They're usually thought of as a brutish, primitive species.
So what woman would want to give birth to a Neanderthal baby?
Yet this incredible scenario is the plan of one of the worlds leading geneticists, who is seeking a volunteer to help bring mans long-extinct close relative back to life.
Professor George Church of Harvard Medical School believes he can reconstruct Neanderthal DNA and resurrect the species which became extinct 33,000 years ago.
His scheme is reminiscent of Jurassic Park but, while in the film dinosaurs were created in a laboratory, Professor Churchs ambitious plan requires a human volunteer.
He said his analysis of Neanderthal genetic code using samples from bones is complete enough to reconstruct their DNA.
He said: Now I need an adventurous female human.
It depends on a hell of a lot of things, but I think it can be done.
Professor Churchs plan would begin by artificially creating Neanderthal DNA based on genetic code found in fossil remains. He would put this DNA into stem cells.
These would be injected into cells from a human embryo in the early stages of life.
It is thought that the stem cells would steer the development of the hybrid embryo on Neanderthal lines, rather than human ones.
He says Neanderthals were not the lumbering brutes of the stereotype, but highly intelligent. Their brains were roughly the same size as mans, and they made primitive tools. Cloning the caveman: Geneticist Professor George Church

He believes his project could benefit mankind.
He told German magazine Der Spiegel: Neanderthals might think differently than we do. They could even be more intelligent than us.

Wouldn't that, as you said, be like " trying to cross a cat with a dog?"
That's exactly what it is, and I think it's creepy.
BTW, we use heirloom seeds in our garden. I don't want our great grand children coming out with fins (or laying eggs or something).
NOW I realize why hillary klintoon has been so anxious.
No one knows what will happen to future generations of humans because of it. Babies, someday, may be born with fish heads.
Then again, babies, someday, may NOT be born with fish heads.
Correct. Nat GEO has a show out called "The Human Family Tree", which traces our common ancestries out of Africa.
Neanderthals and humans inter-bred when humans came to Europe.
The DNA of the descendants of those that DID NOT leave Africa do not have Neanderthal DNA.
Didn’t we already unfreeze some ice age guy and train him as a lawyer?
My point was that if Monsanto can cross plant DNA with animal DNA, why would you think that ‘human’(modern man) DNA cannot be crossed with Neanderthal DNA?
YOU have Neanderthal DNA, pretty much everyone does. Except for one specific group. Care to guess which group?
Yabbadabbadoo!!!
Idiots are still looking for that impossible missing link.
Now playing God to invent proof of evolution.
Uh....OK. I'll play. Is this a gotcha question, or maybe a good joke?
Ok. So hit me. I'm braced. Who doesn't have Neanderthal DNA?
We are in the 'age' of ANYTHING GOES.
It is legal to turn males into females, and vice versa.
It is legal to kill children before (or 'as') they leave the womb.
True. Isn't it odd that there are SO FEW of us who know that ?
I fully expect both of us to be flamed for even mentioning it, even though it's a fact.
There are scientists who state that DNA is passed bi-driectionally from mother to child. I.E., if a woman conceives a child and carries the child, she also receives some of the child’s DNA in her brain.
Now, there are plenty of stupid women who would jump at the chance to do something like this, but it is pretty stupid.
I am all for it. The men would be fantastic professional football or hockey players with that upper body strength. The women would be as pretty as Michelle Obama so would find mates.
I haven’t scrolled down the comments yet, but I wonder how many variations there are of this:
“Sandra Fluke’s available.”
Read post #25.
Neanderthals became extinct for a reason. Leave it, and them there.
LOL!
You would have to define 'normal'. All creatures on Earth are intelligent.
