A new poll shows Arizona Sen. John McCain widening his lead over his Republican challenger ahead of next month's GOP primary.

The Rocky Mountain Poll released Wednesday shows McCain leading former U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth 64 percent to 19 percent. Political newcomer Jim Deakin had 5 percent.

McCain's margin has widened from a 54 percent to 28 percent lead he held over Hayworth in the same poll in April.

The telephone poll was conducted by the Behavior Research Center between June 30 and July 11 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.4 percentage points. Pollsters surveyed a random sample of 334 registered Arizona voters, including 190 Republicans and 144 independents who said they would vote in the Republican primary.

I figured all along that mc cain would fool enough idiots to get him re-elected. If that happens, Ariona deserves what he does to them. The rest of the Nation does not deserve it,but, when it rains, it rains on the just as well as the unjust.

Palin has nothing to do with it.

That's just silly. Palin has more clout with Republican voters than any other national figure. She used this clout to strengthen the hand of the anti-conservatives. Why she did this does not make any difference. She will "own" a McCain victory and all of the future backstabbing that entails.

Does that mean that he will take the conservative mask off with a vengeance after November and can put his maverick cap on again?

yes the primaries are open - they had a big soap opera about closing them, but then they dropped the ball and decided to leave them open.

you bet you booty that either dems or mcLAME himself is fueling this poll...it’s bogus.

McCain should retire and let some fresh conservative blood go from Arizona to DC.

C’mon Arizonans wake up and don’t support McCain in the primary! You are leading the fight in the nation against illegal immigration - now put someone in new office who truly supports your views and won’t sell you out down the road.

This is yet another reason why America needs Congressional Term Limits - over the long haul it would literally save this country literally trillions (yes, Trillions) of taxpayer’s dollars. It’s a crying shame the Founding Fathers didn’t have the foresight put this in the Bill of Rights - now we have way too many Congressmen punch drunk on their own power, placing their own political interests above the safety and welfare of our nation and those generations to come. Those who do are despicable traitors and parasites - I hope as many as possible will be swept out in November.

5 for the House and 2 for the Senate!

I love Sarah Palin but she will be responsible for giving the Republican Party 6 more years of hemorrhoids should the gelding win.

Perhaps you should blame JD.

Perhaps we should praise JD, after all in a few months he forced McCain to take some conservative positions. Something we could not accomplish for a decade.

No, she doesn't. There are a lot of Sarah supporters who disagree with Sarah's endorsement of McCain and have contributed to JD. I am one of them.

Quit using guilt-by-association tactics. Not all of Palin's supporter are robots.

And Sarah Palin isn’t an idiot.

I’m not crazy about McCain over the POW issue - but he’s not a communist. He’s very fiscally responsible - not a horrific thing - and Hayworth is a clown.

The poll is doctored. Of course McRINO would be leading among his natural constituency (Democrats) and squishes ("independents").

524 registered voters

190 Republicans

173 Democrats

161 "independents"
