Category 4 Hurricane Katrina is approaching landfall in Eastern Louisiana. At 4:00AM EDT the storm's center was about 90 miles south of New Orleans.

The remnants of Katrina will leave New Orleans before long, and the residents will quickly notice that the temperature rises.

They're saying that power might not be restored for a month. I cannot imagine trying to live in those conditions.

And nobody has packed a hurricane kit big enough to last a month. Oh my.

The aftermath may seem worse than the storm.

For me, this is about my family, friends, places where I used to live, and people I care about. This is very high priority to me. I bet I'm not the only one.

We know all about straight line winds. One hit this lot a few years ago. I had just left the kitchen when we heard a very loud noise. We went back to the kitchen and a pine tree was through the roof even with the ceiling. I called hubby at work and told him to come home that we had a tree in the house. It got the pine tree that caused the damage and then went across the yard and got a tree on that side.

My mom loves to tell about the good ole days when she was growing up.

Cities do not sink because of the weight of new buildings. The ground does subside (sink) sometimes because the ground water is pumped to a low level for various uses such as refineries and other manufacturing. Some soils compact when they dry out. The Houston area is an example of this.

But our son has just called and thinks we can make it to Florida, skipping Biloxi. But getting thru Mobile Bay by next Monday is worrying us.

Nope, you're not.

Mom and sister live there(now in Houston). Three families(relatives) staying with us 100 miles west of Houston live there. We lived there 30 years, went to college there, grew up there.

This from staff writer Geoff Pender, who is calling in reports from Hattiesburg. If you are thinking about getting in the car and coming back to South Mississippi, don't. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is telling people who have evacuated to stay away until the roads have been cleared and the National Guard is in place. If we get word when that happens, we'll pass it along.

On a different note, we have a report that portions of U.S. 90 are under seven feet of water.

I know. I have been there, but the vast majority were leveled by the hurricane. MY point was they didn't have to worry about burying or raising thousands of homes when they raised the island.

It used to be the high spot in the marsh. You could get to the city from Bayou St. John, which early was the easier way to get boats in, or up the Missisippi, and controlled trade coming down the river...and was placed excellently for trade.

Blame Bienville. He founded it.
