Pictures: Mass Sacrifice Found Near Aztec Temple

Sixteen feet (five meters) below street level in Mexico City, archaeologists have found a jumble of 1,789 bones from children, teenagers, and adults along with the complete skeleton of a young woman.

The burial, dating to the 1480s, lies at the foot of the main temple in the sacred ceremonial precinct of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, founded by the Aztecs in 1325. The Aztecs dominated central Mexico until falling to Spanish conquistadores in 1521.

Although several burials with multiple remains have been uncovered previously in this precinct, this is the first that includes human bones from such a wide span of ages.

The discovery offers a rare opportunity to study Aztec funerary rituals and religious beliefs. Few burials from that culture have come to light, most likely because they lie beneath modern buildings.

Isn't multiculturalism wonderful?

"Michael Harner, in his 1997 article The Enigma of Aztec Sacrifice, estimates the number of persons sacrificed in central Mexico in the 15th century as high as 250,000 per year. "

Where can I get verification of this with references? I would like to do a study on what happened to cultures that practiced human sacrifice.

Google Bernal Diaz who wrote “Conquest of New Spain”.

Here’s the google search http://bit.ly/NHTBkd

Here’s the book.

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/32474/32474-h/32474-h.htm

Bernal Diaz was Hernando Cortez’s lieutenant. He was known as the oldest lieutenant. His book was only translated into english in the 1980’s.

There’s lots of references to human sacrifice. However, the book also shows something that was not mentioned in English speaking texts before. The Aztec priests were homosexual. They would “act up” right in front of Cortez and his men.

The Aztecs were just like the Caananites described in the bible who practiced human sacrifice and homosexuality.

It turns out the two practices go together.

of persons sacrificed in central Mexico in the 15th century as high as 250,000 per year.

How horrible and barbaric they are, and we with our own over a million abortions a year, are no less barbaric. Many that they brutally murdered at least had the chance to fight back, but not our defenseless babies. They can do nothing but scream silently and die horribly, while society on the whole pays scant attention, like they don't even exist at all.

Was smallpox endemic to North America in the 1480’s? I thought it was imported by the evil white man beginning in 1492.

Retraction already printed. Smallpox hit Mexico beginning around 1521 when the Spaniards finally conquered the Aztecs. The Aztecs probably contracted the disease from eating Spanish captives during the conflict or from being in contact with the Spaniards period. I knew better.

And not a moment too soon.

But ..but ..but ... uh... the indigenous people were oh-so peaceful until those EVIL Spaniards landed and kidnapped all their women and made them sex slaves. That's when they became 'violent', and solely for self-defense purposes you know. Before the SPANISH INVASION the 'peaceful indians' just traded beads, shiny rocks, and sea shells. And they worshiped the Sun, Moon and Stars and would dress in fancy home spun costumes then dance the nights away.

And, and, and .. uh .. all those bodies were of people who accidentally fell off the Temple stairs. They didn't have OSHA or Building Code Inspectors back then so some bad stuff happened every now and then.

Yep, that's it. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

(I don't know how but I'm pretty sure this is all BUSH'S FAULT!)

I’m not sure what you want verification of. If it is confirmation that the Aztecs practiced human sacrifice on a large scale and engaged in cannibalism, these are rather commonly known facts until the left decided that this bit of history would damage the self-esteem of “indigenous peoples”. The Mexican government today actively tries to suppress discussion of this and is aided by “court” academics.

For references, start with Prescott’s Conquest of Mexico. Nothing much more recent is as honest. Cortez’s letters from Mexico can be found easily and are a primary source. Bernal Diaz de Castillo is another easy to find eye-witness source.

I hope I interpreted your question correctly.

LOL -- well done.

This is why I thought Mel Gibson was so clever with his film Apocalypto. He totally brought the horrific ways of the indians to public attention. By the end of the movie, when you see those Spanish galleons floating in the bay, you are flooded with a sense of relief. Western Civilization -- Christendom -- has come to save the day. The movie ends there, but you know it's going to be okay, and that's the point.

Back around 2003 I had the pleasure of touring the Mayan ruins of Copan, Honduras. At the very back of the complex, there was the ongoing process of expansion and digging out more and more from the jungle.......

Thanks ;-)
I hate how the libtards have distorted history. White man Bad. Brown or 'Red' man Good.

And now I'm going to have to watch that movie, like tonight. I've kept skipping over it when I've looked through the Comcast On Demand movies.

(watched Superman II last night, Superman ('I' ) last week.)

To me, a ‘jumble of bones’ indicates individual bones not closely connected to a complete skeleton.

This doesn’t mean ‘burial ritual” to me. It sounds more like a trash heap of bones discarded after a cannibalistic feast.

Yum, yum, who’s got some gum? I think I ate me mum.

"Wow, that’s the first time I’ve seen that or been aware of that practice. Such charming folks."

The current practice is to depict the Spaniards as voracious villains and all the peoples of the New World as peaceful, enlightened victims. That may have been the case in some instances, but the Aztecs - I doubt the conquistadors had any problems sleeping after burying that particular blood-soaked "civilization."
