"Of course insurance companies covers floods, if you have flood insurance."

I was just quoting an industry representative who was on TV. It didn't sound right.

"I have reservations in Gulf Shores for Thursday the 1st. Any word on conditions there?"

Sorry, I don't know about Gulf Shores. Maybe someone else can help.

It sounds funny but my fire insurance was cancelled when I had land movement on my property for just this reason. Lots of unscupulous individuals *do* arson their own houses after landslides and earthquakes. Unfortunate for the honest. (I spent lot of my own money to repair and sold the house, with full disclosure and at a loss, to someone with even more plans for reinforcement, which he completed.)

where are these examples of people without flood insurance, being paid off by the government? from my knowledge of it, all they do is provide low interest loans.

Hello,

We spent 8-12 through 8-19 the the Harrahs Grand Casino Hotel in Gulfport, as a "last vacation before school starts". Beautiful hotel, wonderful pool/water park with a lazy river. Spent 1 full day on Ship Island, another in the Quarter.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those that have faced this storm, and with those that will still have to deal with it.

Glad to be here, with FR Friends, MOgirl

This lack of news on Slidell is really maddening. My sister-in-law was admitted to the hospital in Slidell on Saturday. Originally she was told that the patients there would be transferred to a hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, but there was a shortage of ambulances so they were forced to stay in Slidell. I am worried about her as well as other friends there. The phone circuits are continually busy.

I'm OK; we're in Cobb Co. -- the local weather folk are saying that we'll get some severe warnings a little later on...

Of course insurance companies covers floods, if you have flood insurance. I used to live in a flood zone and made sure to have flood insurance, even for my car, and lo and behold my car was totaled after a flood and the insurance covered every dime.

Actually, if you check into it, you'll likely find that your flood insurance is actually through the National Flood Insurance Program run by FEMA.

You can tack it onto your homeowner's policy, but the premium will be the same no matter who you use and the money passes right through to the national program.

Now... you can often get ADDITIONAL coverage above that.... but that's a different topic.

At least two oil rigs were adrift in the Gulf of Mexico, where Katrina raged through offshore fields as one of the strongest hurricanes on record. Fearing the worst from the 175 mph (280 kph) winds, oil companies shut down rigs and closed refineries along the coast, sending oil futures higher.
