As part of our settlement with the LAT/WP, we have agreed to post only short excerpts and links from the following LAT/WP related publications. List of publications that must be excerpted.

It's always seemed a little strange to me that any organization in the news business wants to cut down on the number of their readers.

Question:
Is it correct, that when we see an article which may be in another newspaper, which is not on the above list, but it's a copy of say a Washington Post article, we need to excerpt that too -- basically anything which references any of the companies listed above?
E.g. Charles Krauthammer articles appear in townhall.com, but it mentions it's from the WP, then we need to excerpt it, right, because it shows at the bottom of the article, that it's copywrited by the WP.

Question: When an article is originally posted in a prohibited source, but reposted elsewhere, is it OK to post it here from the non-prohibited source?
Charles Krauthammer comes to mind. His stuff comes from the Washington (com)Post, but is also on townhall.com.

Thanks, I thought that was the answer, but I wanted it confirmed, and bring it to the attention of others as well, because one can easily overlook, that something originated at one of the "must be excerpted" sites, when one reads it at another site.

How are we (you) supposed to know who writes for the WP? Also some of these guys feelance too, so you can't put a simple check for "Charles Krauthammer" in the Author and have it work all the time. Arg, what a headache.

Excerpting all articles would be a very poor idea in my opinion, many times newspapers remove their articles after 7-30 days from their server, and we wouldn't be able to access it afterwards.
When the article is posted in its entirety, it is preserved on the FR servers, for future reference.

-- If the threads original posting complies with the short excerpt rule, are we breaking the agreement by posting more of the article in the reply portions of the thread?
Could multiple posters quote excerpts to different parts which would, - in effect, have the whole article on the thread?

These people own a lot, don't they?
By "excerpt" from a broadcast source, are you referring to an article posted on a broadcast website?
You're not saying a "news alert" from off the air is forbidden, are you? (Incidentally, once it's 'on air' isn't it 'the people's' airwaves?)
EG: If they broadcast, "Breaking News, John Kerry Found with Head up Keester" then we can post to breaking news "John F (n) Kerry Found with....etc?

A question and a comment:
Am I correct when I assume that at least some of the "excerpt only" sites are automatically flagged by our servers and others are not?
A reminder to forum members that these "short excerpts" may be composed of any part of the article content. Many forum members simply excerpt the first paragraph or two, losing much of the meaning of the article when they could instead selectively excerpt passages that contain the essential information.

Question: Are you good folks going to have to go through the archives and remove/edit all other posts containing articles from these companies?
If yes, I have a lot of copy and pasting to do. I can't tell you how many times I've taken apart a lefty using a FR search.

news.google.com and pull it from a friendly site.
