Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

no way pop. the media is salivating for that, for Bush to federalize this and have news media video of african americans being gunned down by the US military under orders from Bush. keep the focus on Blanco.

"Hell, look at Huey Long as one example."

Huey Long's ego was one large Black Hole, but he was Albert Einstein compared to Governor Blanco.

The agency also will send six 20-person teams to help local and state public health and medical personnel.

Sure they will.

The day anybody from the Federal government puts in stitches or changes a bandage is the day pigs will fly.

I don't doubt the fed gov't is working as fast as it can, but I can't help but wish it could be faster. I know that the shear size of the storm has made the process all the more difficult, so I don't blame anyone personally.

A couple were seperated from their infant baby right as the hurricane hit. They lost contact and had no idea where the baby was. (The baby was taken to Texas.)

They where told where the baby was about an hour ago.

These people can't help it. They have been being told where to go and what to do most, if not all their lives... not all the people, but a high percentage of them. Anyone who has every been around projects (same name all around the country) knows this is true.

When you are on welfare you live your life being told by social workers what you can do...

Well, it's obviously self-serving; Detroit can't justify their massive bureacracy with a shrinking population, and the next step after resettlement would be to ask for 100 billion dollars in "aid" from the Federal Government to be funnelled through said Detroit bureacracy.

You asked me a question about the City of NOLA radio system. It was flooded out early in this hurricane, and technicians that were authorized to try to help fix it were turned away by the Louisiana State Patrol. The radios were used the first day on SIMPLEX, but could not be recharged etc. Several police precincts were underwater etc. I am sure some are still in use, but not as a citywide trunking system as designed.

Thanks for the input. I too have noticed a propensity for some to call for the bodies and body counts. Once it degenerates to the point where CNN/FOX show the infanticide live, because of the "popular demand", we shall find out who cannot be pried away from the bigscreen replays.
Decency and compassion have been tossed under the bus for ratings.

If the SuperDome is trashed, it's becasue the people who are in there trashed it.

I'm not sure I like this "here's a phone number, go get this woman" stuff on TV.

It is Bill O on now- unless I got deceived by the teasers.... could still be Shep lurking in the back with the horror stories on the dome.

I guess I'm in the minority then, I think he and all the others are totally stressed out from this reporting... I see they moved Goldblat to Houston after his nightmare last night, you could see him melting down... and they had moved him into the Quarter when they pulled Shep out and Shep started his meltdown there, too... the Quarter is more than dangerous right now and I defy any of us to go there for long and not have PTS.

I hope they are not from the convention center.

The ones at the convention center that I saw are not a problem. One lady was searching for food for diabetics and found some orange juice, one nurse picked up two elderly while she was on her way there and treated a diabetic while they were filming. They said there were some bad folks there doing bad things but not everyone there is bad. Don't condemn the whole lot who are also trapped with the bad ones.
