA member, I remarked how she must be a Sarah Palin fan.

"I can't stand her!" she retorted, "do you like her?"

"Well yeah" I said, "but don't be mad at me" I joked.

"No no" she responded "I just can't stand her, she is so uneducated and you should hear what the people in Europe are saying about her."

I was laughing inside because here was a German woman, living in the USA who was an engineer and couldn't put two bolts she had removed back into the holes where they went, mouthing Sarah Palins education.

After she wrote me a nice check for her stupidity and lack of any hands on skills (by the way she mouthed McCain's education too) I thanked her and drove away.

I called my friends to tell them this story and one said "You should have asked her if she thought Sarah Palin could have put those two bolts back in their holes".

Just a funny story and a little view into how certain people think education trumps real experience anyway no matter how little experience they have.

Small reason why I believe vocational/technical high schools and colleges to be as good as or better than some colleges.

I don’t have a college education, but you put something in front of me and if it’s not extremely heavy, it’ll be put together. Various things around the home can also be fixed as well. I could also hold conversations with a large variety of people, including NASA scientists.

Education is by no means a measure of one’s common sense.

The more education you pack in your brain the more common sense you force out.

Seeing as she is an engineer, you should not be surprised. ;^)

You should have asked her if she thought Sarah Palin could have put those two bolts back in their holes."

That would be epic. Sometimes it's worth risking your job to make a comment like that.

The European women I know are creeped-out by the religion thing. They equate that with being "uneducated." It's the whole secular-humanism-is-the-highest-form-of-life concept.

Yeah. Those Germans are an aggressively stupid bunch. My extremely liberal history professor this semester told the class yesterday that while in Australia for the 2004 election (of course he voted Kerry) he was accosted by a group of Germans. They were all in a bar and were harassing him about our election and EV process. He said they actually said we had to change our electoral vote system to popular vote, and that since the US has so much influence in the world, THEY should have a say in who is elected. Even my liberal twit professor was appalled. There is a mental illness running rampant in this world today.

That’s part of what I love about the First Dude: how he hasn’t bought into the everyone-should-go-to-college bit and has been actively promoting voc ed.

It doesn’t dawn on them that the reason we have so much influence in the world is exactly because our system is not like the European one.

Geesh

She probably can’t even cook arugula.

It all depends on what kind of oven she uses.

Germans are still trying to cope with themselves for the Second World War.

"Funny thing happened at work today."

Yeah, me too.

(Warning, thread hijack!)

Not my intent.

I shut down an twenty million operation today, Engineering Stop Order.

I'm but a lowly inspector but after finding the depth of the problem they shut down the entire operation.

(and no, in advance the problem parts were made in the ole USA not China)

Meanwhile I suspect the spin will be

"We found out why nothing passes test and everything will be fine now"

30 years of this stuff, you can't make it up!

Off topic, except for your profession...several years ago, we'd done a remodel and had our twin/single doors reframed to a more desirable double, and our contractor had a local door guy special-order the wooden one we wanted (those aluminum ones are cheaper, but also look cheaper, IMO).

I was really impressed how he hauled everything in on his flat trailer, set up his benches, fan and "Rush Radio" in the garage in 120 degree heat and put the whole thing together and up all by his ownsome.

LOL!

No offence! Honestly!

But from the expieriences I have had, having worked on several college campuses I stand by my remark.

That being said, YOU may be the exception! :^)

One of the libs I work with actually said this:

“Can you believe Sarah Palin and her ‘holier than thou’ attitude about KEEPING her Down Syndrome baby?”

Yep. When it comes to Socialists, you can’t make this stuff up. This woman has no husband, no kids, and lives with her smelly old dog. How rich her life must be.

My brother works in New Orleans in City Hall and owns a company in charge of getting New Orleans government buildings rebuilt.

He is frustrated because the city hires guys with doctorates to do something and they hold lectures for hours instead of doing what they were hired to do. They love to teach but can't actually do what they are teaching.
