CBS'S BIG BLUNDER? (Credits Free Republic)

September 10, 2004 -- THE populist revolu tion against the so- called mainstream media continues. Yesterday, the citizen journalists who produce blogs on the Internet — and their engaged readers — engaged in the wholesale exposure of what appears to be a presidential-year dirty trick against George W. Bush. What the bloggers and their audiences did was call into profound question the authenticity of four documents proudly trumpeted by CBS News in a much-heralded investigative report on Wednesday night's edition of "60 Minutes" about the president's National Guard service in the early 1970s.

These were "previously unseen documents . . . obtained by '60 Minutes,' " the network bragged Wednesday night on its Web site. Their author, supposedly, was Bush's squadron commander, Jerry Killian, who died 20 years ago.

They "include a memorandum from May 1972," CBS reports, "where Killian writes that Lt. Bush called him to talk about 'how he can get out of coming to drill from now through November.' " A document dated "18 August 1973" complains that Killian is being asked to "sugar coat" Bush's record. "I'm having trouble running interference and doing my job," the document says.

Liberals went wild with glee about the story, especially after the onslaught on John Kerry's Vietnam record by his fellow Swift-boat veterans.

Kevin Drum, the most talented of the left-wing bloggers, wrote: "This story is a perfect demonstration of the difference between the Swift-boat controversy and the National Guard controversy. Both are tales from long ago and both are related to Vietnam, but . . . in the National Guard case, practically every new piece of documentary evidence provides additional confirmation that the charges against Bush are true."

[snip]The Minneapolis lawyers who run powerlineblog.com were on the case early. Two of the blog's readers directed their attention to a note left on an Internet bulletin board on the freerepublic.com Web site, the 47th posting on the topic there. Post No. 47 pointed out that there was something off about these documents from the 1970s: The spacing between the letters and the words was proportional, and only a few IBM electric typewriters could achieve that effect back then.

I do feel genuinely sorry for the Killian family. Mother and son. How terrible, dirty feeling, to have your dead husband, an American Veteran, a Colonel, be dragged into this after his passing twenty years ago. Wrongful and totally corrupt. He was used in an horrendous way to do damage to a current President of the United States. This is more than an error, this is propaganda. Built on the hope that no one would notice the tech errors. They used this good veteran, USED HIM in a way that went against EVERYTHING he stood for as an officer in our military.

Amen - that's a part of this we need to keep in the forefront. It's plenty scuzzy enough to lie/cheat/forge to discredit the President, but lower than dirt to defecate on a good man's grave .

Isn't forging military documents a felony? ...just noticed the apostrophe in isn't doesn't curve...is this a pre 1972 software program?

I'm not sure because CBS claimed the came from Killian's personal files .. but the DOJ should look into it

His widow might have a case because though

Buckeye? Where do you think you are Michigan or was it Wisconsin?

LOL, lost my head. Actually I'm in Boston, ugh. We're not all nuts you know.

By the way, Paul Zahn is ragging on Bush's service right now on CNN, quoting Barnes.

Freepers,

Dan RATher biased and the MSM will always have to live with the memory that folks like FR took them down and exposed them for their biased reporting.

We just need to make sure that we do not become a target.

SHould not be an issue......The rules of FR seem to make sure that we post actual news stories when it comes to this stuff.

The Clintons knew exactly which news outlet to have these documents sent to -- they knew which one would rush it onto the air without checking. Just another case of the Clinton's being "Oh, so helpful," to John Kerry, IMHO...

I actually just was throwing around some silly "The Hunt For Red October" movie quotes.

[mattdono ponders cleverly].

Now that I about it, though, without those razor sharp references to an old movie, you and Buckhead wouldn't have been thinking creatively, instinctively, reacting to the environment around (both the documents and the thread with my seemingly unconnected movie quotes).

So, when you think about it, without my idiocy of quoting a movie from 1985, we may never have discovered these seemingly innocuous irregularities in the memos. What do you think about that?

No? Dang! It appears that my clever little theory has just as many holes as these documents! [wink][smile]

Seriesly though, you and Buckhead did a great job in picking it up. Much props to you both.

****Republic, that was the most heartfelt and meaningful post I have read on this thread. Very good!

Now that I about it

Should have read, "Now that I THINK about it."

Damn! I hate when that happens.

Yeah! If this brings that [characterization omitted] down, I'm going to celebrate by ordering a pizza (that's a huge celebration for yours truly). He suppressed the story of Monica's dress for what, a year? Two? And of course, the real story -- Clinton's corrupt administration -- then got suppressed in favor of lies about Ken Starr and (mostly) true but spun stories about the dress.
George W. Bush will be reelected by a margin of at least ten per cent
