September 10, 2004 -- THE populist revolu tion against the so- called mainstream media continues. Yesterday, the citizen journalists who produce blogs on the Internet — and their engaged readers — engaged in the wholesale exposure of what appears to be a presidential-year dirty trick against George W. Bush. What the bloggers and their audiences did was call into profound question the authenticity of four documents proudly trumpeted by CBS News in a much-heralded investigative report on Wednesday night's edition of "60 Minutes" about the president's National Guard service in the early 1970s.These were "previously unseen documents . . . obtained by '60 Minutes,' " the network bragged Wednesday night on its Web site. Their author, supposedly, was Bush's squadron commander, Jerry Killian, who died 20 years ago.
They "include a memorandum from May 1972," CBS reports, "where Killian writes that Lt. Bush called him to talk about 'how he can get out of coming to drill from now through November.' " A document dated "18 August 1973" complains that Killian is being asked to "sugar coat" Bush's record. "I'm having trouble running interference and doing my job," the document says.
Liberals went wild with glee about the story, especially after the onslaught on John Kerry's Vietnam record by his fellow Swift-boat veterans.
Kevin Drum, the most talented of the left-wing bloggers, wrote: "This story is a perfect demonstration of the difference between the Swift-boat controversy and the National Guard controversy. Both are tales from long ago and both are related to Vietnam, but . . . in the National Guard case, practically every new piece of documentary evidence provides additional confirmation that the charges against Bush are true."

Two of the blog's readers directed their attention to a note left on an Internet bulletin board on the freerepublic.com Web site, the 47th posting on the topic there. Post No. 47 pointed out that there was something off about these documents from the 1970s: The spacing between the letters and the words was proportional, and only a few IBM electric typewriters could achieve that effect back then.

In order to memorialize this from now on when referring to an intentional media smear it should be called a "47."
Well, it is good to see that some of the "Old Media" are fiunally catching up!

Well CBS radio news isn't giving up the ghost. I just heard their top of the hour update. They mention the outcry of forgery, but are standing behind the documents based on HANDWRITING examination. It appears the typed portion which is the big qustion just went right over their slimy heads.
This is legal stalling, that's all. Changing the subject to something more palatable for CBS. Their activity since the story broke is all about covering their you-know-whats. It's not going to work.
I also wonder if the White House (anonymously) could use FR to put ideas (like forgery) before the members to start activism? That way the WH would not look aggressive. Just a thought.

Each structure has an error correcting mechanism, but they are very different. A useful parallel is the competition between a Soviet-style economy and the US economy.
Error correction in the OM is by an editor. Most importantly, all information stays secret until the editor approves its veracity. Similarly, in a central economy, the apparatchnik (theoretically) looks at all information and then places value on every good and service, which value is then transmitted down to the peons.
In contrast to that, in an open economy the PRICE carries all the information around to all parties, and every consumer has full information instantly available to him with need of an intermediary. So, in the cybermedia, there is no editor and all information is passed around openly. Crucially, there is no NEED FOR AN EDITOR IF ERRORS HAPPEN OPENLY, and are subject to review by all players. This open process finds a way to place a value on every supposed bit of info, just like the marketplace places a price on goods and services in a free economy.
The OM keeps screaming that that the lack of an editor is the horrid weakness of the internet process. They don't understand that the lack of an editor IS the new paradigm, the lack of an editor is THE STRENGTH of the cybermedia, and that the error correction method is the OPENNESS of the process.
The loudest screamers in the OM are the folks who never understood why the Soviet economy fell.
All this means that the death of the OM is certain, just as certain as the inevitable triumph of capitalism over communism. And the left hates the New Media because it removes any need for an intermediary, which puts them out of a job.
The left will NEVER EVER start up an effective cybermedia of its own because the structural model is antithetical to the wiring of their personalities.
This is another example of why all who use Free Republic should cancel their subscriptions to their fish wraps and send the monthly savings to Free Republic.
Free Republic is an absolute nightmare and day time terror for the lying lunatic libs.
They lie, and Freepers document their lies. Now we get national coverage of our documentation.
Free Republic and the Swift Vets need our donations to get the real truth out to Americans, not the lies and spins of the mediots.

Hopefully, the widow and son of this dead gentleman will take CBS/60 Minutes and Dan Blather to civil court for damages.
