Noob Forum?

Posted on 02/11/2010 10:09:01 AM PST by wizard1961

Would a forum to invite newbies to ask questions help increase participation?

There will probably be a wonderful demonstration of how a noob gets zotted any time now on this thread:

“I guess you don’t want people around here to like you? “

You can dish it out, right?

No, people can hate me if they want. Or you can think of it as reverse-hazing. After reading folks worrying about my & maybe my thin skin... not so much! You wanna piece of this? jk/lol

On the other hand, I actually had a point. If Noobs need help in finding help, and they do, then things could be improved.

Look, the Tea Parties are brining in many new folks to conservatism. Let’s increase our retention rate.

i think the point is that FR has done just dandy since it’s inception. it works fine just the way it is. you being here less than a month wouldn’t know that, so some of us “old-timers” will clue you in to that fact : )

Doesn’t he remind you of the new employee, just graduated from college, who shows up at his first staff meeting and tries to tell the CEO all the things he “should” be doing to make the company better?

BTW, Welcome to FR, n00b. There are better ways to suggest changes than irritating the natives.

“We brought down Dan Ratherbiased just fine with this interface. What success have you had with your software? “

Like I said, if you are content with your inflence, then you do not need to change a thing.

How did that 2008 election work out for ya?

Exactly! We don't even require proper use of capital letters, although we should! :-)

“What success have you had with your software? “

OK, it is not about my software — I do not write stuff for the internet. I was just saying I know we could increase visitor retention — if that is what we want to do.

we have no problem with retention rate. the only people we DON”T retain are TROLLS and people that get themselves on double secret probation and zotted for misbehavior.

“It’s self-selecting.”

agreed.

“Free Republic has no need to kiss up to anyone.”

agreed.

“You cannot expect a very successful forum to conform itself to your wishes”

agreed, and I don’t.

“which it has done very well without ...”

Yes... very well... but why not do even better?

What's so confusing about this?

"Jump right in!
Most visitors to Free Republic are attracted to our very popular (and, warning: addictive) conservative news and discussion forum which can be found by clicking here or following any of the forum links in the sidebars."

Every website has a learning curve, this one is no different...becoming familiar with this forum as well as any other website/forum requires a bit of a time commitment on the user's part. We're not a website that caters to everyone, we cater to people of a particular philosophy. We're big enough and have made enough of an impact in the past that people know who we are. We have no interest in playing nice-nice with middle-of-the-roaders. Hell, if DUmmies can come on here and figure out how to use the forum, anyone can. No need for a daycare center...

The interface, no... search on the other hand could be considered a tool of Satan...
