resident Joe Biden will use special wartime powers to boost US production of heat pumps, by funding nine manufacturing projects with $169 million from last year's climate bill, the Energy Department said on Friday.
The awards were granted under the emergency authority of the Cold War-era Defense Production Act (DPA), which Biden invoked on the basis of climate change to boost spending on clean energy technology.
'The President is using his wartime emergency powers under the Defense Production Act to turbocharge US manufacturing of clean technologies and strengthen our energy security,' said Biden's National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi in a statement.
Heat pumps can heat and cool homes and businesses more efficiently using thermal transfer, which moves heat from one area to another, rather than generating new heat.
The announcement was the latest in a series of moves to push the US toward more efficient home appliances, and was met with fury by the American Gas Association, a lobbying group for the natural gas industry.
'We are deeply disappointed to see the Defense Production Act, which is intended as a vital tool for advancing national security against serious outside threats, being used as an instrument to advance a policy agenda contradictory to our nation's strong energy position,' AGA President and CEO Karen Harbert said in a statement.
Harbert called natural gas a 'vital tool for emissions reductions and energy system resilience' and said the industry 'should not be unfairly undermined through misuse of the Defense Production Act.'
Natural gas is primarily composed of methane. About 60 percent of American homes use it for space and water heating, according to the US Energy Information Agency.
The Energy Department estimates that heating and cooling buildings in the US accounts for more than 35 percent of the country's energy consumption.

When I bought my home heating was fine, then my thermostat broke. Repairman said it was the wrong type of thermostat because I had a heat pump system. He replaced it and said this will save you money. Maybe it saves me money but all it does is blast cold air. I’m going from Texas to St Louis this winter to stay with my daughter because she has GAS heat.
Most modern gas appliances have electronic ignition. Pilot light ignition is being phased out thanks to the government demands for efficiency.
Where in that pesky constitution thingie is the president granted power to declare war on heat pumps?
Or to declare war in favor of heat pumps?
Where in that pesky constitution thingie is the president given the power to declare war????
ANOTHER boondoggle... he can’t think of enough ways to F up our money
Does anyone doubt the objective of Biden's puppet masters?
Depending on the appliance, some will work ... our gas fireplace works without electricity, and we can light the top burners on our stove. Furnace, tankless water heater & oven are a no-go.
When the electric went out last winter (more than once, as failed redundant systems in our area are not being upgraded) we all piled into our living room and were plenty warm & fed.
If we were forced to go to all-electric (and add in a “mandated” EV as well), there is NO way our aging home could handle the increased demand.
My sister and several friends have heat pumps. It is never warm enough in their homes (IMO), even on relatively mild winter days. Extra socks or slippers, a warm sweater or sweatshirt and a blanket for over your legs helps some, but it is extremely unpleasant to wander away from whatever nest you’ve made. My sister admits she’s cold much of the time from late Fall to Spring, but it used to it now.
Don’t heatpumps rely on those evil refrigerants?
TexasGator will be pleased.
You mean the ones where now you have to flush four times, as opposed to the one time you used to?
Interesting comment
My toilet was not flushing as it should.
I learned that pouring about a cup of muriatic acid ineto the plastic tube adjacent to the flush valve and letting it set a while dissolved the calcium build up and voila....... it worked like it should.
Thanks to You tube that gave the lesson.
Muriatic acid comes from Home Depot and is used to clean up brick joints and such
Indeed. When the law doesn’t mean anything anymore except what you want it to there will be consequences.
From the person that posted that the less you run your engine, the quicker it breaks down ...
Put it up on GiveSendGo, I’ll kick in.
I’d like to hear what declared war we are in gives him the ability to do that.
Special wartime powers
*******
******** = Fake
I posted that gasoline engines rot just sitting. There’s an optimal mix of running and sitting. But I don’t think anyone here can teach you anything. Thanks for discussing.
Environmental policy is about saving the planet the same way CoupFlu policy is about protecting public health.
Maybe you didn’t notice Biden’s speech last week saying Climate Change was the greatest threat to the US? We gots us a War On Climate Change!
“I posted that gasoline engines rot just sitting.”
Were were discussing engines that are only run a few times a year. You had no comeback when Gave examples of these engines lasting decades.
> You had no comeback
Sorry; had probably stopped reading you.
