Dalton Minimum Returns
Is a new Dalton Minimum approaching?

The Copenhagen Choo-Choo

by Baron Bodissey

Copenhagen Choo-Choo
As everyone who is not a hermit or in solitary confinement already knows, the past few days have witnessed the Great Hope and Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen. Following the usual playbook for such international confabs, a gaggle of anti-globalists, communists, and hard-core anarchists showed up in force to block the streets, break windows, and fight with the police.

The Copenhagen cops employed somewhat different tactics this time when dealing with the troublemakers. Our Danish correspondent Kepiblanc sends this brief report:

As you probably know by now, there’s some sort of UN stunt going on in Copenhagen these days. Such events always attract all sorts of strange people, and this one is no different.

Aside from dignitaries like Mr. Mugabe, Mr. Gha-Daffy, Mr. Adolfinadinnerjacket, and your own Mr. Hussein Oh-Bama, a lot of the usual suspects from the looniesphere have shown up here. Most of them are harmless, naïve fools who like to go picketing and demonstrating against one thing and another, no matter what.

But the ‘international riot crowd’ showed up in force as well. You know, the ‘youths’ who excel in burning cars, smashing windows, throwing cobblestones and Molotov cocktails and one thing and another. In short: behaving, generally…
- - - - - - - - -
Normally, rioting and burning a city just leads to the usual chain of events: street havoc and battles with the local cops, followed by whining and legislation about ‘police brutality’. And that’s it, onward to the next city…

Not so this time. When they started throwing fireworks and bricks around, the Danish police acted differently. They immediately surrounded the youths with wagons and cut them off from both ends of a major street.

Then they handcuffed each and every one and placed them in a position where unable to move: the so-called ‘choo-choo train’. After spending four hours sitting on the asphalt, peeing in their pants and screaming — well, not so much about ‘global warming’ (it’s below zero Celsius here) — they were transferred to open cages — Gitmo style — for the night.

So now the ‘youths’ can return to whence they came and tell everyone about the global warming and hot air in Carbonhagen…

Climate conference taking a heavy toll on the environment

Copenhagen – Hypocrisy – Fraud – Confidence Trick

The Great (Global Warming) Hoax

Deprogramming Yourself After Global Warming Scam

Confronting your own false beliefs can be a daunting task, even more so when coupled with an overwhelming level of corruption in the world around you, steering you the wrong way. Coming to grips with the latter can end your days of innocence about mass media and politics.

For years now, people around the world have been pummeled with false information about global warming. Politicians and special interest groups have issued “dire warnings.” Al Gore predicts deadly weather. Government reports, United Nations committees, Oscar award, Nobel Peace prizes, and what about that supposed “scientific consensus” all pointing to catastrophic climate change caused by human activity?

People have a need to make logical sense of the world around them. And for the uninitiated, such long term pressure to accept the global warming hoax as “truth” doesn't seem to make sense unless it is true. In the absence of knowledge, it is easy to naturally sense, as some of us put it, that repetition must equal truth – a kind of assessment process based on statistical consensus. The more you hear a thing, the more it seems to be supported. If a majority believes it, then it is more likely to be true than if it is a minority opinion.

Big Lie politics includes typical patterns of behavior. One very good way to help make sense of this world, to understand and protect yourself against it in the future, is to become familiar with common propaganda techniques. Study the common techniques defined below and see how many you recognize in catastrophic, man-made global warming propaganda.

Propaganda Techniques (Source: Wikipedia, December 16, 2009)

Common media for transmitting propaganda messages include news reports, government reports, books, leaflets, movies, radio, television, and posters. In the case of radio and television, propaganda can exist on news, current-affairs or talk-show segments, as advertising or public-service announce "spots" or as long-running advertorials. Propaganda campaigns often follow a strategic transmission pattern to indoctrinate the target group. This may begin with a simple transmission such as a leaflet dropped from a plane or an advertisement. Generally these messages will contain directions on how to obtain more information, via a web site, hot line, radio program, et cetera (as it is seen also for selling purposes among other goals). The strategy intends to initiate the individual from information recipient to information seeker through reinforcement, and then from information seeker to opinion leader through indoctrination.

A number of techniques based in social psychological research are used to generate propaganda. Many of these same techniques can be found under logical fallacies, since propagandists use arguments that, while sometimes convincing, are not necessarily valid.

Some time has been spent analyzing the means by which propaganda messages are transmitted. That work is important but it is clear that information dissemination strategies only become propaganda strategies when coupled with propagandistic messages. Identifying these messages is a necessary prerequisite to study the methods by which those messages are spread. Below are a number of techniques for generating propaganda: "The Pope is Antichrist" - 1521 propaganda print by Lucas Cranach the Elder, commissioned by Martin Luther.

* Ad hominem

A Latin phrase which has come to mean attacking your opponent, as opposed to attacking their arguments.

* Ad nauseam

This argument approach uses tireless repetition of an idea. An idea, especially a simple slogan, that is repeated enough times, may begin to be taken as the truth. This approach works best when media sources are limited and controlled by the propagator.

* Appeal to authority

Appeals to authority cite prominent figures to support a position, idea, argument, or course of action.

* Appeal to fear

Appeals to fear seek to build support by instilling anxieties and panic in the general population, for example, Joseph Goebbels exploited Theodore Kaufman's Germany Must Perish! to claim that the Allies sought the extermination of the German people.

* Appeal to prejudice

Using loaded or emotive terms to attach value or moral goodness to believing the proposition. For example, the phrase: "Any hard-working taxpayer would have to agree that those who do not work, and who do not support the community do not deserve the community's support through social assistance."

* Bandwagon

Bandwagon and "inevitable-victory" appeals attempt to persuade the target audience to join in and take the course of action that "everyone else is taking."

* Inevitable victory: invites those not already on the bandwagon to join those already on the road to certain victory. Those already or at least partially on the bandwagon are reassured that staying aboard is their best course of action. * Join the crowd: This technique reinforces people's natural desire to be on the winning side. This technique is used to convince the audience that a program is an expression of an irresistible mass movement and that it is in their best interest to join.

* Black-and-White fallacy

Presenting only two choices, with the product or idea being propagated as the better choice. (e.g., "You are either with us, or you are with the enemy")

* Beautiful people

The type of propaganda that deals with famous people or depicts attractive, happy people. This makes other people think that if they buy a product or follow a certain ideology, they too will be happy or successful. (This is more used in advertising for products, instead of political reasons)

* Big Lie

The repeated articulation of a complex of events that justify subsequent action. The descriptions of these events have elements of truth, and the "big lie" generalizations merge and eventually supplant the public's accurate perception of the underlying events. After World War I the German Stab in the back explanation of the cause of their defeat became a justification for Nazi re-militarization and revanchist aggression.

* Common man

The "'plain folks'" or "common man" approach attempts to convince the audience that the propagandist's positions reflect the common sense of the people. It is designed to win the confidence of the audience by communicating in the common manner and style of the target audience. Propagandists use ordinary language and mannerisms (and clothe their message in face-to-face and audiovisual communications) in attempting to identify their point of view with that of the average person. For example, a propaganda leaflet may make an argument on a macroeconomic issue, such as unemployment insurance benefits, using everyday terms: "given that the country has little money during this recession, we should stop paying unemployment benefits to those who do not work, because that is like maxing out all your credit cards during a tight period, when you should be tightening your belt."

* Demonizing the enemy

Making individuals from the opposing nation, from a different ethnic group, or those who support the opposing viewpoint appear to be subhuman (e.g., the Vietnam War-era term "gooks" for National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam aka Vietcong, (or 'VC') soldiers), worthless, or immoral, through suggestion or false accusations.

World War I poster by Winsor McCay, urging Americans to buy Liberty Bonds

* Direct order

This technique hopes to simplify the decision making process by using images and words to tell the audience exactly what actions to take, eliminating any other possible choices. Authority figures can be used to give the order, overlapping it with the Appeal to authority technique, but not necessarily. The Uncle Sam "I want you" image is an example of this technique.

* Euphoria

The use of an event that generates euphoria or happiness, or using an appealing event to boost morale. Euphoria can be created by declaring a holiday, making luxury items available, or mounting a military parade with marching bands and patriotic messages.

* Disinformation

The creation or deletion of information from public records, in the purpose of making a false record of an event or the actions of a person or organization, including outright forgery of photographs, motion pictures, broadcasts, and sound recordings as well as printed documents.

* Flag-waving

An attempt to justify an action on the grounds that doing so will make one more patriotic, or in some way benefit a group, country, or idea. The feeling of patriotism which this technique attempts to inspire may not necessarily diminish or entirely omit one's capability for rational examination of the matter in question.

The Finnish Maiden - personification of Finnish nationalism

* Glittering generalities

Glittering generalities are emotionally appealing words applied to a product or idea, but which present no concrete argument or analysis. A famous example is the campaign slogan "Ford has a better idea!"

* Half-truth

A half-truth is a deceptive statement which may come in several forms and includes some element of truth. The statement might be partly true, the statement may be totally true but only part of the whole truth, or it may utilize some deceptive element, such as improper punctuation, or double meaning, especially if the intent is to deceive, evade blame or misrepresent the truth.

* Intentional vagueness

Generalities are deliberately vague so that the audience may supply its own interpretations. The intention is to move the audience by use of undefined phrases, without analyzing their validity or attempting to determine their reasonableness or application. The intent is to cause people to draw their own interpretations rather than simply being presented with an explicit idea. In trying to "figure out" the propaganda, the audience forgoes judgment of the ideas presented. Their validity, reasonableness and application may still be considered.

* Obtain disapproval or Reductio ad Hitlerum

This technique is used to persuade a target audience to disapprove of an action or idea by suggesting that the idea is popular with groups hated, feared, or held in contempt by the target audience. Thus if a group which supports a certain policy is led to believe that undesirable, subversive, or contemptible people support the same policy, then the members of the group may decide to change their original position. This is a form of bad logic, where a is said to equal X, and b is said to equal X, therefore, a = b.

* Oversimplification

Favorable generalities are used to provide simple answers to complex social, political, economic, or military problems.

* Quotes out of Context

Selective editing of quotes which can change meanings. Political documentaries designed to discredit an opponent or an opposing political viewpoint often make use of this technique.

