Cain says Forbes concluded Perry camp was source of harassment leak

Justin Sink

November 3, 2011

Herman Cain said Forbes Magazine - and not his campaign - was responsible for the concluding that Rick Perry's campaign leaked the story of sexual harassment allegations during Cain's tenure as the president of the National Restaurant Association.

"A reporter did this research and came up with these facts, we didn't," Cain said Thursday on Sean Hannity's radio show. "That was the reporter that wrote the report for Forbes."

But despite adamant denials from the Perry camp, Cain said he still doesn't "see any other way this could have come out."

The Forbes article, headlined "Cain Says Perry Camp Behind Sex Harassment Leak," quoted the candidate as saying that he told former staffer Curt Anderson, now a consultant for the Perry campaign, about the allegations. But Cain is not quoted specifically accusing Anderson of being the leak.

The Cain campaign quickly seized on the article Wednesday night, seemingly validating Forbes' reporting that Cain was laying blame at Perry's feet.

"‪Rick Perry needs to apologize to Herman Cain, his family, and America for this despicable story‬," Cain's chief of staff Mark Block said Wednesday on Fox News.

Anderson has denied the accusations, saying in a statement: "I have great respect for Herman and his character and I would never speak ill of him, on the record or off the record."

He also told Fox News that any reporters he had ever spoken to about the Cain allegations were free to openly attribute those comments to him. In doing so, he opened up the door for Politico, who originally reported the allegations, to confirm him as the source. Politico has not done so, effectively eliminating Anderson as the source of the story.

Block said earlier Thursday that he would "accept" the claim by Anderson that he was not behind the story.

"Until we get all the facts, I'm just going to say that we accept what Mr. Anderson has said, and we want to move on with the campaign," Block said on Fox News.

But Cain seemed unconvinced, telling Hannity "there aren't enough breadcrumbs that leads us to any other place."

"I believe a lot of people are connecting the dots for themselves," Cain said. "I don't see any other way this could have come out."

Cain also said he's "almost certain" he told Anderson about the allegations.

"I am almost certain that I did. … This is why we want to get off this merry-go-round," Cain said.

Cain needs to defect from the Mitt/Rove complex and come on over to our side.

Now, that would be refreshing!

i agree.

but it is said that a moral and ethical man as cain has to be treated this way.

we need a return to civil political discourse.

the left started the slide downhill in our universities.

yes, we have sent money to cain and will continue to do so.

To most reasonable people it looks more and more that Perry had nothing to do with this. You want to witness dirty politics just look towards Romney.

True - that sort of thing just isn't Perry's style.

However, Romney has done this sort of thing in the past.

I know that Perry is a hard campaigner, but I won’t believe
that he would stoop to this kind of gossipy tactic. He knows
that it would surely backfire and make HIM look bad. He’s
NOT stupid...much as some would love to paint him that way
because he is a Texan.

I wish they’d just get on with campaigning and not acting like
a bunch of fishwives! *sigh*

It’s a new thread that is “alleging” all he did was ask “Can you doctor my tea darling?”

If this is true then the hit piece is pretty darn stupid.

One of the women was represented by a lawyer named Bennett. On CNN the other night he said it’s his understanding that someone from the NRA leaked the story.

“it’s amazing how many on this forum have accepted the democrat-progressive and republican-progressive lies about cain.”

A lot of this has the aura of the famous scene in the movie Casablanca when the French police chief is shocked, shocked to see gambling going on.

There are a lot of folks with competing political campaigns posting here. And campaigns use paid bloggers when they can’t find enough useful idiots to do the work for them. The perrywinkles at FR are about the nastiest of the lot, and their campaign is the one that stands accused of skulduggery.

Accusing the perry campaign of skulduggery is kind of like accusing the sun of rising in the east and setting in the west, but I digress...

It isn’t standing policy at FR to zot perrywinkles, so it looks like we’ll just have to endure their bullmitt for the time being. So expect lots of hand wringing comments and “grave concern” over this until it blows over in about a week. Just remember, though, that since the story broke polls have shown Cain’s numbers holding their own. The people who actually vote don’t seem to care about this.

Thanks, I stand corrected. As the flat tax plans are similar in substance, I assumed they were the same.

Forbes is Perry’s guy, so this still doesn’t make sense to me since Steve is editor in chief of the Magazine.

But, But, But, he is now “almost certain” that he told Anderson.

Looks to me that Cain is certain he told Anderson.

And what's with your stutter?

Ah, yes....I did hear about that.

I suspected from the start that these allegations against Cain were likely a bunch of leftist hyperbole because the Obaminators were afraid of him.

However, the response by Cain and his campaign has been disappointing.

Yeah. He has other folks to do it for him.

I don't know if Perry would stoop this low, but there are more than a few Perry supporters on this board who apparently would.

the source of the report matters less than the truth of the report, at this point

If it happened. who cares who leaked it?
If It is false then worry about who leaked a false report

quibbling about the source is premature at this point, Herman

It has and they should have been ready and talked with the parent organization about what could be said or not involving the accusation. I still support Mr. Cain
