Paleontologists Say Gigantic Dinosaur Bones Could Be From Largest Land Animal Ever To Walk The Earth

"It's obviously still inside the rock, so we have a few more years of digging ahead of us."

Paleontologists in Argentina have discovered the fossilized remains of a 98 million-year-old titanosaur that they say may be from the largest animal ever to walk the earth.

A team of researchers with Naturales y Museo, Universidad de Zaragoza, and Universidad Nacional del Comahue actually found the remains in 2012, but excavation work only began in 2015, according to paleontologist Jose Luis Carballido of the Museo Egidio Feruglio. In a new report published in the journal Cretaceous Research, the group lays out what they’ve found.

“In this contribution we present a giant titanosaur sauropod from the Candeleros Formation (Cenomanian, circa 98 Ma) of Neuquén Province, composed of an articulated sequence of 20 most anterior plus 4 posterior caudal vertebrae and several appendicular bones. This specimen clearly proves the presence of a second taxon from Candeleros Formation, in addition to Andesaurus, and is here considered one of the largest sauropods ever found, probably exceeding Patagotitan in size,” the published report says.

Patagotitan is a species that lived 100 million to 95 million years ago and measured up to 122 feet long and weighed more than 70 tons. The new find appears to be 10% to 20% larger than those attributed to Patagotitan, the biggest dinosaur ever identified, according to a statement Wednesday from the National University of La Matanza’s CTYS scientific agency.

“It is a huge dinosaur, but we expect to find much more of the skeleton in future field trips, so we’ll have the possibility to address with confidence how really big it was,” Alejandro Otero, a paleontologist with Argentina’s Museo de La Plata, told CNN via email.

But researchers really don’t know what they’ve found.

“While anatomical analysis does not currently allow us to regard it as a new species, the morphological disparity and the lack of equivalent elements with respect to coeval taxa also prevent us from assigning this new material to already known genera. A preliminary phylogenetic analysis places this new specimen at the base of the clade leading to Lognkosauria, in a polytomy with Bonitasaura. The specimen here reported strongly suggests the co-existence of the largest and middle-sized titanosaurs with small-sized rebbachisaurids at the beginning of the Late Cretaceous in Neuquén Province, indicating putative niche partitioning,” says the report.

“Titanosaurs belong to the sauropod family, which means they were herbivores, had massive bodies and long necks and tails,” Phys.org reported. “Such dinosaurs would have had few worries from meat-eating enemies if they managed to grow to full size. Their fossils have been found on all continents except Antarctica. The researchers conclude by noting that more digging in the area will likely reveal more fossils from the same dinosaur and perhaps evidence of its true size.”

The paleontologists are still searching for more body parts, buried deep in rock, especially the large femur or humerus bones, which can be used to more accurately estimate a long-extinct creature’s body mass.

“We have more than half the tail, a lot of hip bones,” said Carballido, who also worked on the classification of Patagotitan a few years ago. “It’s obviously still inside the rock, so we have a few more years of digging ahead of us.”

Just my own guess, but I would venture more than a quarter of current diameter, which is a whole lot of circumference! Add the mass impacts that have been added from the solar system debris and we have gained a significant amount of mass since before the dinosaurs and after.

This notion is related to something Tom Van Flanderan was fond of speculating, that there was a large watery world roughly in the orbit of the asteroid field which finally tore apart due to added mass and none flexible crustal make-up. The name for that planet shows up in Sumerian cuneiforms as Tiamat.

BTW, I am convinced that the speed of light has slowed as the Universe has expanded, due to the increase in particles poping in and out of physical existence as the zero point field has increased with the latant stress of spacetime expansion. The zero point field has increased in density as the Universe has expanded, kind of like latent energy when you stretch a rubberband.

One aspect: https://samaritanministries.org/blog/did-more-oxygen-and-pressure-in-the-pre-flood-world-have-health-benefits

Modern scientific discoveries may give us some clues as to why the pre-flood world was so different. Scientists have discovered air bubbles that have been trapped in fossilized amber (tree sap). As the tree sap rolled down the side of the tree, it captured the atmosphere in these air bubbles, which when analyzed reveals an earlier atmosphere had about 35 percent oxygen compared to today's 21 percent.