* Name-calling

Propagandists use the name-calling technique to incite fears and arouse prejudices in their hearers in the intent that the bad names will cause hearers to construct a negative opinion about a group or set of beliefs or ideas that the propagandist would wish hearers to denounce. The method is intended to provoke conclusions about a matter apart from impartial examinations of facts. Name-calling is thus a substitute for rational, fact-based arguments against the an idea or belief on its own merits.[1]

* Rationalization

Individuals or groups may use favorable generalities to rationalize questionable acts or beliefs. Vague and pleasant phrases are often used to justify such actions or beliefs.

* Red herring

Presenting data or issues that, while compelling, are irrelevant to the argument at hand, and then claiming that it validates the argument.

* Labeling

A Euphemism is used when the propagandist attempts to increase the perceived quality, credibility, or credence of a particular ideal. A Dysphemism is used when the intent of the propagandist is to discredit, diminish the perceived quality, or hurt the perceived righteousness of the Mark. By creating a 'label' or 'category' or 'faction' of a population, it is much easier to make an example of these larger bodies, because they can uplift or defame the Mark without actually incurring legal-defamation. Example: "Liberal" is a dysphamsim intended to diminish the perceived credibility of a particular Mark. By taking a displeasing argument presented by a Mark, the propagandist can quote that person, and then attack 'liberals' in an attempt to both (1) create a political battle-ax of unaccountable aggression and (2) diminish the quality of the Mark. If the propagandist uses the label on too-many perceivably credible individuals, muddying up the word can be done by broadcasting bad-examples of 'liberals' into the media. Labeling can be thought of as a sub-set of Guilt by association, another Logical Fallacy.

* Repetition

This type of propaganda deals with a jingle or word that is repeated over and over again, thus getting it stuck in someones head, so they can buy the product. The "Repetition" method has been described previously.

* Slogans

A slogan is a brief, striking phrase that may include labeling and stereotyping. Although slogans may be enlisted to support reasoned ideas, in practice they tend to act only as emotional appeals. Opponents of the US's invasion and occupation of Iraq use the slogan "blood for oil" to suggest that the invasion and its human losses was done to access Iraq's oil riches. On the other hand, "hawks" who argue that the US should continue to fight in Iraq use the slogan "cut and run" to suggest that it would be cowardly or weak to withdraw from Iraq. Similarly, the names of the military campaigns, such as "enduring freedom" or "just cause", may also be regarded to be slogans, devised to influence people.

* Stereotyping or Name Calling or Labeling

This technique attempts to arouse prejudices in an audience by labeling the object of the propaganda campaign as something the target audience fears, hates, loathes, or finds undesirable. For instance, reporting on a foreign country or social group may focus on the stereotypical traits that the reader expects, even though they are far from being representative of the whole country or group; such reporting often focuses on the anecdotal.

* Testimonial

Testimonials are quotations, in or out of context, especially cited to support or reject a given policy, action, program, or personality. The reputation or the role (expert, respected public figure, etc.) of the individual giving the statement is exploited. The testimonial places the official sanction of a respected person or authority on a propaganda message. This is done in an effort to cause the target audience to identify itself with the authority or to accept the authority's opinions and beliefs as its own. See also, damaging quotation

* Transfer

Also known as Association, this is a technique of projecting positive or negative qualities (praise or blame) of a person, entity, object, or value (an individual, group, organization, nation, patriotism, etc.) to another to make the second more acceptable or to discredit it. It evokes an emotional response, which stimulates the target to identify with recognized authorities. Often highly visual, this technique often utilizes symbols (for example, the Swastika used in Nazi Germany, originally a symbol for health and prosperity) superimposed over other visual images. An example of common use of this technique in America is for the President's image to be overlaid with a swastika by his opponents.

* Unstated assumption

This technique is used when the propaganda concept that the propagandist intends to transmit would seem less credible if explicitly stated. The concept is instead repeatedly assumed or implied.

* Virtue words

These are words in the value system of the target audience which tend to produce a positive image when attached to a person or issue. Peace, happiness, security, wise leadership, freedom, "The Truth", etc. are virtue words. In countries such as the U.S. religiosity is seen as a virtue, making associations to this quality affectively beneficial.

Mysterious Group Buys Building Next to Ground Zero For Mosque

This from the NYT on Dec. 8:

Muslim Prayers Fuel Spiritual Rebuilding Project by Ground Zero - NYTimes.com

The building has no sign that hints at its use as a Muslim prayer space, but these modest beginnings point to a far grander vision: an Islamic center near the city’s most hallowed piece of land that would stand as one of ground zero’s more unexpected and striking neighbors.

The location was precisely a key selling point for the group of Muslims who bought the building in July. A presence so close to the World Trade Center, “where a piece of the wreckage fell,” said Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the cleric leading the project, “sends the opposite statement to what happened on 9/11.”

“We want to push back against the extremists,” added Imam Feisal, 61.

Public gasps at Lake Michigan wind farm images

Since I've inadvertently posted the wind farm in Denmark, I suppose it's only appropriate to also mention:
There is no evidence that industrial wind power is likely to have a significant impact on carbon emissions. The European experience is instructive. Denmark, the world’s most wind-intensive nation, with more than 6,000 turbines generating 19% of its electricity, has yet to close a single fossil-fuel plant. It requires 50% more coal-generated electricity to cover wind power’s unpredictability, and pollution and carbon dioxide emissions have risen (by 36% in 2006 alone). Flemming Nissen, the head of development at West Danish generating company ELSAM (one of Denmark’s largest energy utilities) tells us that “wind turbines do not reduce carbon dioxide emissions.” The German experience is no different. Der Spiegel reports that “Germany’s CO2 emissions haven’t been reduced by even a single gram,” and additional coal- and gas-fired plants have been constructed to ensure reliable delivery. Indeed, recent academic research shows that wind power may actually increase greenhouse gas emissions in some cases, depending on the carbon-intensity of back-up generation required because of its intermittent character. On the negative side of the environmental ledger are adverse impacts of industrial wind turbines on birdlife and other forms of wildlife, farm animals, wetlands and viewsheds. Industrial wind power is not a viable economic alternative to other energy conservation options. Again, the Danish experience is instructive. Its electricity generation costs are the highest in Europe (15¢/kwh compared to Ontario’s current rate of about 6¢). Niels Gram of the Danish Federation of Industries says, “windmills are a mistake and economically make no sense.” Aase Madsen , the Chair of Energy Policy in the Danish Parliament, calls it “a terribly expensive disaster.”

Climate Change Activists Shout Down Cavuto's Guest and Throw Object at Him During Interview - Video

The Sound Of All Hell Breaking Loose, Pt. 14

The bottle genie works its magic;

A Compas poll, carried out Nov. 28 and released last week, showed -- remarkably -- that among Canadians with an opinion on a Copenhagen treaty, 73 per cent favoured postponing a decision or not signing on at all.

Respondents' reasons related to concern about economic recovery following the recession as well as lack of confidence in the science behind climate change. That confidence has been shaken of late by a controversy over manipulation of data at a British research institute. It's noteworthy that Conservatives have not suffered any significant drop in poll numbers as a result of their cautious approach on climate change.

And that, despite a full court press by an ideologically invested Canadian mainstream news media to ignore, spin and dismiss the content of the released documents.

Climate activists also experienced a setback last week when the Calgary-based Canada West Foundation warned that a national unity crisis could result from letting the West bear the brunt of greenhouse-gas emission cuts.

The warning came in response to a document released last October by the David Suzuki Foundation and the Pembina Institute. Climate Leadership, Economic Prosperity asserted Canada's economy could handle significant emissions cuts, with most damage confined to Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The two environmental groups had hoped the document would convince people the task at hand is doable. Instead it pulled the curtain on simmering tensions in the federation.

Suzuki, Pembina, the CBC, and other leftist dinosaurs in media share common traits - they understand even less about average Canadians than they do the environment, and at their core, care little for either.

It's the Marxism, stupid.

Are the mainstream media capable of surviving their sidelining of the number one global scoop? Are they finally committing suicide? Are they, in fact, any longer mainstream? Every historian knows that any significant trend in society will show warning symptoms over a long period; but the final catastrophe will usually be triggered by a single event. For the moribund MSM that decisive blunder may well be Climategate.

Another feature of any doomed institution is that it signals its imminent demise by behaving in a manner that is contrary to its nature and purpose. Every city in the developed world contains news rooms in which cringing journalists struggle to satisfy the imperative demands of editors for a scoop. Yet the obvious scoop – the BIG ONE of journalistic mythology – is consigned to the waste basket. This is the journalism of Isvestia and Pravda, with all the commercial viability that attached to that school of news reporting.

And like all Marxists, they'd run the planet like they run their conferences.

"People around the world [are] actually expecting something to be done from us,” red-faced Danish Prime Minister Lars Rasmussen lectured delegates from nearly 200 nations.

Burden of Proof. It's pushback time .
I've just been watching this video, of Lord Monkton laying into the Climategate gang. What makes it so potent is that he is quite bluntly calling them crooks, and calling anyone who still follows their fraudulent prophecies dupes and fools. He names names, and crimes. Yes, crimes. And yes, criminals. Criminals with names. Monkton does all this in his posh British public school voice. Nevertheless, you can almost see him doing that thing that fist fighters do, but with their beckoning hands rather than with their mouths, and pointing at their own chins. Come and get me! Give me your best shot! I say you are a pack of scoundrels. Prove me wrong! I say that the logical thing to do about "climate change" is: nothing. Nothing. Why on earth do you still have the damned nerve to think anything else? Such pugilistic vulgarities are not to be found in the text of the talk. Monkton is too canny, too cool, to get that excited. But that is the subtext.
Here is some other evidence that those with the job of chasing crooks are now getting interested in this.

The Fearmongerer in Chief warned today that unless the democrats pass their nationalized health care boondoggle this year the US will go bankrupt.
ABC has the video.

President Obama told ABC News’ Charles Gibson in an interview that if Congress does not pass health care legislation that will bring down costs, the federal government “will go bankrupt.”

The president laid out a dire scenario of what will happen if his health care reform effort fails.

“If we don’t pass it, here’s the guarantee….your premiums will go up, your employers are going to load up more costs on you,” he said. “Potentially they’re going to drop your coverage, because they just can’t afford an increase of 25 percent, 30 percent in terms of the costs of providing health care to employees each and every year. “

Actually, the truth is that the US will go bankrupt if Obama and democrats keep tripling the national deficit every year like they did last year.

