Hey Mango is cute.

I have a Senegal and a Conyers in my Living room. Zack and Zoe respectively. They like USA today particularly when JFK's picture is there. You know what they do. Don't know if they do it knowingly but is sure seems to pile up in just that one spot when his picture is there.

Now this is really an abridgement of free speech. Just exactly the type of political free speech that the founders wanted to protect.

The Kiplinger Letter and certain industry periodicals like Iron Age, the journal of the steel industry, have had no-quote policies for years. You want to see what they said, you pay up in full, up front -- and extra for reprints and research. And you couldn't quote them at all, anywhere, for any reason whatsoever. Furthermore, you couldn't subscribe to Iron Age unless you sent your subscription inquiry on company letterhead -- and they'd check you out before they replied or let you buy a subscription.

Welcome to life in the world of the restricted-circulation press.

What remains to be seen is whether Gannett can enforce such a policy selectively, based on the perceived politics of the quoting party. Their indulgence toward DU and commongoals.com may constitute laches and release FR from Gannett's attorneys' stipulations. Quod licet Jovi non licet bovi is a principle repugnant to American law.

I'm sure Jim's had advice on this aspect of Gannett's move.

We need a serious discussion about who owns the NEWS in this country.

Leaders once understood that the people needed to be informed, and since most of them were out earning a living, doing jobs that make reporters lives so much safer and easier, AP was allowed to 'form' and given tax breaks - special authority with little accountability - access to information - not for vanity's sake - for personal power, fame or wealth - but for the good of the nation.

Perhaps the less we see of Gannett (they dominate Florida political "news" - mostly DNC opinion and skewed polls - we bypassed out of necessity to get the real news to our neighbors using the net - and WE did), the better for our nation.

Here's to justice for Gannett, and AP, and co....and mainstream FR.

Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the
people...

The preservation of the means of knowledge among the lowest ranks
is of more importance to the public than all the property of all the rich
men in the country.

There is but one element of government, and that is THE PEOPLE.
From this element spring all governments. "For a nation to be free,
it is only necessary that she wills it." For a nation to be a slave, it is only
necessary that she wills it.
                                                                                           ~ John Adams

One more point, we'll have to be really vigilent now about keeping these on our own servers. They can't be denied or "disappear" later...That's why getting them saved on Fr was so important.

How odd is it to stop fame and fortune for unknown writers from obscure papers? Websites like FR have made some columnists more famous than they could ever be in this lifetime. It is more than funny to notice that several writers steal from FR posts frequently.

First off, I haven't read the whole thread (today) yet.

But it seems to me this is getting way whacked.

Like for instance, if one goes to google news and then 'views' similar articles -- and then searches on a quoted thread of words (8 or less I think), I see this here from a very benign Minnesota article. Many quotations from other news sources within the state.

Imagine world-wide.

Believe you me that I do check google news first before I visit FR - just to check the subject headings.

Regardles of personal thoughts, I really think FR is getting screwed big time. Once a news item hits the airwaves, it's up for quoting. Google News does it major league, in my opinion when they do what they do. Once there - every news faction lines up -- and they do filch stories. Just need to search on the google news a few key words, and it shows up.

Best, JLO

Jim, this is a load of crap. Why doesn't the copyright law "fair use" doctrine allow you to post and discuss any news article you want? If you need to sue on this issue, I'll do it for free. Email me.

Does a newspaper indicate on its website who owns it. I would like to check for the Gannett brand label before posting, since these oppressors won't even allow an excerpt.

That's is so disgustingly pathetic..we post a link to an article that could be deleted, altered etc..

Good thing we have geocities not-for-profit personal websites that we could use if we needed.
