In the run-up to the expansion of a quarry near Mammendorf in [Frstenfeldbruck Bavaria Germany], finds and settlement structures come to light again and again. This year there is an enigmatic double grave.
Mammendorf - A mysterious double grave from the Bronze Age has been discovered near Mammendorf in the Magdeburger... "The double grave was covered by six millstones and a stone block weighing around one ton, a menhir," said project manager and archaeologist Susanne Friederich on Wednesday.
"The surface of the stone stele was provided with bowl-like depressions in three places." Anyone who was buried under this heavy stone ceiling in such an elaborate manner must show further investigations.
"The millstones are so well preserved that they would still be suitable for producing flour today," said Friederich. Parts of a 4200 to 3200 year old settlement from the Bronze and Iron Ages were also discovered.
A total of more than 250 archaeological structures have been recorded. These are around 2500 year old iron age mine houses.
"These were residential or workshop buildings," said Friederich. The archaeologists found an approximately three centimeter long horse's head in a pit house.
The clay material had been polished so well that after more than 2500 years the surface is still shiny metallic. "The figure shows the great importance of horses at that time, as an expression of great wealth," said the archaeologist. In addition, numerous ceramic fragments and animal bones were recovered.