Obama increased the national debt to $12 Trillion.
And he nearly doubled the unemployment rate since Bush was in charge with his failed Stimulus Plan.

Earlier this week Obama said Republicans “need to stop trying to frighten the American people.”

Good News: Copenhagen Climate Summit Is Pretty Much A Disaster

—DrewM.

Lots of rioting lefties, pissed off third world 'leaders' not happy with how their extortion attempts are going and the French are whining.

Seriously, does it get any better than this?

“Collapsing in chaos” is a phrase the media is using to describe the Copenhagen climate conference, and that certainly is the feeling among many here at the Bella Center....

Substantively, it looks as though little has been accomplished towards binding emissions targets to replace the expiring provisions in the existing Kyoto Protocol. The reason is simple - reducing carbon dioxide emissions is prohibitively expensive. The citizens of none of the 192 nations represented here really want this done to them. Certainly not Americans, whose concern for global warming is plummeting while concern for the economy and jobs remains high. Not the Europeans whose words are rarely backed up by actions- many have not reduced their emissions under Kyoto yet are asking for tougher targets here. And not developing nations who insist on being exempted from any binding targets while demanding aid packages in the hundreds of billions annually, well above anything the developed world is willing to offer.

France's ambassador to this Rogue's Gallery is learning the same lesson a lot of liberals here in the US are...Obama may talk their language but He's not willing to put Himself on the line.

In an interview, Brice Lalonde said the progress of negotiations is "not good," and complained that the U.S. has been too "defensive" throughout the summit. While praising the Obama administration's moves to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, he criticized the U.S. for not coming to the summit with a long-term proposal for financing efforts in the developing world to fight climate change.

..."Some door has to be opened on long-term financing, and it has to be opened here," Mr. Lalonde said. He conceded that the Obama administration's negotiating position is constrained by the U.S. Senate's decision to delay action on climate legislation until next spring. But he said, "we all have problems with our senates and parliaments."

"We understand [President Obama] has a smart tactic, which is to never hassle the Congress," Mr. Lalonde said. "But he must nevertheless speak to the American people. He must convince them that [passing climate legislation] is important."

In fairness, I'm sure Obama would love to transfer large amounts of wealth to the rest of the world. The problem is, He maybe a God but He's not a king and He needs the Senate to act. Turns out many senators are only willing to commit political suicide once and they are going with health care not climate change.

Still, Obama is scheduled to show up at the circus on Friday so there's still a chance He'll screw things up but let's be honest, his track record in Copenhagen isn't that great.

Somewhat related, House Democrats are beginning to notice their colleagues in the other body are hanging them out to dry.

"Grew up in Zimbabwe, parents lost all to that racist thug Mugabe, so when I heard he was at the conference I couldn't believe it. The whole damn thing is a complete and utter farce. Of course not one newspaper will put on the front page that Mugabe is attending. We have to find that fact out in the opinion columns. Everything Kate has said about the MSM these past few weeks has been 100% true!"

Checking the weather in Copenhagen it looks like it'll be snowing Thursday & Friday.

The Politico and Roger Simon (who is in Copenhagen) depict a scene of chaos and division that the management can do little to hide. Politico hints that some politicians are beginning to sense that the heretofore unsinkable ship is down by bow and foundering and are, with stealthy tread, making for the First-Class lifeboats.

in a surprise move that captured growing uncertainty over conference — Denmark’s climate minister, Connie Hedegaard, stepped aside as president of the conference, handing the gavel to Rasmussen, as head of the host country.

Outside, Danish police — who have been accused of heavy-handedness by human rights groups — clashed with thousands of environmental activists who descended on the complex from a nearby train station and demanded entry to the Bella Center.

BBC video showed truncheon-bearing Danish police shoving the crowd backward as protesters gasped and covered their faces to avoid breathing tear gas.

Inside the building, U.N. officials revoked the credentials of about 100 accredited members of the green group Friends of the Earth for staging a series of small protests on Tuesday.

The dynamics of this crisis may be simple. A series of events, notably the Climategate revelations to which the cold snap in Britain has added psychological credence, has shifted a significant amount of public opinion to skepticism. But the real damage is being inflicted by the environmental left. They had been bought off by political promises which were barely capable of fulfillment when the tide of public opinion had not yet been turned. With the public increasingly skeptical, the environmental Left rightly sees that it has no chance of getting what it wants. Whenever the Left doesn’t get what it wants it does what comes naturally: it becomes more militant.  Roger Simon relates a telling anecdote of streets crowded by hangers-on and empty power lunches. Oops, did I say power?

The problem's not the banks

When he met Monday with the CEOs of the nation's largest banks, President Obama's message was simple: We gave to you, now you give to us. That assumes that a lack of bank lending is holding back the economy, undermining job creation.

Nothing could be further from the truth. It is the president's own policies that are holding back the economy.

The Climate Change Conference from Hell

Let's see now...

Over in Copenhagen, we have Robert Mugabe, perhaps the most brutal and corrupt despot in Africa, whose life's work has been to destroy the once-prosperous country of Zimbabwe, lecturing the West on the "hypocrisy" of its position on climate change. (Zimbabwe doesn't have to worry about greenhouse gas emissions, because, thanks to Mugane, its economy is in a state of collapse.)

We have the government of China, which won't allow its citizens free access to the Internet, complaining that the climate summit is "not transparent."

We have Hugo Chavez, who took time off from shutting down Venezuela's radio stations to fly to Denmark, complaining about western "dictatorship." (If anyone back in Venezuela disagrees, he'll toss them in jail).

We have "climate change activists" cutting down and desecrating the Canadian flag. More "activists" disrupting the talks and trying to break into the conference centre, beaten off by police in riot gear using tear gas and pepper spray.

.... We have Al Gore, he of the energy-sucking mansion and private jets, who charges $1,200 a handshake to be fawned over by fans, announcing that new hot-off-the-presses data show the Arctic ice cap will be fully melted in seven years, the only problem being that it's not true.

All this so countries like Canada can pony up something in the range of $100 billion for a climate fund, to be dispursed to people like Mugabe, so they can use it to pad their foreign bank accounts "adapt" their nations to climate change.

Remind me again why I want nothing to do with these clowns and their farce of an international climate crisis, and why I have no faith whatsoever in their ability to mount a credible emisions plan...

No, wait ... nevermind. I remember!

As Copenhagen Falls Apart Filmmaker Phelim McAleer Asks The Tough Questions & Gets Assaulted

Journalist and filmmaker Phelim McAleer, the maker of Not Evil, Just Wrong, has been doing a standup job of showing the hypocrisy inherent in not only the man-made global warming schizo's but the left side of the aisle as a whole. Here he is questioning the hypocrisy of those "representatives" to the Copenhagen climate change conference who have belittled and shamed people about the effects of flying a plane.

Funny how the dismiss McAleer as not worth their trouble. How dare he question them on their "green" credentials. Right?

The U.N. estimates 40,500 tons of carbon dioxide will be pumped into the atmosphere during the 12-day conference - 90 percent of it from flights. The rest comes from waste and electricity related to transport to and from the conference center and lodging in and around the Danish city.

Most of the leaders were flying either on commercial airlines or government-owned jets and Sweden was one of the few to announce plans to offset those aviation emissions - something it does routinely. Most are doing nothing to boost their green credentials and some saw no reason to treat their trip to the U.N. climate talks any differently.

And today on Neil Cavuto the filmmaker was assaulted on live tv today by those oh so tolerant lefties, and Neil rightly points out that you see none of this from the right side of the aisle:

Nopenhagen: China Says No Chance of Accord

—Ace

Yes, I am currently praising Russians for hacking and leaking files that prove Anglo-American lies, and China for refusing to sign agreements with us.

Oh, and also France, for defending capitalism against socialist assault.

China has told participants in the UN climate change talks that it sees no possibility of achieving an operational accord this week, an official involved in the Copenhagen talks says.

...

The official, who asked not to be identified, says China is instead suggesting issuing "a short political declaration of some sort", but it is not clear what that will say.

My suggestion: "Global warming is so bad bad bad bad we really have to sit down and think about how bad bad bad bad bad it is, at least for a good five or six years."

...

Earlier Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said it was possible that there would be progress on other issues such as emission cuts during the next day or so.

"I have a sense that as more heads of government arrive here in Copenhagen, that we will make some more progress. But can I just say, as I said yesterday, success at this Copenhagen conference is by no means guaranteed," he said.

That's what I've generally found in my short career in politics -- the more parties you have at the table, the easier it is to reach fundamental agreement on important issues. (The politics of website management I mean -- no, I'm sure not runnin' for nothin'.)

Yup, that is what I've found.

Meanwhile US President Barack Obama has called for an "operational accord" - essentially a political agreement with teeth that can get countries working to cut or curb their greenhouse gas emissions while a more formal and binding treaty is hammered out in 2010.

"Agreement with teeth." But not an actual "formal and binding treaty."

I have usually thought a treaty or contract was, in fact, an "agreement with teeth," and anything short of that was "just horeshittin' around," but I see now Captain Wonderful has discovered a non-binding binding non-treaty treaty.

Sen. Tom Coburn: "The Health Bill Is Scary"

I recently suggested that seniors will die sooner if Congress actually implements the Medicare cuts in the health-care bill put forward by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. My colleagues who defend the bill—none of whom have practiced medicine—predictably dismissed my concern as a scare tactic. They are wrong. Every American, not just seniors, should know that the rationing provisions in the Reid bill will not only reduce their quality of life, but their life spans as well.

My 25 years as a practicing physician have shown me what happens when government attempts to practice medicine: Doctors respond to government coercion instead of patient cues, and patients die prematurely. Even if the public option is eliminated from the bill, these onerous rationing provisions will remain intact.

Circle of friends The importance of other people in our preparedness plans

OBAMAGEDDON! NBC-WSJ POLL: TEA PARTY MORE POPULAR THAN DEMOCRATS OR REPUBLICANS.

Just how angry is the public with the country’s two leading political parties? Angry enough that the conservative, libertarian-leaning Tea Party movement is more popular than either the Democratic or the Republican parties, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

The Republican Party maintains its net-negative favorable/unfavorable rating in the poll, with 28 percent viewing it positively and 43 percent seeing it in a negative light.

