Rare 2,000-Year-Old Makeup and Jewelry Unearthed in Ancient Greco Roman City

Archaeologists working at the ancient Roman city of Aizanoi in Turkey's Kütahya province have made an exciting discovery of rare 2,000-year-old makeup and jewelry products.

The excavations, carried out in collaboration with the Kütahya Governorate and Dumlupınar University, have revealed a cosmetics and jewelry shop located east of the Temple of Zeus.

Professor Gökhan Coşkun, the head of the Archaeology Department at Dumlupınar University, stated that they have found perfume bottles, pieces of jewelry, and remnants of makeup including blushes and eye shadows.

Evidently, the ancient Romans used oyster shells to store their makeup products, and these shells were found abundantly in the excavated shops. In addition to makeup products, the archaeologists have also uncovered hair accessories, jewelry, and cosmetic items in various colors.

Aizanoi, which dates back to 3,000 BCE, was renowned for its impressive structures such as the Temple of Zeus, a remarkably preserved temple dedicated to Zeus, as well as a theater, stadium, baths, a commercial stock market building, a columnaded street, and five bridges, two of which still stand to this day.

2,000 year old makeup looks a lot like the 20 year old makeup under the bathroom sink!

It is still so amazing to me that those cultures were so advanced.

I’ve had girlfriends who left makeup around for almost (but not quite) that long. I’m like, how many shades of whatever this is do you even need?

I wonder what kind of ingredients were in those?

Some makeup has been made with very toxic ingredients. Toxic belladonna was used around the eyes to dilate the pupils.

IIRC, in the 18th Century, French courtiers wore makeup that contained arsenic. Part of the reason (again, if I understand right) was to make the skin more luminous under candle light.

The farts were drowned out by their incessant harping to their drivers about stopping to ask for directions.

“I’m like, how many shades of whatever this is do you even need?”

I learned very early on that when a woman stops at the makeup section to find something to do for awhile. They have to look at and sample every shade carried. Then they wander to the perfume. They can blow an entire day just on the makeups and perfumes.

Haha sounds plausible, and please forgive my unclear reference to Rush Limbaugh’s epic “farding” gag from early in his career. Turns out that “to fard’ is a French derived word for applying makeup. He totally blew up the phone lines back in 1990 by spending the better part of a show talking about women “farding in their cars” without revealing that he was actually saying “fard” and not...the other word.
