WHAT is Romney doing with his money? Where are the ads??
October 6th 2012 | County Agent Hank Kimball

OK, I don't watch a lot of regular network programming. Here's what I watch:

Major Legue Baseball
College and NFL Football
FoxNews
Occasional reruns of Frasier, which appear on the Hallmark Channel I believe.

My wife, however, watches various things on Bravo like those insipid Real Housewife shows, Top Chef, etc. (Yes, I know...) and Lifetime Channel.

Neither of us have seen a SINGLE Romney ad in weeks. Not one. I have seen dozens of Obama ads, and they appear to be generating new ones all the time. The most recent, today, was a rebuttal to the debate featuring Andrea Mitchell, and I saw that at least 3 times today alone.

Are the Romney people doing ANY advertising on national cable channels? I'm not kidding when I say I've seen not one, and neither has my wife.

Are they saving their money for a big election-nigh party? Spending it on consultants?

I must admit I'm at a loss.

Hank

I believe advertising, even though the shows may be seen nationally, is done locally. I can be watching the OSU game in Colorado on ABC and during commercial break, I’m getting a Romney or Obama commercial and my dad watching the same game in central OH will get a different commercial. The same also happens with ESPN or WGN for the baseball games
Come up to CO if you want to see massive amounts of political TV commercials, radio ads, flyers, billboards, direct mailings, and anything else the campaigns can think of. They’ve been non-stop for both sides since early summer

Thanks for the info and the link.

I still think Romney is missing the mark dramatically by (apparently) not adverising on national cable channels. How many people watch local networks versus ESPN, A&E, National Geographic Channel, Discovery Channel, TBS, TNT, etc., etc.

I think a huge percentage of TV viewership is on these large national channels and the Romney camp appears to have blown them off entirely.

About 50% of advertising on national channels are still sold locally.

Here in Colorado the ads appear about 4 times an hour, we are swing state and the polls are showing Romney building a lead!

"Again...these are national networks. National ads. People all across the country are seing the same ads. Of course, he wouldn’t advertise on local channels in Texas I understand that. But these ads are all being seen in Ohio, Florida, and everywhere else. I just don’t get it."

I'm not sure that is how it works, I was watching the same baseball games earlier (TBS) in Minnesota and was seeing a ton of Bachmann and other local ads. It would be a complete waste of money for her to run ads in Texas, so my guess is that local ads run during the national broadcasts. I could be wrong though, I've never been in the TV business.

On another note, I did see 2 Obama ads during the game, if he has to spend money here its a good thing.

Really?! Obama ads? I’m in the Central Valley and the only ads I see are on national tv and they’re all O ads. Are you seeing them on local programming? Are there a lot of them? Or just occasional?

Hmmm. Interesting thought. I’m watching on satellite (DirecTV).

The thing that still doesn’t compute is that I’m seeing all the Obama ads. Surely, Filth isn’t paying for ads to run in East Texas where, as another poster pointed out, will go 70 percent or so for Romney.

Interesting. OK. So the Romney camp apparently made the decision not to do any of the national buys?

That would account for some people seeing some Romney ads and Filth ads, while others are seeing only Filth ads. Obama is buying national and local, while Romney’s buying only local.

Thanks,
Hank

Occasionally, they aren’t playing on the national stations but the local stations, who are affiliated with the networks.
So you do have a good point though.
Like the LA ABC which I think is a national network I haven’t seen any in the evening but when the local Santa Barbara ABC is on during the day, there are obama ads, I guess they still could be national.
During the day the local stations are showing a different line up than the LA stations.

You're not understanding: He is advertising on national cable channels. But technology now allows advertisers to target specific segments of advertising to local markets and regional markets on "national channels." While you are seeing an ad for Wal Mart on NBC in Texas, a guy in Ohio is seeing a Romney ad, and a guy in Pennsylvania is seeing an ad for the PA Senate race.

Really.

THAT is exactly what triggered me. Millions upon millions are watching these games and seing nothing but Filth propoganda. Except, perhaps where Romney is buying local ads.

Makes no sense to me.

Ads are priced according to how many eyeballs will be reached. Reach 50 states; pay for reaching 50 states (Duh!)How should mass mailings work then? Should R/R do mailouts to all 50 states or pay much less by limiting their mailings to swing states. Simple economics.

Most of the narrow audience cable channels don’t get Nielsens done, so a campaign would have no idea of the demographics of who was was watching, much less where.

From your profile it appears you are in TX. How much money would you like the Romney campaign to waste in TX?

I spoke with a friend in FL before the debates who was concerned about the dearth of Romney ads. He texted me in the last couple of days to ignore that conversation, that the floodgates opened up after the debates.

I suspect it is the same in other key swing states. Romney and his people are pretty darn smart and aren’t going to be wasting money.

” - - - The most recent, today, was a rebuttal to the debate - - - “

What you saw was a DEFENSE ad: in politics, when you are explaining you are on defense.

Romney, as coached by the debate consultants is the real Romney.

Romney, as coached by his Campaign staff is a disaster.

Why Romeny does not fire his Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaavud “Top” Advisors is beyond me, unless he is determined not to win.

Thanks for this thread. Your $ question is a great one.

RINO Mind Meld ignores the fact that 35 % of Voters this year will have a chance to vote early. Many have already sent in their marked ballots.

RINO Mind Meld still assumes that “people really don’t decide who they are going to vote for until 24 hours before the election.” Many have already voted.

RINO Mind Meld finds comfort is losing by being really, REALLY stupid, politically. Witness RINO Poster Boy Lame-Brain McCain. He is still on TV and still offering advice.

Keep an eye on them. If gas prices out here are making such a big splash nationally, O may get worried about CA. NO WAY he wins w/o CA.