According to the fossil record, many plants and animals were of much greater size than those we see today. Dragonflies had wingspans of over 3 feet, cockroaches were 18 inches long and cattails grew to be 60 feet tall. While we may never know for sure why all of these things occurred, we know that when God said His creation was “very good,” it was indeed, very good.

In addition to the increased oxygen, other studies have suggested that there was a greater air pressure as well. New Scientist magazine, which comes from an evolutionary perspective, explains: One implication is that the atmospheric pressure of the Earth would have been much greater during the Cretaceous Era, when the bubbles formed in the resin. A dense atmosphere could also explain how the ungainly pterosaur, with its stubby body and wingspan of up to 11 meters, could have stayed airborne. The spread of angiosperms, flowering plants, during the Cretaceous era could have caused the high oxygen levels.

Hyperbaric chambers are producing some amazing health benefits. The Mayo Clinic has used hyperbaric chambers for treatments of wounds that won’t heal, decompression sickness, infections, and the release of growth factors and stem cells. Hyperbaric treatment can also be very helpful with carbon monoxide poisoning, smoke inhalation, gas gangrene, crush injuries, necrotizing (premature death of cells), soft tissue infections, compartment syndrome, compromised skin grafts, and enhanced healing in diabetic wounds.

Not only is this artificial “atmosphere” good for the body, it also seems to be wonderful for plants. At Keio University in Tokyo, Japan, Dr. Kei Mori placed a cherry tomato plant in a similar chamber where he filtered out ultraviolet light and increased the pressure so the plant would take in carbon dioxide faster. The results were astounding. In two years his cherry tomato plant was 14 feet tall and had over 900 tomatoes that were baseball size. The plant went on to be over 45 feet tall and yielded around 15,000 tomatoes. This result may help explain why we see such large plants in the fossil record. In fact, some have suggested that if our pre-flood atmosphere was like a hyperbaric chamber today, not only would it produce the large vegetation seen in fossils but, it may also have contributed as one factor of why people had such long lifespans before the flood of Noah.

Giant Dinosaurs Unearthed in Argentina Based on the fossils of the newfound herbivore sauropod, which has yet to receive a name, scientists think it would have stretched 131 feet (40 meters) in length and weighed 80 tons (73 tonnes). "It's like two semi trucks, one after another, and the equivalent of more than 14 African elephants' weight together," researcher José Luis Carballido, of Museum of Paleontology Egidio Feruglio in Argentina's Patagonia region, said in a statement. - https://www.seeker.com/giant-dinosaurs-unearthed-in-argentina-1768589868.html And I read that an estimated 75% of non-avian dinos remain to be discovered, with possibly 3,400 dinosaur genera existing.

Around 10800 BC North America principally was hit by comet debris for over 100 years causing massive firestorms which burned off vegetation leaving a deep layer called black mat. All the huge and lasting firestorms likely burned off equally massive amounts of O2 which may be why it disappeared. The geological result was the Younger Dryas Age - so cold the once melting Northern Ice Cap reformed. 1000 years later or around 9800 BC, another comet debris barrage ended the YDA; the melt was very sudden - that may be the true origin of the “Flood” as sea levels rose drastically by hundreds of feet worldwide in a few years.

Not buying the Earth expansion bit. Speed of light? Who knows. I’ve wondered about the possibility.

Imagine the earth shaking sound when a herd was roaming about.
The bellowing, the smell..... The t-rex types hunting them.

I’m sure there are some FReepers here that are near my age.

That painting of a dino of this type brings an old comic strip to mind.

That dino is just like “Baby”, who was the dino that Alley Oop would ride on during his adventures in the comic strip.

The diameter of the planet was smaller then, so the gravity was less, allowing for such large creatures.

By what process has the diameter increased since then?

An average Blue Whale weighs between 55-165 tons (50-150 metric tons) and has a typical lifespan of 80-90 years.

...that may be the true origin of the “Flood”...

I'd think that Noah; etal; would have noticed and commented.

That scenario would more likely fit the Sodom and Gommorah story.
