Iceman's 'Girlfriend' Found [ Lady of Introd ]
Discovery News ^ | Wednesday, July 20, 2011 | Rossella Lorenzi

Posted on 07/25/2011 3:49:54 AM PDT by SunkenCiv

Italian workers building an addition to a kindergarten have unearthed a well preserved female skeleton who might be relatively contemporaneous with Ötzi, the Iceman mummy discovered 20 years ago in a melting glacier in South Tyrol.

The "Lady of Introd" or "Ötzi's girlfriend," as the skeleton was nicknamed in Italy, was found in the tiny Alpine village of Introd, in the Val d'Aosta, famous to be the preferred vacationing spot for both Pope John II and his successor Benedict XVI.

According to archaeologists and anthropologists, the woman has been lying on her right side, with her head facing west, for about 5,000 years.

The dating to the third millennium B.C. was based on the skeleton's burial position and stratigraphy, said Vittorio Anglesio, mayor of Introd.

"She appears to have been buried without any grave goods. However, we are now going to extend the dig to better investigate the area," Anglesio told Discovery News.

Moved to a laboratory, the skeletal remains are now being analyzed in order to assess the diet, the age at death, possible diseases and causes of death.

now THAT is a dirt nap. probably tired of neanderathal kids running around asking when the woolly mammoth will be ready to eat and whining that no one had discovered fire yet.

Pretty sure he meant John-Paul II. John II served from 533-535.

“In particular, we still know little about what grains people ate at this time, so the Lady of Introd could provide direct evidence of a diet composed of wheat, barley, or millet,” Killgrove said.

Why “in particular...”? I would think her entire diet would be interesting.

To echo one of the commenters from the site...Was she hot?

As they spread out from this initial spot, they may find the limbs. If not, they may find this was a burial of a number of people who died at the same time.

She appears to have long legs for her torso size, but it’s difficult to tell. Also, I just noticed in the lower left one of the missing arm bones.

250 millimeters = 9.84251969 inches times 4, so about a yard. She wasn’t shrimpy.

Interesting that they have dated her to about the same time as Otzi.

Years ago I speculated on FR about what Otzi was doing way up on that mountain, apparently making toward the pass, with an arrow wound in his back.

My speculation was that he was on a raid from over the pass and got chased and killed. I wrote a short story with a plot that the raid was to steal one of those Italian babes—VA VA VOOM if you know what I mean, and I think you do.

Based on the current evidence I think it is safe to assume that Otzi was a woman beater. Of course, I am relying on my training as an anthropologist.

The key is, to raid the villages at the top of the mountains, makes for an easier getaway, particularly when carrying off some stone age wench.

Well as member of academia I try not to jump to any conclusions. Science must be driven by facts and facts alone. By the way, because she seems to have no artifacts in her grave, it appears that Otzi not only beat her to death, but then he stole her stuff!

I actually teach Native American Antrhopology at a community college. It always amazes me how supposedly well educated people can jump to such outlandish conclusions based on the slimmest of evidence. I would not doubt that some serious anthropologist will come up with the same silliness I have been spouting. He/she will probably publish a paper drawing the same conclusions that people have been joking about on this thread, only it will be taken seriously.
