Being left handed myself, I have to wonder what kinds of products made for right handed people, killed the left handed people...I really cannot imagine this happening....sounds phoney to me...

Well, I'm sure they've taken into account the amount of time it takes to say a number such as "four hundred sixty-three billion, five hundred seventy-nine million, three hundred ninety-five thousand four hundred sixty-two. There are more numbers like that than there are the ones that you can say in a fraction of a second, don't you think? Anyone care to do a more realistic calculation of the time it would take to count that high?

Have you heard of "one, two, skip a few, ninety-nine, one hundred"? It's probably been around forever, but I never heard it until one of my kids said it.

A teacher once asked her class to sum the integers from one to 100. The young Karl Freiderich Gauss--one of mankind's truly great mathematicians--promptly strode to her desk and slapped his small chalkboard on the desk. "There it lies!" He exclaimed.

The correct answer was indeed there. 5,050.

How did he do it?

He realized that you can pair up numbers like so:


  0  1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9.......99 100
100 99 98 97 96 95 94 93 92 91.......01 0

The total of all the numbers in the two rows is 10,100 (100 times 100 plus 50 plus 50). But the second half of the sums is redundant (those greater than 50), so the correct answer is one-half of 10,100 or 5,050.

Try this: Take the first 3 odd numbers: 1 3 5
Double them: 1 1 3 3 5 5
Draw a line: 1 1 3 | 3 5 5
Divide: 355/113...."almost" Pi!

It is the closest rational approximation to pi with both numerator and denominator less than 1,000. It is so accurate you could use it for "pi" for the rest of your life and never have an appreciable error. In fact, I sometimes put it in my computer programs--to perplex anyone examining the code in the future!

That's cool! I've always used 22/7, but knew it wasn't the best approximation to pi. You impressed my son! He made me do it on the calculator right away, lol. He's been learning to program in Java, so I bet he'll use that if the opportunity arises.
