Moore gets taste of own medicine; Review of "Michal Moore is a Big, Fat Stupid White Man"
Flint Journal ^ | 7-04-04 | Kim Crawford

Posted on 07/05/2004 6:25:32 AM PDT by jmstein7

Unless you've been hiding in a closet, you've probably heard about Michael Moore's record-breaking new movie "Fahrenheit 9/11," in which the gadfly producer-author says the war in Iraq is really just President Bush's war for oil and big business.

Moore, the Davison native who's become a kind of Rush Limbaugh of the Left in recent years, insists in interviews that everything in his movie is true. His critics charge the movie is propaganda.

Now, on the heels of the opening of "Fahrenheit," comes "Michael Moore Is a Big Fat Stupid White Man," a book by two of his biggest detractors, Jason Clarke and David T. Hardy. The title of this book, of course, plays off Moore's own "Stupid White Men," plus Al Franken's earlier "Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Liar."

The authors are the creators of a couple of the bigger anti-Moore Internet sites -- mooreexposed.com and moorelies.com. Moore, for the record, calls them his "wacko attackos."

"We collected more than enough evidence," Clarke and Hardy write in an open letter to Moore that serves as a kind of introduction to the book, "to prove that you are the most fictitious character of our times." (That line, of course, is a reference to Moore's statement at the March 2003 Academy Awards ceremony when he won the best documentary feature Oscar for "Bowling for Columbine." Moore, it will be recalled, called Bush "a fictitious president" who took the United States "to war for fictitious reasons.")

Hardy and Clarke call Moore's movies "crockumentaries" and characterize themselves as pointmen of a national truth squad blowing the whistle on what they say are Moore's habit of playing fast and loose with the truth in his films and books.

The co-authors and the writers of various newspaper and magazine articles that are reprinted here tick their way through "Roger & Me," "Bowling for Columbine," "Stupid White Men" and other Moore commentaries, examining his statements and show them to be oversimplifications, exaggerations or outright falsehoods. They even work in criticism of "Farhrenheit" even though the movie went into general release only on June 25.

What's their criticism of Moore's work like? Take for example "Bowling for Columbine." Clarke and Hardy charge the movie "was deliberately, seriously, and consistently deceptive." By editing the words and rearranging parts of Charleton Heston's speeches to the National Rifle Association, they say, Moore converted a "conciliatory, uniting speech" after the high school massacre into one that made the actor sound defiant and uncaring.

They point out that Moore also portrayed Heston's appearances in Denver and Flint as cold-hearted and insensitive pro-gun rallies held in the wake of the Columbine High School massacre in Colorado and the Kayla Rolland shooting by a 6-year-old classmate in February 2000.

In reality, the authors say, nothing of the kind happened. The NRA's annual meeting in Denver had been scheduled years before the Columbine shooting, and Heston's Flint visit came months after Kayla's slaying as part of that year's presidential campaign. In no way was Heston's appearance connected to the Beecher killing.

Moore chose to blame the fact that a 6-year-old boy could bring a gun to school on the welfare reform rules that forced his mother to go to work. He said nothing about the fact that boy had been raised in a family of drug dealers, the authors write.

Moore's editing and narration, they say, paints false pictures of these events and of Heston. Ultimately, they write, the movie "has less documentary value than the average Bugs Bunny cartoon."

These are tough, interesting analyses of Moore's work, executed with lots of humor of the sarcastic and ironic sort - the very weapons Moore has often employed with success. Not only his books and movies but also his political views, conspiracy theories, pronouncements and attacks on his critics are all on trial here.

Clarke and Hardy also do a bit of armchair psychoanalysis in which they frame the symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder with fitting Moore quotes. It's over the top, a kind of "revenge of the wacko attackos."

There are some Flint references here in terms of the question of Moore's hometown (Flint or Davison?) and arguments over the "facts" as presented in his first film, "Roger & Me."

