Ukrainian Jews worry that rise of Svoboda party will bring anti-Semitism back into vogue

Marching in formation, six young men in dark jackets approach an anti-government rally in Cherkasy, a city some 125 miles southeast of Kiev.

At the appointed moment, they remove their windbreakers to reveal white T-shirts emblazoned with the words “Beat the kikes.” Their jackets carry the name of Svoboda, the ultranationalist Ukrainian political party.

Isn't Svoboda a big part of the newly formed, Obama-backed Ukranian regime?

Yes, it is. Has 6 ministers.

World Jewish Congress asked that Svoboda be banned as being anti-Semitic.

Straight-arm salutes, torchlight night parades, Nazi symbols and “Beat the Yid” t-shirts.

This is what the U.S. has brought to power.

Svoboda reveres Bandera, whose primary ideology was to kill Jews, and who practiced that ideology very well, with even greater vigor than the Germans.

Bandera, his deputies, and the Nazis shared a key obsession, namely that the Jews in Ukraine were behind Communism and must be destroyed.

“The Jews of the Soviet Union,” read a Banderist statement, “are the most loyal supporters of the Bolshevik Regime and the vanguard of Muscovite imperialism in the Ukraine.”

When the Germans invaded the USSR in June 1941 and captured the East Galician capital of Lvov, Bandera’s lieutenants issued a declaration of independence in his name. They further promised to work closely with Hitler.

They helped to launch a pogrom that killed 4,000 Lvov Jews in a few days, using weapons ranging from guns to metal poles. “We will lay your heads at Hitler’s feet,” a Banderist pamphlet proclaimed to Ukrainian Jews.

Svoboda holds a tiny minority of 450 seats in the Ukrainian (Rada)Parliament.

The main Ukrainian far right party, Svoboda, has utterly failed to reclaim its popular support that dwindled throughout 2013. In the 2012 parliamentary elections Svoboda won 10.44% of the vote; by the end of January – beginning of February 2014, according to the opinion polls, only 5.6% of the voters would have cast their ballot for Svoboda in a parliamentary election – enough to pass the electoral threshold but obviously too poor to exert significant influence on Ukraine’s politics. Even worse for the party, its leader Oleh Tyahnybok’s presidential rating fell from 10.4% in March 2013 to 3.8% at the end of January – beginning of February 2014, making him a no-go presidential candidate.

Bandera's organization was so anti-semitic that the leadership had Jewish wives and one of the leaders was Jewish himself. Ultimately, Ukrainians acted a lot like the Poles - as an ethnic group that was itself targeted for extermination, living in an area overrun by the Nazis - they cooperated with the Nazis to fight the Soviets and fought them when it was expedient. The difference between Ukrainians and the Finns, who also cooperated with the Nazis to fight the Soviets (killing 125K of them during the Winter War) is that the Finns had been independent of Russia for decades and had the resources of a nation state to field an army that prevented the Nazis from dictating policy in Finland. Finland's military commander, Mannerheim, prevented the Nazis from deporting Jews even though Nazis were present in Finland as allies against the Soviets because he had a real army and a real air force. Ukrainian separatists had only what they could scrounge off both the Soviets and the Nazis.

...and Poles.

But it was Russia, via the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, that helped the Nazis kill about 10m Jews and Poles, in addition to millions other Europeans.

It's very true that the Svoboda Party--although a 10% minority in parliament there--is a very serious concern. It should be watched closely. Members appear to be quite anti-semitic. Then there's the other side.

Woah. Pat Buchanan's going to have to change sides!

But seriously, unfortunately anti-Semitism has never gone out of fashion. It's not even disappeared completely from Free Republic (though it's nothing like as bad as it was when I first signed up).

Here's the problem: "Anti-Semitism" should not be treated as generic "racism" or "bigotry." To do so is a form of secularization of both the problem and (and this is the main part) its "solution." This means that the solution to anti-Semitism and "other forms of bigotry" is always to secularize, secularize, and further secularize society, because (so the secularists claim) secular law represents "scientific" realities (even though no scientist has ever found a moral code in a test tube, microscope, or telescope) and "rational laws" that are "fair to all" (which they're not, because all such laws are always aimed exclusively at "the host population").

Who are the Jews? Are they not the objectively Chosen People of the objective One True G-d? Why in the name of all that is reasonable does it take secularism to protect this people? Did they not preside over the only true Theocracy this world has ever seen in Biblical times? Why in the world would anyone insist that Jews can only survive (and only observe the Torah) in a sewer where moral judgments are forbidden? I can think of only one reason: the belief that Torah observance is indeed some sort of (chas vechalilah!) deviancy that has to be protected from the fury of decent people.

Jews don't need Voltaire, the "enlightenment," Thomas Jefferson John Locke, Thomas Paine, or any other European rationalist philosophy to justify and defend the observance the laws of HaQadosh Barukh Hu'. Unfortunately the "official Jewish leadership" is 100% liberal and absolutely devoted to the "enlightenment" as the essence of Yiddishkeit while the Charedi leadership accepts it out of habit and habituation.

European style "far right" ideology is based on the radical localization of "G-d" to a tribal deity tied to "blood and soil." This form of rightism is unknown in America where the most conservative segment of the population grows up on hero tales of Ancient Israel rather than any mythical semi-divine ancestors (well . . . almost, at least). There is no excuse in America for either conservative anti-Semitism or liberal philo-Semitism.

Somewhere a Jewish leadership must arise that will defend the Jewish position not by invoking multiculturalism and tolerance but simply invoking G-d and the Torah. When will this happen? Does it have to wait for Mashiach HaMelekh?

For Torah observance to be classified as something akin to the to`evah of homosexuality in order to "defend" it is a chillul HaShem that cries out to Heaven.

I was at the game when Steve Carlton broke the major league record (later tied by Tom Seaver and others) with 19 strikeouts. He lost the game 4-3, as he gave up two 2-run homers to Ron Swoboda.

So, I am not a fan of Swoboda.
