IT’s really not a problem alarm rider. You did precisely what they did during the fifties. No deferments this time...and we know Mitt and Rudy and etc.

How is conscription not slavery? You seem to have a problem with intellectual honesty.

You could really screw the left up if you had a draft with an option for either civil or military service. That way the lefties could opt for civil service and get an idea of what communism is about as they work in the blazing sun for the good of the state.

We were not fighting a war then, and the sons were raised primarily by WWII fathers. Different demographic; many many first generation Americans who won’t be signing up for the Army...and really it is the Army we are talking about.

Cripplecreek's got dibs on "Warlord." I just wasn't fast enough. Dang it.
Could I maybe resurrect "Scourge of God"?
To: mdefranc
Because you have the option of refusing to serve. In slavery, they kill you, or at least that is my understanding. Conscripts are also free to leave the country and renounce your citizenship; also not an option for slaves.

Heck of a choice. It’s still slavery, plain and simple. If a draft rolls around, I should be able to say “No” with no financial or social consequences from the government.

You’re in the wrong forum,bud.
To: arderkrag
Well, in a perfect world I suppose, but you face the same choice as regards taxation. One can join another branch of the service if they don't like the Army. Every major war we have fought and won against large effective competent militaries we have done with an army that was partially conscripted. They were good soldiers. If we ever fight an enemy like that again, conscription will happen or we will be defeated.

No it shouldn’t. We do not need a draft. The army already has enough problems with young recruits thinking the US Army is a social welfare program.

With smoke and mirrors. Changing (lowering) standards. Like drug conviction. Like sex conviction. Like education waiver.
A friend of mine volunteered for the draft in 1965 and retired 37 years later as a 3 star.
Draftees served in Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.
So don’t let anybody tell you draftees can’t be good soldiers.
To: MSF BU
Yeh, sure. Reagan proved those ideas wrong every way they possibly could be proven wrong. An all-volunteer military should always be our policy. You can’t compromise on these things and call yourself a conservative.

...you’re in a country that owes its existence to army’s that were often conscripted; and they were very good forces that always ended up winning the ground war. Like it or not.

"Ahhhh - NO!
1. A draft would have to include both males and females."
That's not true and is not the way the established system will work. I'm in favor of law that would put a trial battalion of combat lines of chicks into a real fight to disprove amazonian feminism idiocy, though.
"Gays would have to be included or everybody who didnt want to be drafted would just say they were gay."
That problem has been foreseen and taken care of in planning and military law. Homosexual acts (and more) and harrassment are illegal and are punished.
"2. The left wants a draft so bad they can just about taste it. They live for the exciting days of the 60s. Draft riots, burning draft cards, chanting students on every college campus, nightly news coverage of police beating back rioters. Oh yeah, the left would love to bring back the draft."
That will be irrelevant after Iran builds nuclear weapons and the events that will follow.

My son is in charge of the DI's at the MCRD in San Diego. He said that 5% to 7% of the volunteers are physically unfit to the point that they have to let them go.
That said, a draft would probably have at least 25% physically unfit. Too many DUers sit in mommy's basement eating pizza.

"After 23 Years in the USAF and on the way to retirement.. This needs a confirmation We DO NOT need military people who did not want to join in the first place.. Its hard enough training the ones who do volunteer in todays climate." After 20 years in the USAF and retired, I think all those who enjoy the benefits of the sacrifices our military has made need to make a contribution to their country. I'd prefer it be military service but I understand the realities of contemporary cowardice prevalent in our country today. Having said that, I'd tell all of the able bodied American men who pat service members on the back to step up, serve your country and give our guys currently serving some relief. If you really believe in the WOT, join it. We have enough cheerleaders!

I don’t know much of this Lutte, but to me, anybody giving interviews to NPR is suspect.. and then to knowingly float the draft idea is just giving the ravenous left more fodder to spin. It’s like Newt calling the war “phony” even if he supposedly had some other obscure meaning in mind.. ripe for misquoting and using against us.

I dont think a draft is a good idea.
However, being the father of two girls—and no boys, I think the girls should be in line and serve. I have always felt that there should be NO exemptions—except if you were in ROTC or couldn’t serve (mental and medical conditions.) There is no reason if you are going to draft Johnny, you can draft Janey and put her in the stateside jobs that allow you to ship Johnny overseas.
The problem is that when it comes to this stuff, people are not using their imagination, nor are they being creative.