This book is very much a product of the Internet, a quick read that will delight those driven to distraction by Moore. Of course, it's not likely that Moore's fans would share their enthusiasm.

Nope.

Gribble's a cartoon character -- and a joke.

'Fat Bastard,' on the other hand, is real enough -- in trumps -- is the "DemocRATS" Samuel Taylor Colleridge moment.

And is their David Duke.

And is effectively the Republican's firm [Though Jello-ish] ally.

To which happy fact such organised crime figures as Yasser Daschle and Terry McCauliffe and other criminals posing-as-congress-critters, Jim McDermott and Nancy Pelosi et al will eventually awaken.

According to some Democratic lawmakers, you aren't capable of voting this year without a United Nations monitor making sure you get it right. Nine prominent Democrats, elected members of the House of Representatives, have sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, begging him to send UN monitors to oversee the 2004 election. Florida representative Eddie Bernice Johnson led the latest effort to subvert the sovereignty of the United States and place us under the control of the increasingly-corrupt United Nations. Let me get this straight. A group of Democrats want to bring some people from countries like North Korea,...

After viewing the increasingly depressing political scene in America I am forced to conclude that the Democrats are evil and the Republicans are stupid. As Ann Coulter pointed out so well in her book "Treason", and as has been so well demonstrated by the Dems and their hand-picked appointees on the Federal Courts, their fellow-travellers in the major media and their propagandists in Hollywood, Democrats have become the party of Anti-Americanism. Even worse, they have become the party of anti-westernism. They hate the west and everything it stands for. They hate America as the end product of centuries of western...

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - State Education Secretary Richard Riordan has apologized for joking that a child's name meant "stupid dirty girl." In a videotaped exchange at the city's central library on Thursday, a girl asked Riordan if he knew that her name meant "Egyptian goddess." Riordan, who apparently believed he'd been asked what her name meant, replied, "It means stupid dirty girl." Some in the room laughed nervously, and the girl again told Riordan the meaning of her name. "Hey, that's nifty," he said.

On the posters out front, the movie is identified as ìFahrenheit 9/11.î Half the title and most of the concept were stolen without so much as a by-your-leave from the classic novel Fahrenheit 451, by the great Ray Bradbury. Here is the editorial comment Watching Michael Moore in action -- passing off manipulating facts in Bowling for Columbine, spinning statistics in Stupid White Men and Dude, Where's My Country?, shamelessly grandstanding at the Academy Awards, and epitomizing the hypocrisy he's made a king's fortune railing against -- has spurred authors David T. Hardy and Jason Clarke to take action into their own hands. In Michael Moore Is a Big Fat Stupid White Man, Hardy and Clarke dish it back hard to the fervent prophet of the far left, turning a careful eye on Moore's use...

We use passwords stupidly. I was reading an article by one of my counterparts in the computer press, describing the security measures that users should take to protect their passwords. You know the drill: use different passwords for different sites. Change them regularly. Use a letter-and-number combination, not just letters. Don't use a common word, or your own name, or any common name, because all of these things are easily guessed by hackers using automated password-guessing software. Don't write your passwords down. And I said: Who has time for all of that nonsense? I mean, I had painful and difficult...

It's a Funeral, Stupid 06/09/2004 Okay, I'm officially steamed. I can deal with all the liberals who never had a good thing to say about Ronald Reagan in his lifetime suddenly pretending to think he was an "effective leader" or whatever. Hey, maybe they're sincere, or politically calculating (certainly John Kerry's pilgrimage to Simi Valley falls under that category), or maybe they're just showing an appropriate civil grace. It doesn't matter; they're doing the right thing. I can deal with Fidel Castro's state owned radio saying, "He, who never should have been born, has died." After all, who has more...