For the first time in more than two years, the Democratic Party also now holds a net-negative fav/unfav, at 35-45 percent.

By comparison, the NBC/WSJ poll shows the Tea Party movement with a net-positive 41-23 percent score.

Well, Tea Partiers haven’t screwed anyone over, you know.

2010 could be the year of the “angry white male.” I dunno, the Tea Party movement is more popular than Democrats or Republicans, and there seem to be a lot of angry females at those Tea Party protests. And not all of them are white. . . Why The Health Care Polls Are Tanking.

Americans still hate Obama’s plan to bring Gitmo prisoners to U.S. “In the new survey, 64 percent say they oppose bringing Guantanamo inmates here, while 30 percent support it. The president doesn’t even have a majority of his own party on his side.

THE PRESS AND TIGER WOODS: “We were all had.” Sure. Just like with John Edwards. I don’t believe that nobody in the press knew any of this stuff. I think they just didn’t go there because it didn’t advance the preferred narrative.

How long before we hear “we were all had” about Barack Obama? When it becomes unmistakable that the narrative was a lie, I’d guess.

The Inevitable “Two Black Role Models Fall From Grace” Post. “Not by me. By an über liberal feminist blogger at HuffPo . . . I’m content saying Tiger threw it all away because of personal demons he needs to address, and Obama is throwing it all away because he seems to believe his own BS. The only thing they have in common is …. nothing that has anything to do with their race.” Rightwingsparkle has some similar thoughts.

"Tiger earned it all on his own. Putting (getting the ball in the hole) doesn't lie. He needed to perform and he did. (Suddenly all kinds of possibilites for jokes have popped into my head.)

Obama, on the other hand, is in a completely different category. He's an example of a second order Peter Principle. Not only did he rise to a position for which he was not qualified, he rose at least one level above that. And it was mainly due to white guilt..."

Greenwald grows weary with Obama apologists

—Purple Avenger

Ouch. No spiffy gift DVD sets for you this year Glenn.

...It's also worth noting how completely antithetical claims are advanced to defend and excuse Obama. We've long heard -- from the most blindly loyal cheerleaders and from Emanuel himself -- that progressives should place their trust in the Obama White House to get this done the right way, that he's playing 11-dimensional chess when everyone else is playing checkers, that Obama is the Long Game Master who will always win. Then, when a bad bill is produced, the exact opposite claim is hauled out: it's not his fault because he's totally powerless, has nothing to do with this, and couldn't possibly have altered the outcome. From his defenders, he's instantaneously transformed from 11-dimensional chess Master to impotent, victimized bystander.

The supreme goal is to shield him from all blame. What gets said to accomplish that goal can -- and does -- radically change from day to day...

FWIW, the above Greenwald slam against the O-bots was posted as an update to the original piece, so many may have not seen it unless they came back and revisited the piece.

The behavior Greenwald describes in those last two sentences is very characteristic of a narcissist's groupies. Their idol simply can do no wrong. Failures are ALWAYS someone else's fault.

Lord Monckton - manhandled;

Outside, in the real world, it was snowing, and a foretaste of the Brave New World being cooked up by “world leaders” in their fantasy-land was already evident. Some 20,000 observers from non-governmental organizations – nearly all of them true-believing Green groups funded by taxpayers – had been accredited to the conference.

However, without warning the UN had capriciously decided that all but 300 of them were to be excluded from the conference today, and all but 90 would be excluded on the final day.

Of course, this being the inept UN, no one had bothered to notify those of the NGOs that were not true-believers in the UN’s camp. So Senator Steve Fielding of Australia and I turned up with a few dozen other delegates, to be left standing in the cold for a couple of hours while the UN laboriously worked out what to do with us.

In the end, they decided to turn us away, which they did with an ill grace and in a bad-tempered manner. As soon as the decision was final, the Danish police moved in. One of them began the now familiar technique of manhandling me, in the same fashion as one of his colleagues had done the previous day.

Once again, conscious that a police helicopter with a high-resolution camera was hovering overhead, I thrust my hands into my pockets in accordance with the St. John Ambulance crowd-control training, looked my assailant in the eye and told him, quietly but firmly, to take his hands off me.

He complied, but then decided to have another go. I told him a second time, and he let go a second time. I turned to go and, after I had turned my back, he gave me a mighty shove that flung me to the ground and knocked me out.

I came to some time later (not sure exactly how long), to find my head being cradled by my friends, some of whom were doing their best to keep the police thugs at bay while the volunteer ambulance-men attended to me.

[...]

It is exactly this species of tyranny that the UN would like to impose upon the entire planet, in the name of saving us from ourselves – or, as Ugo Chavez would put it, saving us from Western capitalist democracy.

Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) — World leaders flying into Copenhagen today to discuss a solution to global warming will first face freezing weather as a blizzard dumped 10 centimeters (4 inches) of snow on the Danish capital overnight.

“Temperatures will stay low at least the next three days,” Henning Gisseloe, an official at Denmark’s Meteorological Institute, said today by telephone, forecasting more snow in coming days. “There’s a good chance of a white Christmas.”

Nancy Pelosi’s 160 thousand dollar trip…

by savage ( 178 Comments › )
Filed under Communism, Democratic Party, Global Warming Hoax, Progressives, Weather at December 17th, 2009 - 7:00 pm

Yes, that’s right, you heard it. $160,000. That is what it is going to cost us to fly that hag and her Communist delegation round trip from Andrews AFB to Copenhagen, Denmark for that global warming farce, powergrab and all around bullshit idea.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is leading a large delegation on at least two Air Force jets to Copenhagen for the climate summit — where participants harshly condemn the use of jet airplanes for the high amounts of CO2 they emit.

“This may be the largest congressional delegation I have ever heard of,” said a source at the 89th Air Wing stationed at Andrews Air Force Base of the trip to the UN summit, which is increasingly being criticized as a farce.

Using her authority as speaker, Pelosi reserved at least two jets based at Andrews AFB to fly her and her delegation to Denmark for the final days of the two-week conference.

Two jets, she says. Oh, not so fast!

But Republicans on Capitol Hill and the 89th Air Wing source said Pelosi actually reserved five planes to carry a delegation that includes as many as 24 Democrats and six Republicans.

At a time when Democrats are grappling with a host of major issues from health-care reform to the financial crisis, Pelosi planned yesterday to clip short the workweek to make the climate summit.

“Climate change is a religion for them, so there was no way they were going to miss this,” said one top GOP aide. “This is their Hajj.”

A Democratic source insisted that the delegation would be using just two planes but would not specify further.

Gotta bring along all the family members too, don’t ya know?

While the final manifest remained in flux late yesterday, it was said to include more than two dozen members of Congress, several spouses and committee staffers.

Rep. Charles Rangel (D-Harlem) was among those planning to go because of his duties as chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee, a staffer told The Post.

“We all know that Charlie Rangel is a big fan of subsidizing his vacation with taxpayer money, but the truly offensive aspect of this is Nancy Pelosi’s decision to bring the corrupt Harlem Democrat along for the ride,” said Republican spokesman Ken Spain.

San Fran Nan can’t go via commercial jet? Why the fuck not?

The 89th Air Wing’s biggest planes are the military versions of the Boeing 757 and the Boeing 737.

The 757 carries 45 passengers and costs more than $10,000 per hour to fly, according to Air Force figures.

The roundtrip cost to Copenhagen and back for the C-32A would cost taxpayers $160,000.

The 737 carries 26 passengers and costs about $7,500 per hour of flight time, bringing the costs of a Copenhagen jaunt to $120,000.

The smaller Gulfstreams hold 12 passengers apiece, but only the Gulfstream V has the range to reach Copenhagen from Washington without refueling. It costs more than $4,300 per hour to fly, bringing that taxpayer tab to more than $68,000 for a weekend in Copenhagen.

These figures do not include the cost of keeping the planes and flight crews on the ground in Copenhagen.

We are getting effed in the arse every effing day by these Democrats. Damn pieces of stuff, every one of them.

This is the sixth time I’ve reported on the annual U.N. climate change conference and the script has not changed.”

SO MANY DESPOTS, SO LITTLE TIME: Roger Simon reports from Copenhagen. “I kept thinking of Marx’s famous rewrite of Hegel – the one about history being replayed the first time as tragedy and the second time as farce. I don’t know about tragedy, but there certainly was plenty of farce to go around – demonstrators dressed as clowns, middle-aged Brazilian ladies in tiger suits and Amazonian false breasts promising to save the rain forests, an old guy from Estonia pushing a model elephant he had constructed entirely of recycled trash. These were Norman Mailer’s Armies of the Night gone globalist and, boy, did they appear useless. What will they all do when it’s over and they have to go home?”

Why does Sarah Palin Scare the living Daylights out of the Left?

Our Doctor, the Government

Forget the public option, abortion and all the other divisive questions in the health-care debate: The most important issue for patients and their doctors is the transfer of decision-making power from bedside to the federal government.

The bill that Sen. Harry Reid aims to pass in the Senate would mandate that every American enroll in a "qualified" insurance plan. And page 149 states that "qualified" health plans can do business only with a doctor who "implements such mechanisms to improve health-care quality as the secretary [of Health and Human Services] may by regulation require."

But "mechanisms to improve health-care quality" covers everything in medicine.

- What is not widely known is that China is using our (USA’s) latest technology ... clean coal technology. It’s a shame that 60-80% of the new technology comes from the US, but is deployed commercially in China, India, Europe

A good solid B+
The Republican Study Committee looks at the 2009 Obama disaster in their latest video:

A $787 billion stimulus package, $3.6 trillion budget, $200 billion cap-and-trade plan, $1.5 trillion health care plan. And 10% unemployment is the reality of President Obama’s job-killing agenda.

Related… Let Freedom Ring interviewed Republican great Thad McCotter yesterday.

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: The Long March From California To Copenhagen.
"On the National Scene

This California model is important because Obama is adopting it as a blueprint on a national scale. If he wins (and don’t count him out), life really would be more patterned on an equality of result. New payroll, income, state, local, and health care surcharge taxes would hit those over $200K with about a 70% take of one’s income. The public sector employees double in number, unionize, and demand ever more from “them.” Cap-and-trade charges raise  monthly utility bills 20%. Things like SUVs, Winnebagos, and private jet travel are taxed out of reach — except for a guardian class that uses public moneys for a rarefied lifestyle of governance and enforcement (sort of like the jets parked on the tarmac at Copenhagen or Barack’s night out on the Big Apple).

