U.S. politician wants to outlaw threatening symbols, possibly including the Sarah Palin map

A Democratic Congressman plans to bring in a bill to outlaw violent symbols targeting members of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Senate, or the judiciary.

In an inteview on CNN, Robert Brady (D-Penn) said he wants to make it a federal crime to use threatening language or symbols against federal officials.

"All we are trying to do is protect ourselves and our staff members," Brady said.

When asked when the legislation would be brought forward, he replied it would be on the "first day when we go back in session".

Brady hinted that a controversial map created by Sarah Palin's political action committee—which featured targets on 20 House districts—would be illegal if his proposal is adopted.

The CNN interviewer pointed out that Palin's map only featured symbols over top of districts, but that didn't dissuade Brady from taking a hard line. "Everyone knows who represents that district," he said.

Brady made his comments following a bipartisan conference call involving members of Congress about how to enhance safety following yesterday's shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords outside a Safeway store in Tuscon.

Well when we finally take over we should just outlaw anything that strikes our fancy or irritates us.

As tragic as yesterday’s events were, the greatest casualty could be the First Amendment.

Don’t let this happen. Speak up for your right to speak up.

And so when is the Vancouver Free Press going to mention the DNCC map with targets over Republican candidates? It’s all over the internet.

But then who reads the Vancouver Free Press?

Sticks and stones, they are nothing.

It's the NAMES that are lethal!

Well, kind of a slippery slope however, if it is to be applied, it will need to be applied to both sides equally. But, given the MSM provides for one side to be more equal than the other, how do you achieve parity? And at what point is telling the truth, speaking facts and calling something for what it really is, going to be considered “dangerous”? Yes, repeal the 1st Amendment and get it over with and define the new system, a communist dictatorship (or totalitarian if you prefer). Remember the words of the one who knew first-hand what real freedom was compared to dictatorship; his words echo through history for the past 2,000 years....”the truth shall set you free.”

Kind of ironic that the 1st amendment is what Giffords read on the floor of the house a couple days ago.

United States federal government elected officials are special. They need special laws to protect them. They aren't ordinary peasants.

There is no such thing as equal protection under the law.

The people who write the laws, are the laws.

I would like a law to outlaw stupidity in government. That would cause the Dhimmicrat Party and half the Republicrat Party to disappear.

I hope this bill is targeted and is never passed. Did I threaten anyone?

B.S. in my humble opinion.

If a law is required to protect federal officials outside of what we have for the people in the first place then "WE THE PEOPLE" as dictated via the constitution is no longer valid. JMO

No official of government should have ANY law devoted to them that isn't applied to all PERIOD.

When we crossed that line, then we start working for government instead of government working for us.

With everything happening today, THIS is the biggest thing on his agenda . . . . surveyor's marks on a map that Sarah Palin has!!??? Is he freakin' kidding me?????

It's the first and second that they hate the most.

Having said that, I'm really getting sick and tired of politicians behaving like they are deserving of anything but contempt. Where does it say that duping enough voters into putting you into office entitles you to more protected anything?

Keep mouthing off dipwads and expose yourselves for the morons that we know you are...
