Military draft should be considered: US war czar Aug 10 06:00 PM US/Eastern A top US military officer in charge of coordinating the US war effort in Iraq said Friday that it makes sense to consider a return of the draft to meet the US military's needs.

Lieutenant General Douglas Lutte, who serves as White House deputy national security adviser, said the all-volunteer military is serving "exceedingly well" and the administration has not decided it needs to be replaced with a draft.

But in an interview with National Public Radio, he said, "I think it makes sense to certainly consider it, and I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table."

"But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation's security by one means or another," he said.

Oh, oh....they'll be pouring out of the AynRandfantasyworld to condemn the 'slave army's!!!'. Not that I think the draft will be reinstated.

Wonder if the good LTG wants to draft the girls too (and no, I wouldn't support that).

Why, as long as we are meeting our recruiting goals? And, we are.

I'm all for a draft.

No reason some should get to stay behind while the brave and the poor go do the fighting.

Great, just what we need, people beating war drums for a draft.

ALL military service should be voluntary.

Absolutely NOT - we don’t need a military full of people that don’t want to be there. We want a military full of people that have voluntarily joined and are willing to fight for their country and for the freedom of its’ inhabitants.

I would prefer the title of Warlord, preferably of Barsoom.

Ahhhh - NO!

1. A draft would have to include both males and females. Gays would have to be included or everybody who didn’t want to be drafted would just say they were gay.

2. The left wants a draft so bad they can just about taste it. They live for the exciting days of the 60’s. Draft riots, burning draft cards, chanting students on every college campus, nightly news coverage of police beating back rioters. Oh yeah, the left would love to bring back the draft.

I have nothing against the many draftees who would serve honorably.

I have everything against the rotten apples who would consume their leaders time with BS.

I oppose a draft for the usual reasons. But it would almost be worth it to see the punk Lefties come face to face with reality. A decision they would have to make with real consequences. So sweet to see them hauled off to prison.

After 23 Years in the USAF and on the way to retirement.. This needs a confirmation

We DO NOT need military people who did not want to join in the first place.. Its hard enough training the ones who do volunteer in todays climate.

Any General who thinks we need a draft in the war situation we have now is a idiot or playing to a socialist agenda.

You know, that question crossed my mind when Rangel was talking about a draft. Guys still get their Selective Service card when they turn 18...now that there are women in the military, I was wondering if someone would cry "discrimination" if a draft was reinstated.

I wondered if they made any reference to females and Selective Service, so I went to the SSS website and found this interesting little note to immigrants

ATTENTION, UNDOCUMENTED MALES & IMMIGRANT SERVICING GROUPS!

If you are a man ages 18 through 25 and living in the U.S., then you must register with Selective Service. It’s the law. You can register at any U.S. Post Office and do not need a social security number. When you do obtain a social security number, let Selective Service know. Provide a copy of your new social security number card; being sure to include your complete name, date of birth, Selective Service registration number, and current mailing address; and mail to the Selective Service System, P.O. Box 94636, Palatine, IL 60094-4636.

Be sure to register before your 26th birthday. After that, it’s too late!

Selective Service does not collect any information which would indicate whether or not you are undocumented. You want to protect yourself for future U.S. citizenship and other government benefits and programs by registering with Selective Service. Do it today.

A draft is not going to happen.

First, you would have to solve the problem of who gets drafted, and by that I mean do you draft females, students, people with children, people with minor justice system problems, people with low IQ’s (what we used to call “Cat 2, Cat 3” etc. There are pro and con positions on all those groups/situations and this is not 1969, so the same rules would not apply.

Secondly, even if a draft happened Saturday morning, the facilities and the support/training structure no longer exist to any large extent. It would take months, even in the face of a national emergency. It is not good to contemplate the time it would take to train troops. Registration for 18 year-old males may make some people feel better, but it means largely nothing.

On a personal note, having served, I would not want to serve with anyone who was conscripted.

How many times I gotta say it? The Reagan era buildup proved that we can a military twice the size of today’s without a draft. You’d think these guys with stars on their shoulders would be aware of this.

Fine, consider it, carefully. In most cases, it should be dismissed. In some limited cases, you could make an argument for it.
