The United States at Night April-Oct 2012
NASA ^ | 12/6/2012 | NASA

This image of the continental United States at night is a composite assembled from data acquired by the Suomi NPP satellite in April and October 2012. The image was made possible by the satellite's "day-night band" of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe dim signals such as city lights, gas flares, auroras, wildfires and reflected moonlight.

What is more impressive is North Korea at night compared to the rest of the area esp. Seoul Korea and Japan.

The lights seem to peter out at all points of 96 degrees West (Dallas, TX). What gives?

Its interesting how there is a significant line between east and west roughly following Monterrey/SanAntonio/Austin/Dallas/OklahomaCity/Wichita/Topeka/Lincoln/Sioux falls/Grand Forks/Winnipeg. The terrain doesn’t change much though the land fertility and rainfall might.

I wonder what that big cluster of light is in Saskatchewan...

“Good recon to where to live a free life.”

Well put.

Interestingly, looking at the map (at the top), central and north PA looks to be “on the dark side”.

These days, the darker places are more likely to be the most conservative, and to offer the best chances for holding life together when the bright spots fall apart.

I saw the same, drew the same “land here’s right nice...” and that’s where folk settled. There is also the increase in elevation and the fact you start to see the Rockies somewheres in Kansas and Nebraska.

Ma done told Pa to stop right here, we ain’t a climbin’ any mountains. Build my house now.
