Cardinal O'Malley rips pro-Obama Catholics on health care

Boston, Mass., Mar 20, 2010 / 09:03 am (CNA).- The Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Sean O'Malley, yesterday criticized organizations such as the Catholic Health Association and Network for supporting a health care bill that will halt decades of government neutrality on the issue of abortion.

"Health care is such an important issue for the United States. It’s very disturbing to see that there seems to be a rush to push through legislation without carefully weighing all of the consequences," wrote Cardinal O'Malley on his blog.

"I think it’s unfortunate that some Catholic groups have not paid close enough attention to what the bishops are saying regarding the present legislation. It would undermine the Hyde Amendment and put us at the mercy of regulations that could very easily be altered."

"As many studies have shown," the Cardinal explained, “the vast majority of Americans favored the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits federal money from being used to pay for abortions. The only thing we are asking is that this be enshrined in the new legislation."

"In our enthusiasm for universal health care, we cannot underestimate the importance of having a strong and firm backing for the principles of the Hyde Amendment incorporated into this legislation. The administration should take more time to craft legislation that will create a consensus in the country rather than trying to force through this legislation by using procedural gimmicks," Cardinal O'Malley concluded.

U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, a South Boston Democrat, has said he will vote against the Senate bill because he thought most of the U.S. House bill's provisions enacting “significant reform” have been stripped, WBUR.org reports.

Congressman Lynch has been attacked in television ads paid for by "Catholics United," a pro-Obama lobbying organization.

It’s unfortunate this was not done sooner. Most of the politicians will not even hear of this befor they vote (not that it would matter much anyway.

I agree. The bishops should have been on this 30 years ago. They could have stopped the Kennedy's, the Pelosi's, the Dodd's, et.al.

But, now that they are in the fight, they need to gird their loins (biblically speaking) and really fight this bill.

What a hypocrite. He allowed a public funeral that nearly canonized Teddy Kennedy a saint. His website was nothing but Teddy glorification for days. Now he does the right thing. He helped create the environment that bred this kind of behavior among people who call themselves “Catholic.”

Haven’t we seen this all before? The bishops have a habit of making these speeches far too late in the game to make a difference. Instead of doing something meaningful, like publicly excommunicating the Nancy Pelosis of the world, they make these CYA speeches. After all, they have to do something to ensure that Catholics who actually follow their religion keep coughing up the money for the church.

Before I get flamed, I’m a church attending conservative Catholic.

Congressman Lynch has been attacked in television ads paid for by "Catholics United," a pro-Obama lobbying organization.

I heard this attack ad on Boston's WBZ radio today. Then, as news, the station kept repeating an audio clip from some "nun" who says that the health care bill is pro-life and 47,000 Americans die every year because they can't get health care.

"I agree. The bishops should have been on this 30 years ago."

Right and while they were at it, the Bishops could have sent out a letter or two about contraception and shacking up. Depending on Washington laws for moral guidance could not replace the pulpit providing guidance to pregnant women on abortion.

“....the Bishops could have sent out a letter or two about contraception and shacking up.”

.
And about going to Communion on flip-flops, shorts, while chewing gum, showing lots of cleavage and other insanities. Good grief, all this did not happen pre-Vatican II.

Nah, Catholics in Boston had all but lost their Catholic faith LONG before O'Malley showed up.

I heard this attack ad on Boston's WBZ radio today.

I heard it on Oldies 103! The language was flowery, and talking about the 'sacredness of life', then it devolved into a diatribe against Insurance companies, so I realized it was an ad FOR Obamacare. I wasn't surprised a bit, when at the end, the ad mentioned it was created by Catholics United.

If Lynch is voting against it because of the abortion language, I'm thrilled. That's better than what Jim McGovern, our alleged Catholic congressman from the 3rd District, is doing. He's even a supporter of Partial Birth abortion!

You are right. The Bishops were negligent in their duties. They have been preaching love and ‘can’t we all just get along’ when the wolves (bad people) were eating their flocks.