Over the past two and a half years Berkeley, California has added radical Middle Eastern politics to its chic campus culture. The result isn't pretty. A city that prides itself on tolerance and diversity is fast-becoming an epicenter of hate. A recent article called The Berkeley Intifada in the East Bay Express is an eye-opener for those who think Berkeley is still what it was. Violently anti-Semitic vandalism and graffiti is making a comeback. "It's the Jews, stupid," was scratched into a 9/11 memorial. The glass door to Berkeley's Hillel building was shattered by a hurled cinderblock. Just in case...

Madrid suspect gave game away with stupid blunder June 10, 2004 MILAN: Rabei Osman Sayed Ahmed, the Islamic militant known to Spanish authorities as "Mohamed the Egyptian", tripped himself up with one of the oldest mistakes in the book - bragging over the telephone. Italian authorities had tapped his home phone in Milan after Ahmed - who was arrested as part of multi-city European raids on Tuesday - fled Madrid in the months before the March 11 train bombings there that killed 191 people. The 33-year-old former Taliban explosives expert is suspected of supplying the bomb-making expertise for the Madrid...

As the media continues its ìif it bleeds it leadsî bias on Iraq ñ despite tremendous positive news from that front ñ and the Presidentís poll numbers reflect that, itís hard for many conservatives to remember that iron law of politics given us twelve years ago by James Carville: Itís the economy, stupid. SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, major TV networks and financial magazines keep repeating a serious error I've meant to call them on, but haven't, because my own Web site makes the same grave mistake. To hear Big Media tell it, the U.S. economy is in a fragile state of "recovery" that threatens to be undermined at any moment, by rising interest rates, by soaring gas prices, by another terrorist attack. In fact, the economy has been in a state of rip-roaring "expansion" -- the strongest in 20 years -- yet the media persists...

The goal was the same -- break them as quickly as possible. But according to the West Michigan native who supervised interrogation at Bagram Air Base, the methods were vastly different from the alleged abuse at Abu Ghraib prison outside Baghdad. Leno may be the ratings winner. Stewart is the critics' darling. But, day in and day out, Letterman is the hands-down leader when it comes to unabashed Bush bashing. One reason is that his Late Show has the brass balls to go where the cowardly White House news corps and corporate suck-up Leno fear to tread: presenting Dubya in all his dumb-ass glory. During their workweek, executive producer Rob Burnett and his octet of writers often begin their morning by wondering, What's George W. doing today? So they glance through his schedule and look for an interesting presidential public appearance....

Many Arabs and other Muslims must have heard President George W. Bushís not-quite-contrite apology for the abuse of Iraqi prisoners, coupled with his confusing assurance that Americans really donít do that sort of thing. It must have been confusing because there are literally thousands of images demonstrating conclusively that Americans have been doing exactly that sort of thing. It was like listening to "Baghdad Bob," the former Saddam spokesperson who loudly would state as fact what everyone knew to be fiction. Perhaps some Arabs also heard the televised testimony of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who purported to accept "full responsibility"...

That's the answer. So what's the question? The question is "If gays can get married, how does that destroy my marriage or yours? How does giving rights to one group take away rights from another group?" The answer originates in the world of intellectual property, specifically trademark law. Dilution is the unauthorized use of a well-known mark that protects the distinctive quality of any word or symbol used for identification. Dilution takes two forms: blurring and tarnishment. Blurring causes the diluted mark to no longer uniquely identify its owner's goods or services. Tarnishment diminishes the quality associated with the mark....

But I was on The Radio Factor With Bill O'Reilly last week and in the intro to our discussion he referred often to The Globe and Mail as left-wing. Humility being all the rage on the Right these days, allow me to make my own contribution to the gallery of grovelers enlightened by recent turns in the War on Terror. Last month I contended in this space that even as the battle against terrorism roars on, European consensus about taking up the fight remains seriously confused. More heinously, I suggested, Europeans understate the dangers of a toxic ideology whose sweep across the globe will uproot ethnic cultures, destroy freedom and democracy, and shackle indigenous peoples in an oppressively one-sided worldview.
