forced up into their attics to escape the floodwaters,
said state Sen. Walter Boasso, who heard from local
officials that some houses in Chalmette had water
rising beyond the second floor.
“We know people were up in the attics hollering for
help,” said Boasso, who evacuated to Baton Rouge and
was camped out at the state Office of Emergency
Preparedness. Hopefully rescue workers will be able to
get to people who are trapped before the water rises

I'm also confused.
All morning I've been hearing about breached levees and that P lake spilling over.
And yet I keep reading that NO dodged the bullet.
I am totally unfamiliar with NO. I'm not proud of that fact.
I do know about hurricanes being from Merryland and now living in Delaware.
But it sure doesn't sound like a dodged bullet to me.
Bush is going to make remarks coming off AF1 in AZ.

WIDESPREAD OVER JEFFERSON PARISH AS DANGEROUS HURRICANE KATRINA
MOVES NORTHEAST OF THE AREA. THIS IS A VERY LIFE THREATENING
SITUATION.
I used to send Box Project boxes of needed items, gifts, etc. to a black family in Itta Bena, MS, on the delta. I pray they and their descendants are okay.
St. Bernard is a parish/county located due east of the city of New Orleans.
When looking at a map of extreme southeastern Louisiana, you see two "fingers" of land that are technically peninsulas: one extending southeast, one due east.
The southeast "finger" is Plaquemines parish and is the path currently taken by the Mississippi to the Gulf; the eastern "finger", St. Bernard, is how the river used to run to the Gulf many, many moons ago.
The largest town in St. Bernard is Chalmette, my home town. Areas to the east of it are more sparsely populated, with a good portion of the parish very low-lying and, at the eastermost points, downright marshy.

"Parishes" are what Louisianaians call their counties.
We have power. The trees are a bit scary as the wind comes in bands as does the rain.
No alligators threatening us yet. Hubby is cooking mustard greens and corn bread.