We would all want a job at the DMV but would never want to go there for any service — a model for health care to come.  In short, the poor get a little better off, the better-off a lot worse, and America becomes a sort of collective lower middle class at about  a 1950s lifestyle, praised and congratulated for ending “poverty.”"

"A worthy analysis Dr. Hanson. Indeed, one can sum up the difference in political philosophy in several ways. Liberals believe in equality of outcome; conservatives believe in equality of opportunity. Liberals believe in big government, conservatives in small. Perhaps the discussion might benefit from the perspective of human nature."

Hopenhagen Celebrates Earth Hour with City Leaders at COP15

Mayors join forces with citizens of Hopenhagen to push for global deal

COPENHAGEN, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ — Citizens of Hopenhagen gathered in City Hall Square with Mayors from around the world to mark WWF’s Earth Hour Hopenhagen in a show of support for reaching a global deal on climate change.

As the lights were switched off, West Wing actor Bradley Whitford made a moving declaration of hope to the assembled crowd: "On behalf of my children and my children’s children, I hope our leaders have the imagination and vision to face the issue of a lifetime."

While politicians struggled to reach agreement at the UN Conference outside of town, city leaders, NGOs and ordinary citizens were busy recording messages of hope, united in a mood of optimism that the will of the people would prevail. The number of citizens of Hopenhagen is now 6 million, showing how the campaign has captured people’s imaginations. "People’s ambassador" David Kroodsma spoke of the honour and privilege of representing citizens of Hopenhagen and called on political leaders to seize the moment.

"We are grateful to all the citizen’s of the world who have reached out to their leaders and made their voices heard. They have truly embraced the idea behind Hopenhagen," said Seth Farbman, Managing Director of OgilvyEarth. OgilvyEarth and Ogilvy & Mather created the Hopenhagen campaign in support of the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Junk Science Meltdown–
British climate researchers from Hadley were accused of ignoring the temperature data from Russian weather stations which did not support anthropogenic global warming.
Update: Russia Today TV is now reporting on the controversy:

melting
James Delingpole at The Telegraph reported today that the Russians are accusing British scientists of manipulating global warming data.

Climategate just got much, much bigger. And all thanks to the Russians who, with perfect timing, dropped this bombshell just as the world’s leaders are gathering in Copenhagen to discuss ways of carbon-taxing us all back to the dark ages.

Feast your eyes on this news release from Rionovosta, via the Ria Novosti agency, posted on Icecap. (Hat Tip: Richard North)

A discussion of the November 2009 Climatic Research Unit e-mail hacking incident, referred to by some sources as “Climategate,” continues against the backdrop of the abortive UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen (COP15) discussing alternative agreements to replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol that aimed to combat global warming.

The incident involved an e-mail server used by the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, East England. Unknown persons stole and anonymously disseminated thousands of e-mails and other documents dealing with the global-warming issue made over the course of 13 years.

Controversy arose after various allegations were made including that climate scientists colluded to withhold scientific evidence and manipulated data to make the case for global warming appear stronger than it is.

Climategate has already affected Russia. On Tuesday, the Moscow-based Institute of Economic Analysis (IEA) issued a report claiming that the Hadley Center for Climate Change based at the headquarters of the British Meteorological Office in Exeter (Devon, England) had probably tampered with Russian-climate data.

The IEA believes that Russian meteorological-station data did not substantiate the anthropogenic global-warming theory. Analysts say Russian meteorological stations cover most of the country’s territory, and that the Hadley Center had used data submitted by only 25% of such stations in its reports. Over 40% of Russian territory was not included in global-temperature calculations for some other reasons, rather than the lack of meteorological stations and observations.

The data of stations located in areas not listed in the Hadley Climate Research Unit Temperature UK (HadCRUT) survey often does not show any substantial warming in the late 20th century and the early 21st century.

Pravda has more on the manipulated data.

Lead Story

Another sneaky Saturday in the Senate — and Teddy K’s ghost rises again

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 19, 2009 01:14 AM

Remember the last time Harry Reid was presiding over a sneaky holiday weekend on the Senate floor?

Yep. Right before Thanksgiving. November 21. It was “Cash for Cloture” day for Sen. Mary Landrieu, who secured a $300 million payoff to give the majority the required 60 votes for cloture on a Demcare bill…that has been replaced with another bill that the American public STILL HAS NOT SEEN.

Well, the word on the Hill as of late Friday night/early Saturday morning is that Dirty Harry has made “real progress” in “talks” with Democrat holdout Sen. Ben Nelson over abortion — and over his payoff.

Via AP:

In a statement issued late Friday night, Reid says he intends to unveil final revisions to the measure on Saturday and is confident they will prevail. Nelson also said real progress had been made but said there was nothing final. Nelson has been seeking greater restrictions on abortions as well as more money for his home state in last-minute talks.

“Blank check” indeed. Leave your bets on the final dollar amount.

Making an even greater joke of transparency, Reid will unveil his massive manager’s amendment and the CBO scoring of this legislative mystery meat on Saturday morning after the 7:30am Eastern defense authorization bill vote.

Yep. Around 7:30am Eastern on the Saturday before Christmas. When normal people are making breakfast for the kids, wrapping last-minute presents, cleaning their houses for out-of-town guests, or still sleeping.

Who conducts business this way?

Only people with something to hide.

Only furtive power brokers doing everything in their power to avoid full, public scrutiny and an open, deliberative process.

Welcome to another sneaky Saturday in the Senate brought to you by the Democrat culture of corruption.

Now, make sure to take time out of your busy Saturday before Christmas and burn up the Capitol switchboard (202-224-3121) with a clarion message for your Senators:

No. Hell no.

Say it louder and often. Spread the word. Sound the alarm. They are pretending not to hear you yet.

A cry of defiance, and not of fear,
A voice in the darkness, a knock at the door,
And a word that shall echo for evermore!

***

More details of the Nelson negotiations from the LA Times:

Nelson, who has been pushing for tougher restrictions on federal funding for abortion, emerged from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s office just after 9:30 p.m. following talks with Reid and Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), a leading supporter of abortion rights.

Nelson provided few details about the negotiations. It’s “one of those situations where it’s probably best for everybody to sleep on it tonight and talk again tomorrow,” he said.

Boxer, who came out later, was more upbeat. “I’m optimistic that we can get 60 votes,” she said.

And from the WaPo:

Nelson told reporters late Friday that he remained dissatisfied with abortion-related language in the $848 billion bill. But he is also seeking changes to benefit his home state while easing the bill’s burden on factions of the health-care industry, including home health-care services and health-insurance providers.

“We’re working on a lot of things,” Nelson said during a break in the talks. “Whether we’ve decided anything or not, the answer is probably not.”

***

Desperate times for desperate Demcare demagogues call for desperate measures. Time to drag out Teddy Kennedy again!

The moment Ted Kennedy would not want to lose

My late husband, Ted Kennedy, was passionate about health-care reform. It was the cause of his life. He believed that health care for all our citizens was a fundamental right, not a privilege, and that this year the stars — and competing interests — were finally aligned to allow our nation to move forward with fundamental reform. He believed that health-care reform was essential to the financial stability of our nation’s working families and of our economy as a whole.

Still, Ted knew that accomplishing reform would be difficult. If it were easy, he told me, it would have been done a long time ago. He predicted that as the Senate got closer to a vote, compromises would be necessary, coalitions would falter and many ardent supporters of reform would want to walk away. He hoped that they wouldn’t do so. He knew from experience, he told me, that this kind of opportunity to enact health-care reform wouldn’t arise again for a generation.

Former GWB senior advisor Karl Rove: The Zero™ is no B+ President

by Bob in Breckenridge ( 114 Comments › )
Filed under Barack Obama, Democratic Party, Leftists, Progressives at December 18th, 2009 - 4:00 pm

The conceit of this moronic Marxist, The Zero™, is breathtaking. Obama and the libtards have been nothing short of a dangerous, utter failure from day one.

From bankrupting our country by putting us trillions of dollars into debt that us, our kids and grandkids will have to somehow repay, to spending $24,000 to purchase each $4000 “cash for clunkers” vehicle, to spending about $250,000 for each “new” job created or saved (whatever the hell a “saved” job is or means). B+??? GMAFB!!! An “F” (for failure) to too high a grade for this idiot Obama.

From Wednesday’s Wall Street Journal-

The President Is No B+ President;
In fact, he’s got the worst ratings of any president at the end of his first year.

Barack Obama has won a place in history with the worst ratings of any president at the end of his first year: 49% approve and 46% disapprove of his job performance in the latest USA Today/Gallup Poll.

There are many factors that explain it, including weakness abroad, an unprecedented spending binge at home, and making a perfectly awful health-care plan his signature domestic initiative. But something else is happening.

Mr. Obama has not governed as the centrist, deficit-fighting, bipartisan consensus builder he promised to be. And his promise to embody a new kind of politics—free of finger-pointing, pettiness and spin—was a mirage. He has cheapened his office with needless attacks on his predecessor.

Consider Mr. Obama’s comment in his interview this past Sunday on CBS’s “60 Minutes” that the Bush administration made a mistake in speaking in “a triumphant sense about war.”

This was a slap at every president who rallied the nation in dark moments, including Franklin D. Roosevelt (”With confidence in our armed forcMr. Obama continued distorting the record in his “60 Minutes” interview Sunday when he blamed bankers for the financial crisis. They “caused the problem,” he insisted before complaining, “I haven’t seen a lot of shame on their part” and pledging to put “a regulatory system in place that prevents them from putting us in this kind of pickle again.”

[...]

Mr. Obama may actually believe it when he says, “I think that’s a pretty darned good outcome” and congratulates himself that he could succeed where “seven presidents have tried . . . [and] seven presidents have failed.”

But voters seem to have a different definition of success. And they are tiring of the president’s blame shifting and distortions.

Read the whole op-ed here

Like a kid who’s never had to pull his own economic weight, never had a real job, never balanced a budget, "

"...he is unbelievably ignorant but I have also become convinced that he is doing a lot this purposely. He is aware that he is making the economy worse and he just keeps plowing forward. I think it goes back to his basic hatred of America."

