I'm a Democratic-leaning independent voter that has lurked on the site for some time. Although I don't agree with the viewpoints of many here, I've learned quite a bit from the research necessary to fairly appreciate both sides of the issue. Pretty much the same reason I listen to Hannity and Rush.
I also belong to DailyKos but likewise rarely find myself in lockstep agreement with the left, either, on any issue. I'd be the first one to admit that both sides often have valid points. I just wish politicians would do a better job of acknowledging that, instead of unmercifully demonizing the other side in playing to their constituencies.
Hopefully, questions I ask along the way may enlighten other non-conservatives who occasionally browse FreeRepublic.

My suggestion is to learn how to put up your tagline and include the URL to this thread so that when someone accuses you of being a FRiberal, you can say you’ve been up front about it. Also, putting that kinda stuff on your home page would reduce the amount of revilement headed your way. Once you’re past that, you’ll find FReepers to be genuinely accepting and willing to engage in dialog.

Got stopped at drunk driving checkpoint and they asked me to open my trunk (what am I some kind of criminal?) Turns out the reg was out of date so he was snooping around.When the officer asked about the guns I told him the truth.

Unlike the treatment that conservatives get by the folks at DailyKos or Huffington, we welcome you. We will disagree with you on certain issues as you noted yourself, but hopefully, we will treat you a higher degree of respect. At the very least it won’t be profanity laced, only sarcastic.

BTW, the very fact that you are listening to those outside of the group is a good step and says much about you. I was once a Democrat and a liberal, but then educated myself as you are doing. At one point I signed as “Declined to State”. Then I realized that as in the old adage “if you stand for nothing...”, and reregistered last October as Republican. This doesn’t mean that I fully espouse or endorse all the actions of my party. I am, however, committed to steering it rather than abandoning it for a party that only makes you “feel” good, rather than having clout like being Independent (no disrespect intended).
