Univ. of Leicester students: Noah’s Ark would've floated w/ two each of 35,000 species of animal

NOAH’S Ark would have floated — even with two of every animal on board, physicists have determined based on the weight of the beasts and the buoyancy of the boat.

The students from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester who came to this conclusion used the dimensions for the boat that were given in the Bible.

In the book of Genesis, Noah is commanded to build an ark which is 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high to house himself, his family and two of every species of animal.

For the study, the students settled on a cubit being 48.2cm long and found the ark could support the weight of 2.5 million sheep. The university said that previous research suggested there were approximately 35,000 species of animals in Noah’s time.

The students said it was not clear if all the animals would actually be able to fit on board. But if they did, the boat would still float.

Student Thomas Morris, 22, said: “You don’t think of the Bible necessarily as a scientifically accurate source of information, so I guess we were quite surprised when we discovered it would work. We’re not proving that it’s true, but the concept would definitely work.”

The full paper, The animals float two by two, hurrah!, was published in a peer-reviewed student journal.

Research lead Oliver Youle, 22, explained the science behind the study.

“Every object when immersed in a liquid has an upwards force acting against it — a buoyancy force; it also has a weight acting downwards — a downwards force, and in order for it to float, these two forces need to be equal.”(continued)

I wonder how Noah was able to get species like the Polar bear, bison, Kangaroo, Koala, Tasmanian Devil etc on the boat. Or for that matter how did any of those species end up on in North America or especially Australia after the flood?

It floated because GOD caused it to be made by His standards, thus it floated and would never have sunk. Not only did it have to carry the load, but also withstand the storm. It did, thus God made it happen. End of story.

Turns out there is enough underground water deep in the Earth’s crust to cover the world several times over. Recent story on that. Will see if I can find it.

Was also so two of each ‘kind’...which doesn’t necessarily mean 2 of each species...

The ark comes to rest for the last time on the 17th day of the seventh month (Nisan); and mankind is delivered and saved.

That also happens to be the day of the resurrection.

I don’t think that is a coincidence.

(the start of the year was shifted around a bit after Israel returned from the exile, so the numbering of the months changed, but the above is correct.)

How interesting that such a story, written thousands of years ago, could contain specific design instructions that, when followed, would create a sea worthy ship that would indeed hold what the ‘story’ says it would hold. Amazing someone could just pull that one out of their butt. ;)

the evidence is there was a flood

So 1.2 million species currently known and 35,000 in Noah’s time means a whole lot of evolution has occurred.

Wasn’t it Mark Twain who pointed out there had to be all kinds of bacteria and germs on board.

According to scripture the ark was 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high.

A conservative calculation for the cubit is around 17.5 inches while some scholars believe it to be closer to 56 centimeters or 22 inches.

This puts the arks size at around 437 feet long, 72 feet wide by 43 feet high.

(A length to width proportion of 6 to 1 which is still used by naval architects)

There were two floors which gave added support and three decks equaling around 96,000 square feet.

Now for the amount of capacity.

Besides Noah, his wife, his three sons and their wives, living creatures, of every sort of flesh, two of each ‘kind’ were to be brought on board.
(male and female)
Of the ‘clean’ beasts and fowls, seven of each were to be brought aboard.

It has been estimated by some that the hundreds of thousands of species of animals today could be reduced to a comparatively few family ‘kinds’- the horse and cow to mention only two.

With this thinking, some scientists have said that had there been 43 ‘kinds’ of mammals, 74 ‘kinds’ of birds and 10 ‘kinds’ of reptiles in the ark, they could have produced the number of species that we have today.

This is only speculation and seems restrictive since sources such as the Encyclopedia Americana indicates that there are upwards of 1,300,000 species of animals.

However, over 60 percent of these are insects.

Breaking the figures down further, of the 24,000 amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, 10,000 are birds, 9,000 are reptiles and amphibians, many of which could have survived outside of the ark.

5,000 are mammals, including whales and porpoises which would have also remained outside the ark.

Some scientists estimate that there are only about 290 species of land animals larger than sheep and about 1,360 smaller than rats.

If you wish to do the mathematics you can see where the ark was large enough to handle the amount of ‘species’ that would carry on to today.

(I have a headache in just researching the scriptures and getting this overly long post ready for posting)

I know, some will say what about the dinosaurs but since that isn’t mentioned in scripture .. my guess is that they didn’t live during the time of Noah.

These are just my thoughts, simple as they may be and not all encompassing for sure.

Other Christians can probably add more than what I have said here because .. there is so much more!

I apologize if I have upset any of my friends on the forum.

(any spelling errors are strictly mine) 8(

Who had to clean all those animals?
One 18” window: How many gallons of Glade air spray did they use?
Whose idea was it allow ticks, mosquitos and Democrats?
And if the water covered everything—even Mt. Everest—that’s a lot of H2O. Where did it all go?
Enquiring minds want to know ....

Wasn’t there some article about huge “clouds” (well, denser than clouds) of water floating through space, possible that one of these “clouds” “washed” over the earth and placed all the water?

And many thousands of fishermen, too, right? They had boats and could navigate the seas.

Also, exactly how old was Noah when he built this ark? I went to a play that claimed he was many hundreds of years old. Is that literal?
