**Exclusive**

Late Thursday evening, Mitt Romney's presidential campaign launched a new fundraising drive, 'Meet The VP' -- just as Romney himself has narrowed the field of candidates to a handful, sources reveal.

And a surprise name is now near the top of the list: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice!

The timing of the announcement is now set for 'coming weeks'.

MORE

It was Condi who received two standing ovations at Romney's Utah retreat a few weeks ago, and everyone left with her name on their lips.

Rice made an extended argument for American leadership in the world.

Commencement Address at Boston College (Secretary Condoleezza Rice, Boston, Massachusetts, May 22, 2006. US Department of State)

Excerpts:

As a student of a Catholic high school, the Sisters of Loretta taught me, I am pleased to be at an institution of higher education with such strong and celebrated Catholic and Jesuit traditions . . . You see, I got my Master's Degree at Notre Dame. (Boos.) I acquired a passion for the fighting Irish . . . and my family has been college educated and Presbyterian ever since. (Laughter and applause.) . . . I wandered into a course on international politics taught by a Czech refugee who specialized in Soviet studies, a man who had a daughter by the name of Madeleine Albright. With that one class, I was hooked. I discovered that my passion was Russia and all things Russian.

yup... there’s no way - she said no and I believe her. This is a diversion.

They also need a dynamic politician - Condi isn’t one... Romney is barely one... someone like Chris Christie

"Thanks kristinn. John Bolton?"

He did endorse him to the astonishment of most freepers.

I like Condi but I think Romney would be better off with a Hispanic VP if he wants to win the presidency.

Trouble is time will march on after this election and the next.

Whomever Romney picks stands a pretty good chance of being the next republican in line for the following 8 years.

Thats 16 years before we can look forward to a conservative nominee, in the best case.

She has constantly -— and recently -— said that she is not the least bit interested. So I wonder what’s up.

someone like Chris Christie

Christie will ensure Obama's election. The GOP needs a solid, pro-life social conservative as its veep candidate. Otherwise, much of the base stays home.

Oh, yeah, a pro-abortion vp is going to solidify the base.

*Rolling eyes*

No. I don't think so. This could be a feint to distract attention from Romney's real choice.

FWIW: I don't think Rice ever said she voted for Obama. She congratulated him for his victory in her capacity as Secretary of State.

Later she played coy when asked if she'd voted for him. She might have voted for Obama, but it's by no means established that she did.

Somebody who grew up Black in segregated America might find some satisfaction in a person of her race being elected, whether she actually voted for him or not.

She'd be an awful choice though, making it easier for Obama to run against Bush again.

She might be an okay Veep...but she would be a terrible waste as part of the ticket and as a campaigner.

Mitt needs a spirited pitt bull...someone who is willing to tear into Obama as a surrogate!

Rubio, Christie, or Ryan!

Pick Liz Cheney instead. She also has experience in State Dept, has great poise, and comes across as intelligent and level headed.

“Condi debating Biden - I think about 100 IQ points separate them.”

True. And she has a PhD. I’ll give her this—she’s articulate and clearly able to hold her own with the Boys’ Club. Sometimes, I have thought her wise.

The whole 0bama thing was about race. She was so wrong on that that I figure she went with the crowd.

Oh, and in re Iraq: where exactly do we think Syria came up with all the weapons and WMDs they have now, hmmmm?
