The only suspense in Barack Obama's Democratic Party primary win in Mississippi last week was how much he'd win by. Anything less than double digits could be interpreted as something of a moral victory for his rival for the presidential nomination, Hillary Clinton.
"Moral victories" are useless in politics, but they are a straw to grasp at if you are the Clinton campaign struggling towards the next primary, in Pennsylvania, which is six weeks away.
So with Obama winning Ole Miss 61 per cent to 37 per cent - a 24-point spread - well, it could be called a demoralizing loss for Clinton, even though the Mississippi win means only a net gain of maybe 10 delegates for Obama.
More bad news for Clinton is that she also lost one "superdelegate" who had pledged to her: ex-governor of New York Eliot Spitzer, whose name was obliterated from Clinton's list of delegate supporters seconds after his hasty press conference deploring his inability to keep his fly zipped up when tempted by pricey prostitutes.
Spitzer is neither the first nor last politician to self-destruct in this way, as Clinton should know, since her experience as a wronged wife is more extensive than any other public figure's spouse. Pity she can't use this experience as a credential, but maybe she will as her campaign continues to flounder.
A sign of the rampant desperation - and the try-anything syndrome to get Obama to unravel - might be Clinton supporter and one-time vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro's comment that "if Obama was a white man, he'd not be in this position [of leading the Democratic race for president]."
The irony (as well as truth) of her observation is that had Ferraro not been an affirmative action woman, she'd not have been the Democratic choice for vice-president in 1984, when Walter Mondale challenged Ronald Reagan.
Though she didn't say it, her remark could also apply to Clinton, who'd not be running for president today had she not been President Bill Clinton's wife and First Lady.
Obama refused to take the bait, saying Ferraro's remarks were "patently absurd" and that his appeal reached to all Americans. The Clinton campaign then accused him of bringing "race" into the campaign, which again shows the flailing and desperation of the Clinton camp.
In the category of political correctness gone berserk, Republican Congressman Steve King of Iowa drew outrage for expressing the opinion, probably correctly, that al-Qaida, misinterpreting the effect of Obama's Muslim father and middle name, would be "dancing in the streets" if Obama were elected. Crazy times.
What the Mississippi results indicate is that "race" is increasingly surfacing in Democratic ranks. Exit polls showed 90 per cent of Mississippi blacks voting for Obama, 75 per cent of white women going for Clinton.
Clinton's only chance of being the candidate now seems to be if she wins the popular vote, since there's no way she can catch up in delegates. As-yet-uncommitted "superdelegates" could conceivably opt for Clinton if she leads in the popular vote - but that's unlikely because African-American voters in the U.S. would be so offended they'd boycott the Democrats and go to Republican John McCain.
With 10 primaries left until the convention, and no primaries until Pennsylvania, the infighting between the Clinton and Obama camps is destined to get ugly in a country where ugly campaigns are not unknown.
Obama, like McCain, has largely maintained a civilized demeanour, but such niceties are unlikely to restrain the Clintons.
Knuckle-dusters, false accusations and dirty tricks lie ahead.
I got the brats warming up and the Lager cooling down for the final innings of this little slug-fest.

Yes, eventually the teeth take on the appearance of popcorn. Brush and floss regularly!
Hillary is holding her punches, defending Obama on the Wright thing. Why? Because she figures she’s gotta put him on her ticket if she wins, and she doesn’t want him to be too beat up.
Either that, or she wants him to pick her for his ticket.
It’s not that ugly. It’s turning into a lovefest.
Boil the brats in some lower grade beer, and enjoy!
No sane person would pick her for VP. There’s no way Bill’s big mouth could be contained.
This is wrong. There are two months between the Dem convention and the election. That is a long time in politics. If Hillary legitimately wins the nomination, African-American voters will go in and vote for her. If Hillary steals the nomination, she will make it up to them by promising all sorts of goodies and will buy the African-American vote. So African-American voters will go in and vote for her.
But as things stand now they will never vote Republican. That is pure, unadulterated wishful thinking.
I’ve noticed the clinton machine and its surrogates are keeping quiet about the anti-white “minister.” They have noticed talk radio driving the recent criticism and want to be able to blame Republicans for Hussein’s trouble in case HILLARY! can wrestle the nomination away. They need to have some way to make blacks come out to vote in November. If blacks realize the clintons really hate blacks, they’ll only show up in 60% numbers - she needs 90+%.
“Expect the Obama-Clinton showdown to get ugly”
To get ugly?
The brass knuckles and clubs are already in use. obama has about a dozen hillary knives stuck in his back. hillary Stalin has the label “racist” nailed to her forehead.
I can’t wait for the “to get ugly.”
It’s going to happen. Howard Dean will insist.
Lets hope this fight continues getting uglier so they beat each other up senseless.
Expect it? To *get* ugly?!? Heh... this nomination fight has been ugly from the beginning, and it is only going to get uglier, until the kumbaya moment after the nominee has been named.