Artist Daryl Vocat wrote in today to demand that his images be removed from this blog. The images were uploaded in the Fistgate IX posting on Wednesday.
The drawings can be seen here at Vocat’s website.

Vocat’s work was published in the book Revolutionary Voices edited by Amy Sonnie and promoted by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) to children. GLSEN was, of course, founded by Barack Obama’s Safe Schools Czar Kevin Jennings.

The artist obviously has no problem with children viewing the images but is upset that they were posted here for criticism without his permission.
I have taken the images down.

With time for an agreement running short, His Eloquency brings all his prodigious diplomatic skills to bear...

UK diplomatic sources confirmed there had been a major setback after China took huge offence at remarks by President Obama over the need to independently monitor every country carbon emissions.

In his speech President Obama said: "Without any accountability, any agreement would be empty words on a page" - remarks the Chinese interpreted as an attempt to humiliate them, prompting Prime Minister Wen Jiabao to return to his hotel.

It looks like they've finally settled on who best to blame -

"We've done what we can here," a senior White House official in Copenhagen, Denmark, tells ABC News. "The Chinese are dug in on transparency and are refusing to let people know they're living up to their end of the agreement."

Andy Revkin is there on the ground and finally placing the word "Copenhagen" in its proper context;

Copenhagen insanity: Floods of reporters sprinting in opposite directions chasing rumors of Obama or UNFCCC press conference.

Whoops, maybe no presser after all...

1935 First bit of excitement here for a few hours. A rumour swept through the media centre that Mr Obama was going to give a press conference and almost immediately hundreds of journalists rushed through the Bella Centre into the main auditorium used for such events. Some 400 reporters and TV crews packed into the room but after about ten minutes two harassed Danish officals managed to get into the room to explain that no Obama press conference had been scheduled. Dozens of journalists left the room. Most stayed, just in case.

Oh dear.

Chaos at Copenhagen: Let it snow!

Who’s in the mood for some Dean Martin? The Copenhagen debacle has me singing, “Let It Snow:”

President Obama delivered a stinker of speech — yawn — panned by his former Euro-groupies whose Obama-philia has chilled considerably. Obama managed to cobble a “feeble” agreement that he is, of course, calling “unprecedented.”

Obama leaves the snow-covered Copenhagen summit just in time to catch the East Coast blizzard.

Congressman Bob Barr wrote to me, and asked if I would back him up if he started “an inquiry in to drafting letters of impeachment,” and my reply was along the lines of

Apparently, “everyone” knew about Tiger Woods’ affairs and his behavior off the course, but the MSM narrative was that Woods “is a hero” and the Woods brand was something the MSM protected at all costs — refusing to write negative stories about him, or tell the truth about any of his shennanigans. “Everyone” knew Woods was up to the things he got up to, but the MSM would not talk about it.

Copenhagen: Blizzards, walk-outs, frustration – Good News

Disaster averted

There has been no breakthrough at Copenhagen.

Barak Obama has spoken, and the crowd was disappointed. He was visibly angry.

China and India have walked out. The West did not offer enough.

The departure of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was a major snub for the Western congregation, and guarantees that nothing binding or significant will arise out of Copenhagen. The walkout was exactly what they vowed to do in to the strategic plan they announced a few weeks ago.

The draft treaty has become the Copenhagen Accord, and deadlines have been dropped or postponed.

 More »

Meanwhile The Al Gore effect has hit Copenhagen in the bluntest of ironies. Temperatures got down to minus 4, the city has been covered with a layer of snow 10 centimeters (4 inches) thick, and people are talking about the first white Christmas there in 14 years.

The Copenhagen Post declared: “Bitter cold and steady snowfall has paralyzed the country’s roads and public transport since yesterday, and the icy cold weather is expected to get even worse over the next couple days.”

It’s almost enough to make me believe there is a God.

UPDATE 1: Ironies pile on ironies.

The Al Gore effect blizzards that currently rage were predicted using solar activity a month ago and almost to the day by Piers Corbyn. They said then that Dec 14-16/17 would be particularly snowy with biting cold winds in the region. See the press release from WeatherAction. Their Solar Weather Technique depends on solar-particle and magnetic effects and has nothing to do with CO2. (Thanks Mohib :-) )

So the tribal gurus of warming are being buried under snow that was predicted by solar long range forecasters a month ago.

UPDATE 2: Last Ditch Attempt to Revive Talks
Obama and Wen held talks today and achieved little. (So Wen’s walkout may have been a negotiating ploy?) But they will meet again this afternoon. These are the two big giants in the room. If they both moved, then things might take off. But since Obama offered little in his formal speech, it’s not clear he can offer Wen a lot more behind the scenes. But who knows?

Wen also met with Singh (India) today and announced they are wary of a deal. However, there is also talk of a spillover into Saturday (on the last line of that page).

Remember, trillions of dollars is resting on this. Very big strings are being pulled... it’s not over yet.

UPDATE 3

Myron Ebell reports that there are a lot of very put-out greenies in Copenhagen, and that there is a fissure developing between the bureaucrats and their grass roots supporters. [Fox]

• You have failed to secure the border and turn off the Mexican welfare magnet.
• You have failed to call Islamic tyranny for what it is and take the gloves off in the fight against it. Political correctness and your cowardice will kill us all.
• You have failed to call treason and traitors by their proper names – and then do something about it.
• You have failed to reign in the pervasive corruption that has come to dominate our political and civil processes. Rather, you have ignored it, excused it and reveled in it.
• You have failed to exercise fiscal prudence.
• You have consistently failed to support and promote true conservatives; you have instead supported ‘moderates’ and other liberal losers. Do the names Dede Scozzafava and Lindsey Graham ring a bell?
• Worst of all, you have failed to stand for the first principles of freedom as they were articulated by our Founding Fathers. That is unforgiveable; it is an evil from which all else has followed.

So, not a dime, not a dollar or a vote from me. I’m not going to contribute to a gutless party that won’t stand up for its own principles, principles that it has so clearly abandoned. The Republican party of today is NOT my Republican party. No courage. No principles. No clear and articulate defense of life and liberty.

The Tea Party movement and Sarah Palin are leading us back in the right direction. If you can’t help, if you won’t support real conservatives and the first principles of liberty, then I strongly suggest that you get the hell out of the way.

I’ll vote for, write in and support real conservatives. I’ll support and participate in the Tea Party movement. I’ll back Sarah Palin - and anyone like her – to the hilt. The rest of you spineless bastards can go to hell.

OUR ANGRY PRESIDENT: “Does it concern anyone else that anger is the only emotion that President Obama has displayed in public over the last month? . . . . How does someone so ‘cool’ get angry so often?” Anger is depression turned outward.

Plus, body language. “This is a photo from Obama’s own Flickr site, so it presents Obama as Obama’s people want him to be seen.”

More on body language here. “So if this photo of Obama leaning way over to stress his point isn’t technically a bow, who do you think in this picture out of Copenhagen is doing the selling/pleading — China’s Wen Jiabao or America’s Democrat president?”

318 The Republic was lost in the last election. I don't think it can be regained through the ballot box and no one is going to start a revolution over nationalized health care. Let's face it. The experiment in liberty that was the US is over. Once you vote in tyranny you cannot vote it back out. Now it is every man for himself and the devil take the hindmost as all success and failure is dictated from a central authority in Washington DC. If you are in good with the pols then there is no failure too great that they will not bail you out. If you are opposed to them then there is no way you can win. Obama was right, they won. The game is over. You are going to have roughly 40% of the population who will not ever again consider their government to be legitimate. I certainly do not. But that government will not change. It will invade ever more and more areas as there is no Constitutional limitation still recognized upon its powers. Let's say the Pubbies take a bunch of seats in the next election... so what? What can they do even if they had the stones to try? Nothing! The program will be in place and they will never have 60 votes to override a veto. We are officially living in serfdom like the Europeans and there is not a damn thing we can do about it short of revolution. As much as it is needed that just isn't in the cards. Next either Congress or the EPA will give us some sort of carbon limit and we will officially commit suicide as a nation. There has never been a dumber generation of Americans than the one we live in. We will give up everything generations fought for in a vain and foolhardy attempt to control the weather and in an attempt to guarantee everyone's health care in the same manner we just got through trying to guarantee everyone's mortgage.

Kwanzaa creator a secular kook, convict

I think that one of the most lame, pathetic things about the multicultural progressives and militant racial hucksters is their attempt to foist a phony holiday called “Kwanzaa” and to give it equal prominence with Christmas and Hannukah. What do you really know about “Kwanzaa” and its creator?

by Ralph Bailey

There are three aspects of Kwanzaa that most folks don’t know. First, most blacks DON’T celebrate the invented holiday. Secondly, very few non-Americans even know of its existence and finally, its inventor is a kook and a violent convict.

Born Ron Everett, Maulana Karenga gave up what he calls his “European name” right about the time he began to adopt his Marxist, black nationalistic views in the 1960s, right around the time he invented Kwanzaa (Dec. 26, 1966), a week-long celebration focusing on African heritage and culture.

You see, Karenga believes in black separatism and black isolationism. He’s a radical extremist; a member of the Black Power movement and founder of a group called Organization Us.

Yeah, neither had I!

[...]

Karenga went to prison in 1971 for kidnapping a pair of black Organization Us women, stripping them naked, whipping them and, according to their testimony, beating them and sticking a soldering iron in their mouths along with detergent and a water hose.

But this isn’t why black America historically all but ignores Kwanzaa. Black folks, as our support for Proposition 8 clearly demonstrated, maintain a religious heritage that dates back to our inauspicious arrival to this country.

Read the rest here.

The “historic” climate change deal at the Copenhagen climate summit has descended into chaos after some developing nations rejected the plan for fighting global warming championed by US President Barack Obama. …

Tempers flared during an all-night plenary session, held after most of 120 visiting world leaders had left.

Lumumba Stanislaus Di-Aping, the Sudanese negotiator, said the draft text asked “Africa to sign a suicide pact”.

One Saudi delegate said it was without doubt “the worst plenary I have ever attended.”

Ed Miliband, the Environment Secretary, warned delegates that the plan would have to be endorsed to unlock funds outlined in the deal, including $30 billion in “quick-start” aid from 2010-12, rising to $100 billion a year from 2020.

