Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

I am just coming into this thread at this point... I literally got nauseous when I read the Drudge story about a child who probably had lost anything being separated from his pet. That's just not...American. What are they doing with those animals? I've been OK reading all the upsetting things that are happening but the idea of this little kid crying "Snowball" as they rip his pet away is making me ill.

In the meantime, I am watching the moron on MSBNC (Joe Scarb) he can't get off enough showing the chaos, the calamity, all footage that is 8 to 10 hours old.
All that continual footage of complaints of "people doing nothin'"" the NG, the mayor, where are they.... " unfortunately stops a lot of desire to help the needy and also reinforces some stereotypes. MSNBC ought to be ashamed.

KALB just interrupted programming with breaking news that three busloads of patients are en route from New Orleans to Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria. All Cabrini employees are required to report to work immediately for this emergency.

Here is a reporter in Biloxi who wasn't acting.

This is one of the most heartbreaking stories I've seen so far.

Multiple murders and multiple rapes every day in the Superdome. NOt enough National Guard to take care of incidents and still leave the doctors protected.

And those are the people headed to the Astrodome.

It's hard to comprehend, but it looks like the city officials told them to assemble there, and then just forgot about them ever since. They said they haven't seen or heard a word since they were
told to go there, and clearly no food or water drops either.

Not true. Picture of at least one drop is right here."

Right. Saw it after I posted.

Your "proof" proves that you are wrong. They were setting up a command post after 4 days in.

Throwing their kids into the water? Actually that sounds about right. Did the man say who was piloting the boats?

Ignorance and desperation does not condemn one to hell, imo...

Not to mention that the whole site will become the No. 1 Superfund Toxic Waste Site. The federal government doesn't have the money to decontaminate what had been New Orleans when the water is finally all pumped out.

That's obstructionist bulldung.
Even nuclear fallout didn't stop the Japanese from rebuilding Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The evacuation should make New Orleans' urban renewal fairly easy.
Just condemn the properties and bring in the bulldozers to scrape the slums away. You could probably use a lot of the rubble to double the width and height of the levees. Come to think of it, that would also be a good way to dispose of those huge slabs of concrete that used to be the bridge across Lake Ponchatrain!

I saw where a man rowed 18 small children out and there was no room for the mothers. He has been caring for the children since.

It must have been heart breaking to send your kids off with a stranger for survival, not knowing where they were going or who you were giving them to..

The youngest rape victim (reported) was four years old.

I don't know who I'm more incensed at, the rapist or Landrieu and Blanco.

I would be banned for life if I posted what I am thinking upon hearing this...

Prayers for ALL!
