Israelite priests hold first gathering since Temple era

Jews belonging to the Tribe of Levi, and particularly the Kohen clan, came together for a mass gathering in Jerusalem on Sunday. It was the first large-scale gathering of biblically-mandated Israelite priests since the time of the Second Temple.

The gathering included lectures and seminars on the history and future of the Temple, and culminated with all of the participants declaring the priestly blessing over Israel from the Western Wall.

Genetic research over the past several decades has succeeded in isolating a particular DNA signature shared by all members of the Tribe of Levi, making the reinstitution of Israel's priestly caste a relatively simple endeavor once the Temple is rebuilt.

Highly unlikely. The actual Menorah was transported to Constantinople. There are credible reports of it being displayed as late as the 12th century by the Eastern Roman (i.e. "Byzantine") Empire. It vanishes around the time that Crusaders sack the city. So it probably got burned down for its gold sometime around then.

Most of the rest of the Temple treasures were probably looted and burned by the Germanic tribes that sacked Rome repeatedly.

One thing to keep in mind: if the Vatican actually had any of these treasures, don't you think they would have displayed them sometime before it became politically incorrect to do so? Wouldn't their be Churches dedicated to relics from the Temple? Wouldn't the Pope parade the Menorah around to celebrate his belief that the Church is the "true" Israel? The fact that there's no record of any of this happening suggests that the Vatican ain't got squat.

This article is one huge heaping turd of misinformation. This wasn't the first "large-scale gathering" of Cohanim (Priests) and Leviim. Every Festival, hundreds of Cohanim perform the Priestly blessing together at the Western Wall. And every MORNING of EVERY DAY, Cohanim recite the Priestly blessing during morning services in most synagogues in the world.

Also, "the reinstitution of Israel's priestly caste" isn't a " relatively simple endeavor." There's no "reinstitution" because Israel's priestly caste (the Cohanim) never vanished -- they have an unbroken line of tradition supported by recent genetic evidence going back thousands of years, and still have an active role in the day-to-day lives of Orthodox Jews.

Finally, to the chagrin of Orthodox Jews, while the genetic signature appears consistently on Cohanim and Sephardi and Mizrahi Leviim, it is not found on "all members of the Tribe of Levi" as the term is understood today -- Ashkenazi Leviim do not have the gene with any consistency.