Also paid for: Bernie Sanders. Why not? It’s your money they’re buying votes with, not theirs.

UPDATE: Thoughts from Prof. William Jacobson.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Megan McArdle: “No bill this large has ever before passed on a straight party-line vote, or even anything close to a straight party-line vote. No bill this unpopular has ever before passed on a straight party-line vote. We’re in a new political world. I’m not sure I understand it.”

Obama won. But will this cause people to treat the bill as illegitimate, leading to tax revolts or worse? Or will people grumble and go along?

Plus this: “We’ve just increased substantially the supply of unrepealable, unsustainable entitlements. We’ve also, in my opinion, put ourselves on a road that leads eventually to less healthcare innovation, less healthcare improvement, and more dead people in the long run.” And that’s from an Obama voter.

“Democrats Secure 60 Votes on Health Bill”

Nelson gives in.

  A repost - 'The Anti-Gun Male'

The Anti-Gun Male
by Julia Gorin

LET'S be honest. He's scared of the thing. That's understandable––so am I. But as a girl I have the luxury of being able to admit it. I don't have to
masquerade squeamishness as grand principle - in the interest of mankind, no less.

A man does. He has to say things like "One Taniqua Hall is one too many," as a New York radio talk show host did in referring to the 9-year old New York girl who was accidentally shot last year by her 12 year old cousin playing with his uncle's gun. But the truth is he desperately needs Taniqua Hall, just like he needs as many Columbines and Santees as can be mustered, until they spell an end to the Second Amendment. And not for the benefit of the masses, but for the benefit of his self esteem.

He often accuses men with guns of "compensating for something." The truth is quite the reverse. After all, how is he supposed to feel knowing there are men out there who aren't intimidated by the big bad inanimate villain? How is he to feel in the face of adolescent boys who have used the family gun effectively in defending the family from an armed intruder? So if he can't touch a gun, he doesn't want other men to be able to either. And to achieve his ends, he'll use the only weapon he knows how to manipulate: the law.

Of course, sexual and psychological insecurities don't account for ALL men against guns. Certainly there must be some whose motives are pure, who
perhaps do care so much as to tirelessly look for policy solutions to teenage void and aggressiveness, and to parent and teacher negligence. But for a potentially large underlying contributor, psycho-sexual inadequacy has gone unexplored and unacknowledged. It's one thing to not be comfortable with a firearm and therefore opt to not keep or bear one. But it's another to impose the same handicap onto others.

People are suspicious of what they do not know - and not only does this man not know how to use a gun, he doesn't know the men who do, or the number of people who have successfully used one to defend themselves from injury or death. But he is better left in the dark; his life is hard enough knowing there are men out there who don't sit cross-legged. That they're able to handle a firearm instead of being handled by it would be too much to bear.

Such a man is also best kept huddled in urban centers, where he feels safer than he might if thrown out on his own into a rural setting, in an isolated house on a quiet street where he would feel naked and helpless. Lacking the confidence that would permit him to be sequestered in sparseness, and lacking a gun, he finds comfort in the cloister of crowds.

The very ownership of a gun for defense of home and family implies some assertiveness and a certain self reliance. But if our man kept a gun in the house, and an intruder broke in and started attacking his wife in front of him, he wouldn't be able to later say, "He had a knife––there was nothing I could do!" Passively watching in horror while already trying to make peace with the violent act, scheduling a therapy session and forgiving the perpetrator before the attack is even finished wouldn't be the option it otherwise is.

No. Better to emasculate all men. Because let's face it: He's a lover, not a fighter. And he doesn't want to get shot in case he has an affair with your
wife. Of course, it wouldn't be completely honest not to admit that owning a firearm carries with it some risk to unintended targets. That's the tradeoff with a gun: The right to defend one's life and way of life isn't without peril to oneself. And the last thing this man wants to do is risk his life - if even to save it. For he is guided by a dread fear for his life, and has more confidence in almost anyone else's ability to protect him than his own, preferring to place himself at the mercy of the villain or in the sporadically competent hands of authorities (his line of defense consisting of locks, alarm systems, reasoning with the attacker, calling the police or, should fighting back occur to him, thrashing a heavy vase).

In short, he is a man begging for subjugation. He longs for its promise of equality in helplessness. Because only when that strange, independent
alpha breed of male is helpless along with him will he feel adequate. Indeed, his freedom lies in this other man's containment.

"Then he packed his bags and flew home."

WELT ONLINE; (Google translate)

Hardly U.S. president Barack Obama has entered the conference center, he told the audience: "The time for talking is over." From now on he wanted to take over the negotiations.

Together with Chancellor Angela Merkel, the "bosses" from Russia, Brazil, Japan, the European Union and other major countries, Obama was set to work. But it did not run, as the Nobel Peace Prize winner had imagined. Only Federal Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen remained optimistic. Despite the tough negotiations, there could be a compromise, he said. "This fall the dice."

Instead, paved in a fiasco.

[...]

According to rumors from the Bella Center, U.S. President Barack Obama is said to have asked impatiently to 21 clock for an interview with Wen Jiabao, to move things forward. But Obama had to wait. Wen, who was rumored to his hotel room during the entire Congress hardly ever left, has long been found. Finally, the U.S. delegation was able to make the Chinese Premier in finding a negotiated room. An apparently infuriated Obama will then be rushed into the room. "Are you now willing to talk to me, Mr. Prime Minister?", He should have called. "Are we ready? Mr. Premier, are you ready to talk with me? "

What a performance by a U.S. president.

Wen was also not alone in the room when Obama was literally burst in, as it was in Congress circles. The Chinese was in talks with India's leader Manmohan Singh and South African President Jacob Zuma. Suddenly, the group found itself forced into a conversation with the U.S. president.

"Why on earth did the American people vote the Empty Suit into the POTUS? No experience, a poor performance as a Senator, hidden records and a variety of unanswered questions, and he was voted in. Very bloody strange. Insulting comments to China, treating it like a disobedient child? Good God, the man is a complete moron without his teleprompter and handlers."

Lord Monkton’s take:
For all the rhetoric – or the flatulence that passes for rhetoric these days – it has begun to dawn on the “leaders” of those nations that subject them to regular recall and re-election that the people no longer believe the mad scientists are telling them the truth. And the people are right.

Of course, this is an open thread.

Lord Monckton describes being knocked out by a Danish cop in Copenhagen. But that really isn’t the centerpiece of his blogpost. It was when he woke up and realized it was to a world he presumed would never live in that the really interesting part of his narrative begins. All around him a carnival was in full swing amid which cops, like black beetles,  prowled. The imagery of it smote him. The “show” events sponsored by the EU and the UN; the casual brutality by the cops, the emphasis being on the ‘casual’, the whole pointless insanity of it shook him to the core. He wrote:

Europe is no longer a free society. It is, in effect, a tyranny ruled by the unelected Kommissars of the European Union. That is perhaps one reason why police forces throughout Europe, including that in the UK, have become far more brutal than was once acceptable in their treatment of the citizens they are sworn to serve.

It is exactly this species of tyranny that the UN would like to impose upon the entire planet, in the name of saving us from ourselves – or, as Ugo Chavez would put it, saving us from Western capitalist democracy.

A few weeks ago, at a major conference in New York, I spoke about this tendency towards tyranny with Dr. Vaclav Klaus, the distinguished economist and doughty fighter for freedom and democracy who is President of the Czech Republic.

While we still have one or two statesmen of his caliber, there is hope for Europe and the world. Unfortunately, he refused to come to Copenhagen, telling me that there was no point, now that the lunatics were firmly in control of the asylum.

Maybe this was Monckton feeling the effects of the lump on his head. But it may be a feeling that people are going to be increasingly familiar with. People have always believed that ‘they can’t do that; can’t foist this fraud on me; can’t take over 15% of the US economy just like that; can’t give my tax money to Hugo Chavez; can’t borrow money from China in my name and give to China.’ But if you realize one day that the answer to those questions is “Yes we can” — and there’s no point arguing, then you will have discovered the Day After Feeling.  Our grandfathers knew it. We thought to be spared. Monckton felt it briefly and had put the question to Vaclav Klaus:

Although I disagree with almost everything else, yes, it’s the lack of money that’s gonna get them. The Left soaked up the peace dividend. They appropriated the fruits of everything they worked so hard not to win. The Clinton years were the key time, when the end of history made is possible to imagine a future where the only things we had to worry about were the Y2K bug and the ozone layer. A huge slug of free energy, like a lottery ticket, made an explosion of fantasy possible.

Winning the lottery often ruins lives. And maybe in this case all the projects which really took off that era — multiculturalism, political correctness, runaway greenism, the proliferation of NGOs and transnational stuctures — and the mood which rose to match — a never ending boom, a future that could be built on credit — this was the lottery that sank the West. It wasn’t the end of history. It was the binge at the moment of a victory they never wanted, but were prepared to exploit anyway.

And now, guess what? The money’s run out. But it was enough to pay for all the state expansion the left craved so much. Now they’re going to have to hang on to this dead weight without the wherewithal to pay for it. In a way they are stuck with their railroad line to Medina. All the leftie programs they can’t roll back. All the free health care they’ve just gotta have, along with the death panels that go with them. The carbon trading industry. The safe schools with perverts in charge of them. The free sex change operations. The sanctuary cities. The handouts for the SEIU. All the junk they bought on credit that they can’t pay for. They’re going to try to hang on to it all. The monkey trap. And like the railway to Medina, the tribes they can’t overawe are going to be galloping up and down the line blowing things up. The Left can’t handle limited warfare. That’s immoral. So they’re going to let things slide until in a panic they get ready to nuke all them flies buzzing around their heads. Islamic extremism isn’t going to defeat the West; but it will force an insane elite self-destruct, like the robot shorting out squawking “it does not compute”.

So look for them to buy more stuff on credit. Look for them to create more “cliff functions” in defense policy. They’re just going to kick things down the road until even they realize they’ve gone over the edge. And when they do it’ll be “help save me!”

But not yet. Until the last hour the party’s gonna rollick on. Folly has always been like that. You drink down the champagne and then when it’s gone you crack the bottle against the edge of the desk and defend yourself with the shards. How does one avoid the fate of Detroit, or Fannie Mae? Improving things each year with a fix until there’s nothing left but ruins? That’s the characteristic of all these hare-brained schemes; the signature of the Ponzi racket. Everything is described as improving and getting better until the hour the whole thing collapses.

