Trump’s Ceiling of Support May Be Limited
The New York Times ^ | 2/11/16 | Sean Trende

Posted on 02/13/2016 12:50:30 PM PST by TBBT

Few professional analysts seriously expected six months ago that Donald Trump could win the Republican nomination. But after Tuesday night, it is a clear possibility.

How much of a possibility? To get that answer right, it is important to understand some things about the Trump phenomenon.

Perhaps most important, Trump's campaign is not a Tea Party phenomenon. While there's been a tendency to try to lump Trump in with various G.O.P. insurgencies of the last few years, that role is best filled by Sen. Ted Cruz, who really occupies the "Tea Party lane" of the G.O.P. primary more cleanly.

Instead, Trump is a part of a much older insurgency within the G.O.P., dating back to the 1992 Pat Buchanan campaign and even to some internal debates within the Nixon administration. Candidates in this vein, such as Gov. Mike Huckabee and Sen. Rick Santorum, have argued from varying angles that the economic libertarianism of the G.O.P. is a tough sell, and should be pulled more toward an economic populism that allows for increased redistribution and for helping the "little guy" who has been left behind in the era of globalization. It is because of this confusion that so many of the early attacks on Trump - from questioning his conservative bona fides to making fun of the way he talked - fell flat. Trump's voters simply didn't care about these things.

I live in Texas. There will be enough ranchers happy to build a wall. They’re tired of having to defend their property against the illegals. They have trespassers coming thru every day, some even come into their homes and steal and threaten them.

The wall is going to be one of the easiest things to take care of.

Big crowds don’t make you a bad leader, either.

I guess the New York Times is showing no bias in this race, huh? If there are two people who have limited ceilings of support it’s those two socialists Comrade Bernie and Shrillary.

But I wish he would not sink even a little to their level. It is customary and easy to use a euphemism... I always say dang instead of the other word.

I truly admire your "Aunt Dee-ism;" really.

But in my view there are seriously more important issues that need adult attention at this time.

I appreciate your nice response, and admit mine wasn’t so nice.

Honestly, after eight months of this, I’m a little gun-shy when folks express the idea we don’t have any questions.

Of course we do. I have them every time I support someone. Will they follow through? Does this conform to their past?

Trump is different than any other person I have voted for. He wasn’t a politician nine months ago.

How do I judge him. One way to do it is to evaluate his past comments and actions. And with Trump those are very colorful, not complimentary by a Conservative’s standards, to say the least.

Was he an established politician doing those things? No. Was he lying to his constituents when he did those things? No. Had he established a public policy on the record that others would evaluate and stand behind? No.

He was a businessman and public figure that had snap opinions and he expressed them. He ever included those opinions in books, so it’s not entirely fair to say he never sat down and gave consideration to these issues. He did. Then he decided to run for president and for the first time he had to sit down and look at the issues and determine what ideology he wanted to support. He had to come up with a core that everything would tie back to. Can’t stand for this on this issue, if I’m going to take that for the other issue. Things had to mesh.

As a businessman, I don’t think he views obtrusive government to the path to a good deal. On issue after issue, it seems Trump has moved right over time.

I’m glad of that. He didn’t do it in a few weeks. We can look at abortion, gun rights, health care, over time he moved right.

I trust him as much as I trust any politician. If he does 25% of what he says he wants to, I’ll be 25% farther ahead than I was under Bush.

Bush was a big fat waste of time. Eight years and the man left so much on the table, it collapsed.

We need a CEO type to get things under control, and that spells Trump to me.

As for character, I have my good days and my bad days.

We all do.

Once again, thanks for the nice note.

“But the GOPe is not Trump’s enemy. They much prefer him to Ted Cruz.
Oh yeah.
I’ve noticed.”

I agree with your sarc.

Haven’t seen the articles about the GOP huddling together to figure out how to get rid of Cruz. Seen a few on how the GOPeers huddle together to try to figure out how to get rid of Trump.

I’m guessing trumps support will jump up again if any of the following happens:

Terrorist attack by Muslims (but I repeat myself) - here or abroad

Financial crisis

Immigrant invasion increases

Probably others too.

I think one or more will happen.
I think trump is well positioned to benefit the most.

IF Cruz were nominated SNL and every other comedy show would have a Treasure Trove of insanity to work with. They would decimate Cruz’s lunatic Fringe Daddy, and Teddy’s ‘Seventh King” lunacy.

I believe any American citizen has grounds to do so, why don”t you?

Since it appears that you are a rabid Cruz supporter wouldn’t you want to make absolutely sure your vote will count? Isn’t that the scam Cruz pulled on Dr. Carson in Iowa? seems he urged voters to be sure their vote counted.

I disagree. TBBT is a good person. Liking someone besides The Don does not make him a bad person.

Wrong. If you don't back my candidate you are the AntiChrist.
