President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

An unidentified Air Force sergeant stands guard outside Harrah's Casino as a convoy of food and water arrives in the flooded city of New Orleans on Friday, Sept. 2, 2005. A huge military presence arrived in the city, restoring order and bringing with them food and water to feed the thousands of victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Mr. BBL knows to watch for flying objects if he turns on MSNBC or CNN when I'm in the room - especially if I see Olberman (Odorman) or Hissy Matthews!

Interesting here: (from American Daily-Dave Gibson):

The most frightening incident so far occurred Tuesday night. The Louisiana Governor's office reported that armed looters attempted to break into the Children's Hospital in New Orleans. They were no doubt searching for a stash of narcotics. The hospital held 100 children who were too sick to be evacuated before the storm. Police could not respond to the call due to high water. The hospital staff and children were left to defend themselves against the drug-crazed mob. These are not only thieves, but violent savages. A New Orleans police officer was shot in the head while attempting to stop a looter. The city's homeland security chief Terry Ebbert told the local Times-Picayune: "There are gangs of armed men moving around the city." A brief look at New Orleans reveals that this lawless behavior really should not be a big shock. The homicide rate in the 'Crescent City' is actually ten times that of the national average. There have already been 200 murders in that city this year alone. In 2004, New Orleans police and local university researchers conducted a rather disturbing and telling experiment. Police officers shot 700 blank rounds in one of the city's black crime-ridden neighborhoods. All 700 rounds were fired in one afternoon. Not one phone call was placed to 911 operators to report the gunshots! New Orleans is 67% black. Now, I am not suggesting that all blacks are criminals. However, there is a large segment of the black population who not only accept lawless behavior, but glorify it. Many blacks believe that they are somehow entitled to steal. A young black New Orleans' man named Mike Franklin justified the looting to an AP reporter by saying: "To be honest with you, people are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society." Unfortunately, that belief is all too common amongst America's black population. My brother lived in Charleston, S.C. during Hurricane Hugo. That area was hit hard by the ferocious storm. The governor at the time, issued a shoot-on-site policy for all looters. Consequently, there was no looting in the historic city. These vultures descending upon New Orleans' businesses are nothing more than useless vermin and should be dealt with as such. A shoot-to-kill order should be issued. Once a few of these thugs were blown apart--the looting would come to an abrupt end. We should all pray for the law-abiding poor victims of Hurricane Katrina. Those who could not afford to leave the city and have lost all of their meager means and even their loved-ones, are now apparently at the mercy of animalistic criminals. Two tragedies have befallen the city of New Orleans...The devastation wreaked by a storm of biblical proportion and now the devastation wreaked by human beings-turned predators.

(Sorry for the length)

Lou Dobbs is getting ticked, too... just asked his reporter on the ground why if the city is predominately black, the mayor is black and the council are black is this prejudice keeping people from being properly prepared? She kind of back-tracked in her comments after he nailed her on it...

I just sent off this email to Lou:

I've been watching coverage since last weekend. The people in charge in NOLA dropped the ball from the time they knew the hurricane was coming towards them. The first buses were loaded by police officers who were black, most of the people I see in the shelters are black -- which is understandable given the preponderance of blacks in NOLA -- so how can they say whites were evacuated vs blacks... if they are talking about the whites who heeded the call to evacuate and drove out of NOLA in their automobiles before the storm.... how is THAT George Bush's fault??

Did anyone hear that idiot on MSNBC - president of National Urban League and former mayor of New Orleans?
Of course he's blaming the federal government for everything. When asked if he had a share in the blame because he was a former mayor, he said "Absolutely not." because, he says, all NO mayors have lobbied the feds constantly to help them with the levees. Unbelievable.

This disaster has made me realize that having a liberal in charge of local government is not merely a nuisance, it can be life-threatening in the event of an emergency.

Michigan National Guardsman Chief Warrant Officer Roger Cox, of Waterford, Mich., attached to the 210th Military Police Battalion, registers vehicles at the Taylor Armory in Taylor, Mich., Friday, Sept. 2, 2005 prior to a convoy departing for Mississippi to aid in relief efforts from Hurricane Katrina. The first contingency of troops left Friday morning from Taylor to assist in the Gulf area. Other troops are gathering in Taylor and will leave for Mississippi and Louisiana on Saturday. On Thursday, Gov. Jennifer Granholm deployed 275 Michigan National Guard troops to assist in the hurricane relief effort, bringing the total to nearly 500.

ANYWHERE DEMOCRATS ARE IN CHARGE THERE IS CORRUPTION AND INCOMPETENCE!!!! THEN THE GROWNUPS HAVE TO COME IN AND CLEANUP THE MESS!"

And you can bet the farm that once the mess is cleaned up (i.e., the "heavy lifting') and the BILLIONS of dollars pour in to rebuild the city, Nagin, Blanco, et al will demand to be in charge again. They're salvating at the prospect of controlling all that money.

I agree. Speaking of schools. My students brought up the fact that many of the kids will have no records of grades and test scores...and that seniors will be screwed for college apps. We're in Miami and they drew a sigh of relief - coulda been them.

As much as I dislike Geraldo, he did make one statement has some potential:

"These men here are just back from Iraq; they are the same ones who caught Saddam Hussein."

It's a shame the looters can't hear that.

Perhaps they need to blare that from loudspeakers mounted on boats and choppers so that the bad guys hear it.

As someone said earlier today, the adults have arrived.