Sunday showdown: The Senate’s Demcare treachery

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 20, 2009 10:03 AM

Sellout Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) got his Cash-for-Cloture Christmas present early: Special Medicaid expansion subsidies for his state ($45 million for starters over the next decade). The budget-strapped governors of every other state in the union ought to be crying foul.

Despite his protestations and rationalizations, government abortion funding remains in the bill.

As the Small Business Against Big Government blog quipped: The secret to the Art of the Sellout is to pretend you tried.

FYI: The Senate plan also still allows for government coverage of illegal aliens.

We are all Joe Wilsons now.

President Obama, September 9, 2009:

There are also those who claim that our reform effort will insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false – the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally. And one more misunderstanding I want to clear up – under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions…

THEY LIE.

Time is of the essence. Here’s the rundown of the next 24 hours:

“Following the remarks of Senator Coburn, the Senate will adjourn until 1:00pm Sunday, December 20. Following the prayer and pledge, the time until 1:30pm will be equally divided and controlled between the two Leaders or their designees. Beginning at 1:30pm and until 11:30pm, there will be alternating blocks of time, with the Republicans controlling the first hour and the Majority controlling the next hour.

At 11:30pm (Sunday), the Senate will recess until 12:01am Monday, December 21. Following the prayer and pledge, the time until 1:00am will be equally divided and controlled between the two leaders or their designees, with the Majority Leader controlling the final 10 minutes and the Republican Leader controlling the 10 minutes immediately prior.

At 1:00AM Monday, December 21, the Senate will proceed to a cloture vote on the Reid-Baucus-Dodd-Harkin amendment #2376.”

Did Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell’s strategy (or lack thereof) fail? RedState thinks so.

But it ain’t over ’til it’s over.

Nebraskans are rebelling.

The rest of us must continue to raise our voices, too, and fight to the end.

Melt those phones.

The corruption of the deliberative process over Demcare gives complete lie to the pretense that government can run health care in a non-corruptible way. Must-read big picture essay from Doctor Zero: “The illusion of design.” An excerpt:

Liberals insist it is simply unthinkable to allow financial considerations to impact the distribution of this essential human right. As Kirsten Powers put it recently, “Americans will die if we don’t provide universal health insurance.” Because money is the instrument through which free people express their will and make choices, the argument for socialized medicine boils down to the superiority of design and control over competition and choice.

So, in summary, the case for nationalizing health insurance is that health care cannot be entrusted to the unpredictability and greed of the free market. The individual purchasing decisions of free men and women are too chaotic. The only way to ensure access to health care for everyone is for the State to install a massive, strictly enforced system, complete with huge fines and jail time for those who fail to comply. This system would be superior to the free market, because it would be carefully designed by brilliant minds… engineered to deliver an incredibly complex, ever-changing service to hundreds of millions of Americans.

Is anyone stupid enough to think a “carefully designed system” is what the Democrats are about to drop on us?

Senator Ben Nelson (D-Nebraska) held up the Senate reform bill over his heartfelt concerns over abortion funding… until he was bought off with hundreds of millions of dollars in enhanced funding for Medicaid in his state. In a similar vein, language worth over $100 million was added to the bill, targeting the state of Louisiana, to purchase the vote of “moderate” Democrat Mary Landrieu. In other words, this “carefully designed” health care bill has different rules for people who happen to live in Nebraska or Louisiana, because this was necessary to buy the votes of their senators.

The Congressional Budget Office scoring for the health care reform bill is based on tricks and gimmicks, including Medicare reductions and cuts of over 20% in physician payments, that no one seriously believes will actually happen. A great deal of this health care reform package is a delusional fantasy, if not an outright fraud.

Socialist senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont jammed a 767-page amendment into the bill, then violated Senate procedures to suddenly withdraw it when Republicans forced the entire amendment to be read on the Senate floor.

Far from being a brilliant plan constructed by top doctors and financial experts in a government brain trust, this health-care bill is a twisted, deformed political document, seen in its entirety by only a few high-ranking politicians belonging to a single political party. Its components have not been precisely crafted as part of a fantastic system calibrated to ensure the maximum access to quality health care for all Americans.

The bill is not being examined with transparency and careful deliberation by representatives who behave as humble servants of the people and their Constitution. Instead, it’s being hastily rammed through in the dead of night, over the objection of powerful majorities of the American people, with desperate last-minute deals cut to acquire the necessary votes, financed by vast sums of taxpayer money. The primary consideration is not crafting the most sophisticated and intelligent health care reform… it’s getting a bill pushed through before angry voters have a chance to blast the Democrats out of Congress.

Green Jobs, and Other Fairy Tales

by snork ( 101 Comments › )
Filed under Barack Obama, Economy, Global Warming Hoax, Progressives, Science, Technology at December 20th, 2009 - 5:00 am

From Ron Bailey at Reason Magazine, this piece dissects what “green jobs” (remember Van Jones?) has meant for Germany where it’s been tried.

Proponents of renewable energies often regard the requirement for more workers to produce a given amount of energy as a benefit, failing to recognize that this lowers the output potential of the economy and is hence counterproductive to net job creation. Significant research shows that initial employment benefits from renewable policies soon turn negative as additional costs are incurred. Trade and other assumptions in those studies claiming positive employment turn out to be unsupportable.

Well, Golly. That didn’t work out like it was supposed to, did it? Who knew that if you try to force decisions on the market that the market wouldn’t have made on its own, that there might be side effects?

Despite the fondest hopes of Kerry, Pelosi, Markey, and other Democrats in Congress, carbon rationing has not noticeably sparked a technological revolution in Europe yet. One might argue that a cleantech takeoff is just around the corner and that the energy revolution is just at the same stage as the Internet revolution was in 1991. Maybe. But the Internet analogy deployed by Kerry and co. misses the mark in another way—the Internet and cell phone boom took off as a result of deregulation and was largely financed by private capital. By contrast, the Capitol Hill denizens now haunting the Copenhagen conference imagine they can spark a similar technological revolution by passing a massive 1,400-page bill, laden with subsidies, tax breaks, and fine-grained regulations for all aspects of energy production.

Let me dispose one myth right here and now about the internet. The internet, as we know it, was not created by the government; US or otherwise. The DoD created an ad-hocish patchwork of military and academic minicomputers connected by an assortment of serial links of the sort that were leading-edge at the time of the creation. They were roughly like RS-232 links. Comparing that to today’s internet is like comparing a bicycle to a Saturn V rocket.

The internet didn’t really come into its own until the World Wide Web (WWW) was placed on top of it by the private sector. The infrastructure was in the hands of private telecommunications firms at that point. For practical intents and purposes, the government agencies that originally organized the internet had lost control of it a decade earlier.

There are many other examples floating the internet of government taking credit for what was substantially done by the private sector: the transistor, the integrated circuit, the jet airplane, even the original digital computer was a Navy project. So technology can’t possibly get out of the nest without a government incubator, right?

These examples all ignore the technologies that were launched with no government sponsorship; the television, the telephone and telegraph, electrical power, pretty much every of over 1000 inventions Edison patented. The point being, when the time is right, it will appear.

So what does this have to do with green jobs?

1. As the German study indicates, they displace other jobs.
2. If the technologies were ripe, they’d happen anyway.
3. If the technologies aren’t ripe, as is the case with most of this green tech, its a forced fit.

In other words, you can’t push on a rope. Central planning never worked when the Soviets tried it, and Obama isn’t magically more able than Stalin.

So, does this mean that we’re stuck with oil and oil ticks forever? No. Just as you can’t command technology, you also can’t anticipate it. When the worldwide price of oil stays high, because of new demand from the developing nations, the alternatives become more attractive. We can’t tell in advance what these alternatives will be, but what is as reliable as the sunrise is that the market will seek the optimum solution.

In other words, carbon caps will be superfluous when a better alternative comes along, and will be dangerous until then. Let me put it this way: ask yourself two questions. When has the market, absent some insider monkey business involving the government, failed? And, when has the government failed?

Which would you trust the earth to?

The new Obamao disapproval poll is -15. It’s only been lower 3 times. The daily Rasmussen Poll is a rolling average from the past 3 days. I expect a continued downward trend as the negative effects of the Copenchange disaster, the healthcare vote and the continued unease over the NYC terror trials take their toll on Comrade Zero. Hope to see -20 by the end of the year.

Good Morning Folks,
I was at a small Christmas gathering last night, talking to a friend who travels in the world of libs.
She said, none of those who sung Zero’s praises around election time are doing that now. They are worried abt. losing their jobs and paying their mortgages. If they thought Zero was the messiah a year ago, they don’t now. My friend said it seems odd how he doesn’t even come up in conversation at this point.

48 | December 20, 2009 6:52 am Mugged by reality, eh? They (and we) haven’t even begun to feel the pain; wait until the bills for all of this excess come due. Wait until none of this government-run crap works, oh the wailing and gnashing of teeth will be deafening.

Me? I’m just going to smile and ask people of that ilk “so, how’s that “Hope” and “Change” working out for you?”...

PROF. KENNETH ANDERSON: Copenhagen as UN Politics, Not Climate Change Substance. “At bottom, the question is one of legitimacy and what it means to say that a climate change deal requires, in Secretary General Ban’s words, an ‘equitable global governance structure’ to administer it, and the many, many, many things that apparently fall under its tent. What is this global governance? What makes it equitable and, therefore, legitimate? Is it legitimate to do a deal of global proportions, on climate change or anything else, and not involve everyone? If your issue is simply the substance of climate change policy, and not UN politics, then you don’t much care about these abstract issues of legitimacy, global governance, and the UN. Until the end of Copenhagen, in which it turns out that — given the breathtaking scope of things to be governed under the rubric of climate change, starting, really, with the whole of the global economy — that the meanings of global governance, legitimacy, and the UN matter after all. . . . That’s not a problem for me, because I ascribe minimal legitimacy to the UN and zero to the General Assembly and its members qua members. But for a large number of international law experts and devotees, among others, this is a problem.”

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR: Obama faces new global warming skeptic: Joe Sixpack: As President Obama returns from Copenhagen, polls show that Americans are becoming more more wary of his global warming agenda – and of global warming itself.
